‘In keeping with the command of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, following the consent of the Rulers, I hereby declare that the date for Hari Raya Puasa for the states in Malaysia has been set for Wednesday, April 10, 2024,’ he said.

The announcement was broadcast over local television networks.

He said the criteria refer to the condition where the new moon is considered visible if it is at a position not less than 3 degrees and 6.4 degrees above the horizon when the sun sets.

Mohd Na’im said this following the announcement of the date of Aid

According to him, Saudi Arabia conducted the moon sighting on Monday evening, April 8, (a day earlier than Malaysia) as 1 Ramadan in that country is earlier than in Malaysia.

ICONIC SNACKS EVOKE VINTAGE VIBES, NOSTALGIC CHILDHOOD MEMORIES

KUALA LUMPUR, Looking at various iconic snacks like iced gem, choco bear, and airplane-shaped treats popular in the 80s and 90s certainly evokes vintage vibes, and nostalgic memories of childhood.

Snacks nestled in boxes alongside toys, sour candies shaped like coins, and an array of timeless treats seem to withstand the test of time, remaining vivid and unforgettable in our memories.

Despite the passage of time and the emergence of numerous food innovations, classic snacks endure with their unchanged packaging and familiar illustrations, continuing to be sought after and cherished across generations.

For these reasons photographer Amirul Azril Ahmad Azmai, 29, chose these iconic snacks as props for his wedding ceremony at home, adding an extra layer of nostalgia to the vintage theme he selected.

‘I created a small kiosk resembling a grocery store displaying biscuits in tins, candies, and chips hanging in large plastic bags, especially for our young guests,’ he explained.

‘This kiosk evokes fond memories
of snacks and candies I enjoyed as a child. I also used other props such as banners with Jawi script and vintage vehicles,’ he told Bernama.

The nostalgic ambience evoked by these timeless snacks has become a popular choice among event organisers for various occasions, including birthdays and open houses, where kiosks are often reserved to offer such snacks to delight guests.

Fatein Azrin, 32, who owns a business called ‘Kunyahan’ providing such kiosks for the past five years, emphasised that offering these snacks creates a cozy atmosphere and puts guests at ease.

She highlighted that the company provides a range of ‘old school’ snacks, including high-quality iced gems, adding that she personally believes that these items evoke nostalgic memories for people of all ages.

‘My business is rooted in childhood memories. It takes me back to the cherished moments when I would ask my grandfather for bottled soda with ice, which used to cost only RM0.20, in a plastic packet tied at the side,’ she reminisced.

Thes
e timeless snacks have also proven to be a boon for online entrepreneur Hasana Zaini, 34, facilitating the growth of her business and leading to the establishment of a physical store two years ago.

‘Responding to the consistent feedback and requests from customers longing for the nostalgic ambience of the past, complete with physical displays of these snacks, I made the decision to open a brick-and-mortar store.

‘Although they could easily order them online, many prefer to come to the store because they enjoy choosing and weighing the snacks, just like in the old days,’ she said.

Nabilla Fadzillah, a fervent biscuit enthusiast, highlighted that she willingly spends tens of dollars daily to ensure she has a constant stock of her favourite biscuits.

The 35-year-old civil servant elaborated that her passion for these biscuits spans generations, from her grandmother’s era to her nieces and nephews, who also relish these treats.

Consequently, she describes them as one of the most effective means of bridging t
he generation gap within the family.

‘I’ve been eating these classic snacks since I was a child because my parents bought them for me. Now, I buy them for my nieces and nephews,’ she said.

PENANG LRT: MOBILITY, TOURISM BOOST, NO THREAT TO FERRY SERVICE

GEORGE TOWN, The implementation of the Penang Mutiara Route Light Rail Transit (LRT) project is seen as a beneficial alternative transportation option for residents to alleviate traffic congestion and enhance urban mobility by connecting urban and suburban areas.

The LRT line, expected to run from Silicon Island to Komtar, then crossing to Penang Sentral in Seberang Perai, is also poised to boost tourism in the state, which is rich with UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Sites.

Transportation analyst and expert Abi Sofian Abdul Hamid said that the LRT network connects strategic locations, fulfilling users’ demands with efficient and accessible transportation hubs at each station.

“Therefore, support networks for ‘the last mile’ and related aspects need to be taken into consideration. This includes shuttle transportation and parking facilities.”

“If we look at the Prime Minister’s announcement (Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim), this project will also involve transit-oriented development concepts where LRT stations will be
focal points for residential and job centre development,” he said recently.

Abi Sofian, who is also the Founder of Thought Partners Group Consulting (TPG), explained that the project could contribute to green mobility by reducing vehicles and carbon emissions in line with the National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR) if executed based on thorough research findings and proper implementation.

In theory, he said, with stations located at tourist attractions, it can attract tourists to move easily from one attraction to another, including Penang Sentral Station, which offers seamless transportation connectivity.

Commenting on the federal government’s decision to officially take over the LRT project from the state government, Abi Sofian said it would ensure various project management aspects are better handled, considering the involvement of MRT Corp with their experience in delivering rapid transportation in the Klang Valley.

Meanwhile, Tourism and Transport Business Consultant YS Chan noted that apart from b
enefitting commuters, industrial tourism will certainly get a boost as Penang is a showcase for the successful manufacturing of high-tech products not only in Malaysia but also globally.

“Visitors will no longer have to brave congested traffic as travelling by LRT will be a breeze and they will be impressed to witness a large number of locals enjoying the facility. However, the entire LRT route must be carefully thought out and the location of stations strategically planned,” he said.

Asked whether the construction of the LRT will affect the operations of the ferry service, Chan, who is an Asean Tourism Master Trainer, believes it is not an issue as the ferry service is just complementary to road and rail services.

Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow described the LRT project as providing various socio-economic development benefits to the residents of the Pearl of the Orient in the long term.

While the LRT project may not solve 100 percent of traffic congestion problems, he is confident that it is a state
government effort to assist people facing pressing traffic congestion issues.

The LRT project, estimated to span about 29 kilometers with 20 stations including two interchange stations at Komtar Station and Penang Sentral Station, is expected to commence in September or October this year.

Facilities for Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB) commuter trains and electric trains (ETS) will also be provided on the Pearl LRT line, targeted to operate by 2030.

Last week, the federal government officially took over the Penang Pearl LRT Route project from the state government, following the Cabinet’s decision to approve the development proposal for the project on March 22.
