Flood: Agriculture Depts told to be proactive in collection information

ALOR GAJAH, Nov 14 (Bernama) — Agriculture departments in flood-hit states are urged to be more proactive in collecting information on damage and losses suffered by farmers and breeders so that aid can be channelled immediately.

Deputy Agriculture and Food Industries (MAFI) Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Hamzah, said this includes monitoring and identifying agricultural areas at risk of flooding and other disasters during the monsoon season.

“We have activated the MAFI Operations Room nationwide to help flood victims, especially the affected farmers, breeders and fishermen.

“Those affected, for example in Kedah, Perak, Selangor, Johor and Melaka, are urged to contact their agriculture authorities immediately so that follow-up action can be taken,” he told reporters after attending the Melaka State Farmers’ Organisation Authority (LPP)’s “Semarak Kasih Peladang” programme today.

On a separate matter, Ahmad urged all LPP members who have yet to join the Farmers’ Family Smart Card Initiative (PELADANG-i) to do so immediately to reap the benefits of the scheme.

He said it was important to ensure that this group received the RM5,000 takaful protection for farmers through a collaboration with Bank Agro.

“So far,  the initiative has been very well received as there are many privileges, including insurance coverage,” he added.
