นักวิจัยที่ KFSH&RC & KAUST Discover Gene ซึ่งรับผิดชอบเรื่องการขยายพันธุ์ของสายพันธุ์เชื้อมาลาเรียที่อันตรายที่สุด

กรุงริยาด, ซาอุดีอาระเบีย, Feb. 07, 2024 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — ในความก้าวหน้าทางวิทยาศาสตร์ครั้งใหญ่ ทีมวิจัยจาก King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre (KFSH&RC) ร่วมกับ King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) โดยทำงานร่วมกับนักวิจัยจากสหราชอาณาจักร สหรัฐอเมริกา และอินเดีย ได้ค้นพบยีนสำคัญที่ใช้เป็นเครื่องมือในการต่อสู้กับโรคมาลาเรีย ยีนนี้มีชื่อว่า PfAP2-MRP มีความสำคัญในกระบวนการจำลองแบบของพลาสโมเดียม ฟัลซิพารัม ซึ่งเป็นปรสิตที่ทำให้เกิดสายพันธุ์มาลาเรียที่ร้ายแรงที่สุด เทคนิคในห้องปฏิบัติการขั้นสูงช่วยให้นักวิจัยสามารถยับยั้งยีน PfAP2-MRP ได้ ซึ่งเผยให้เห็นบทบาทที่สำคัญในวงจรชีวิตของปรสิตเชื้อมาลาเรียภายในเซลล์เม็ดเลือดแดง การยับยั้งนี้ขัดขวางความสามารถในการสืบพันธุ์ของปรสิตได้อย่างมีนัยสำคัญ ลดความรุนแรงของอาการของโรค และลดการแพร่กระจายได้ การค้นพบนี้ส่งผลกระทบอย่างยิ่ง เมื่อกล่าวถึงมาลาเรียชนิดพลาสโมเดียม ฟัลซิพารัม ซึ่งคร่าชีวิตผู้คนไปแล้วมากกว่าครึ่งล้านคนต่อปี ดร.
