90 pct of public complaints have been resolved as of last month – Melaka CM

MELAKA, Aug 11 (Bernama) — The Melaka state government managed to resolve a total of 90.19 per cent out of 5,627 complaints and issues faced by the people from Jan 1 to July 31 this year.

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Sulaiman Md Ali said 9.81 per cent or 502 complaints are still being dealt with as the relevant agencies require more time to resolve the issues.

He said the complaints are related to various issues involving land, welfare, assistance and amenities in housing estates, among others.

“Today’s Meet the Clients Day platform allows the public to communicate and interact face-to-face with the Chief Minister’s Department complaint coordinator,” he told reporters in Jasin here today.

Earlier, he officiated the Melaka State Government Meet the Clients Day and the state-level Organ Donation Awareness Week which was also attended by the Melaka State Secretary Datuk Zaidi Johari.

The programme involved 12 state departments and agencies including the Melaka Chief Minister’s Department Corporate Communication Division, Jasin District and Land Office, and Jasin Municipal Council.

Elaborating, Sulaiman said the programme aimed at increasing the capacity, efficiency and effectiveness of complaint management and improving the approach to obtaining and understanding the issues faced by the people, among others.

Meanwhile, Sulaiman said public awareness regarding organ donation is still low, with less than one per cent pledged to be organ donors, adding that he hoped more people will pledge.

He also said that he hoped more people will agree with the wishes of their family members to donate their organs to allow more patients to get a new lease of life.

“In conjunction with the Organ Donation Awareness Week from Aug 11 to 17, the state government and the state Health Department would like to express our appreciation and thanks to relatives of donors who have decided to donate their organs,” he added.

Make Semporna a clean city to attract foreign visitors – Masidi

SEMPORNA, Aug 11 (Bernama) — Sabah Local Government and Housing Minister Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun has called on all quarters to work together to make Semporna a clean city and attract more tourists from all over the world.

He said although Semporna is known for its beautiful islands and unique marine treasures, failure to maintain cleanliness will affect its ability to remain a tourist attraction in the state.

He added that the people of Semporna and Sabah would get to enjoy various benefits, especially in terms of socioeconomic growth if the tourism sector can be developed.

“It is not impossible to make Semporna one of the cleanest cities in the world if all parties work together to maintain cleanliness, whether on land or at sea.

“If we love this district, we have to change our attitude and strive to make Semporna the cleanest city in the world,” he said in his speech when launching the Garbage Collection Service Project in Semporna waters here today.

Masidi said in addition to garbage collection, efforts such as planting flowers on the side of the road and introducing more awareness programmes could inculcate a habit of cleanliness among residents in the district.

In a press conference after the ceremony, he said the garbage collection project would be more effective with the involvement of the people, including the Pala’u community in the area.

Meanwhile, a representative of Amwil Deslen Management and Supplies, Lionor Malik, said the company started the garbage collection service in November last year.

“We use nine boats for this project and every day, more than one metric tonne of garbage can be collected. We also provide garbage traps in tourism focal points including tourism jetties,” she said, adding that the operation started from 8 am to 4 pm.

According to Lionor, the company also purchases recyclable waste from local residents at 20 sen per kilogramme and the public can send the items to the collection centre in Kampung Sri Aman, Simunul here.

10 to 20 per cent rent reduction for government premises starting September

SERDANG, Aug 11 (Bernama) — Ministries and government agencies which are renting out their premises to hawkers and petty traders have been instructed to reduce the rents by 10 to 20 per cent starting next month.

Chairman of the Special Task Force on Jihad Against Inflation Tan Sri Annuar Musa said the matter was proposed in the task force’s last meeting and was agreed upon by the Cabinet in its meeting yesterday.

Annuar, who is also Minister of Communications and Multimedia said it also followed the Higher Education Ministry’s initiative in giving a six-month rent exemption to food stall operators and service providers on all public university campuses, which enabled them to offer meals for as low as RM3.50.

“It was proven doable.

“So, we will expand the policy to have government agencies like the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) Majlis Amanah Rakyat (MARA), as well as ministries, which are renting out their premises to petty traders to reduce the rents by at least 10 to 20 per cent,” he told a press conference after chairing the task force’s meeting today.

Annuar said the efforts to reduce rents and to organise sale or price reduction programmes for certain items including chicken, eggs and cooking oil, were hoped to boost public confidence in helping the government to curb inflation and price hikes in the country, in line with this year’s National Day theme, “Keluarga Malaysia, Standing Strong Together”.

“As a big Malaysian Family, we have to try to reduce prices so that the country will not get stuck in the cycle of price hikes to the extent of raising the price based on sentiments rather than the costs involved,” he said.

For example, he said when the prices of chicken and cooking oil were reduced and the electricity tariffs were not increased, the production costs for certain items, including cooked food, could actually be retained or even reduced, with cooperation from the traders.
