Parliament News in brief- Sept 23

KUALA LUMPUR — The Kedah Rubber City (KRC) project is expected to begin operations in early 2023, according to Rural Development Minister Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid.

He said the process of preparing the KRC site under the Northern Corridor Economic Region (NCER) and the Kedah state government was now underway, including upgrading the water supply plant and preparation of electricity supply.

“This will enable the site to be used to build factories for downstream products in the rubber industry,” he said during the winding-up session on the motion of thanks on the royal address at the Dewan Rakyat sitting here today.

He was responding to Ahmad Tarmizi Sulaiman (PAS-Sik) who questioned whether the Rural Development Ministry will expedite preparations for KRC to help rubber tappers in the downstream segment of the industry.

SANDAKAN MP URGES GOVT TO REVIEW SYSTEM FOR ELDERLY WITHOUT SMARTPHONES

KUALA LUMPUR — Sandakan MP Vivian Wong urged the government today to consider an alternative system for the elderly and those without smartphones to use for COVID-19 status updates and premise check-ins instead of relying solely on the MySejahtera app.

Vivian said most elderly people and even the underprivileged might not have smartphones and many of them are registering their vaccination status using the dependent function under the MySejahtera App.

This has resulted in an inconvenience for the senior citizens when they tried to enter certain premises when they are not accompanied by their dependents.

“Many of them registered for their vaccinations using the dependent function of their family member’s MySejahtera accounts. An alternative system could be in a form of a key chain like a digital token that can be carried in the pocket and enable one to scan or check-in before entering any shops, a simple tracking system for our senior citizens,” she said in a press conference at the Parliament, here today.
