MAM to organise inaugural Merdeka Virtual Race

The e-racing community will have a chance to put their skills to the test by participating in the inaugural MAM (Motorsports Association of Malaysia) Merdeka Virtual Race in conjunction with the upcoming 64th National Day celebrations.

MAM president Tan Sri Mokhzani Tun Mahathir said the event held in collaboration with MSF, RaceRoom and Adrenaline Impact, begins with the preliminaries and qualifying round from Aug 3-29.

Following the success of the first Lockdown Virtual Championships, which drew 210 participants last year, Mokhzani said MAM expects the inaugural Merdeka Virtual Race to attract even more participants this year.

“Participants can race on three different e-racing platforms, namely iRacing, Gran Turismo Sport, and RaceRoom,” he said.

The final race on the iRacing platform will be held on Aug 30 , while the finals for Gran Turismo Sport and RaceRoom events will be held on the 31st.

Apart from the e-racing events, racers will also have the opportunity to further enhance their e-racing skills through the Virtual Racer Clinic, which will be held on Aug 14. The three-hour virtual class will be conducted by Split Second Advanced Driving (SSAD) instructor Rashid Ramlan.

“Despite the limitations and restrictions due to the COVID-19 situation, we explored a different avenue to ensure the spirit of motorsports continues even if it means using a virtual platform to race. This also fits perfectly into the increased interest and participation in the booming e-sports scene,” said Mokhzani.

MAM has also struck a partnership with leading insurance and takaful provider Etiqa as the Platinum sponsor for the event, while premium lubricants maker Hi-Rev is the Gold sponsor.

Group CEO of Etiqa Insurance & Takaful, Kamaludin Ahmad said the virtual race resonates with Etiqa’s organisational culture of making things Fast & Easy, whether it is to purchase, submit claims or receive payouts, and that they look forward to cheering the racers on.

In the meantime, General Manager of POSIM Petroleum Marketing Sdn Bhd. Valerie Poon, believed that with HI-REV Lubricants, MAM and Etiqa, three national winning brands joining forces, they can bring the fun experience in motorsport to a new level.
