SIRIM QAS International launches Fire Resistance Furnace

SIRIM QAS International today launched a new testing facility, Rectangular Type Fire Resistance Furnace, that will benefit fire safety authorities, fire door manufacturers and others involved in the construction industry.

The new fire safety laboratory, the first of its kind in Southeast Asia, is capable of conducting fire resistance tests on building materials such as ducts, ceilings and steel structures, adding to its existing comprehensive range of services.

SIRIM Group Berhad President and chief executive officer Datuk Indera Dr Ahmad Sabirin Arshad said the use of the laboratory by related industries in the region and the world is expected to have a positive impact on the country’s economic growth.

“Today’s launching is another achievement by SIRIM QAS International, a wholly-owned subsidiary of SIRIM Berhad, a pioneering organisation that is recognised by the Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) and other regional authorities,” he said in the statement.

The laboratory at SIRIM Rasa’s Selangor branch was inaugurated today by the Ministry of International Trade and Industry deputy secretary-general Datuk Seri Norazman Ayob.

According to Ahmad Sabirin, as a pioneer organisation recognised by other regional agencies such as the Singapore Civil Defence Force, SIRIM QAS International will continue to actively work to assist the agencies with available capabilities.

“Malaysia has the opportunity to be a leader in laboratory testing and certification in the region through SIRIM’s support in meeting norms and quality standards since 1966,” he said.

“I am confident that by setting a clear goal in the near future, we will be known and recognised as a centre for fire testing in the region,” he said.
