SHAH ALAM, March 1 — Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari tested positive for COVID-19 following an RT-PCR test today.

Selangor Menteri Besar press secretariate in a statement today informed that Amirudin would undergo self-quarantine for seven days following health protocols prescribed by the Ministry of Health and would return to work on March 8.

The statement said Amirudin apologised for the inconvenience that arose following this development and requested that anyone who was in contact with him within the last 48 hours to undergo screenings for COVID-19.

“Let us pray for the health of his family and all those who are also affected by the COVID-19 infection. May Allah continue to bless and protect us all,” read the statement.

SIBU, March 1 — A family of three died in a fire which razed two houses in Kampung Bahagia Jaya here tonight.

Preliminary information from the operations centre (PGO) of the Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (JPBM) stated that the victims were identified as Sima Abdullah, 18, Rashidah Suut, 81, and another yet-to-be identified victim.

Meanwhile, Sibu Zone 4 fire chief Janggan Mulling said four more victims survived the fire which was reported at about 8.12pm.

A total of 19 personnel from two fire and rescue stations here rushed to the scene before putting the blaze under control at about 9.00 pm.

So far, JBPM is still investigating the cause of the fire.

KUALA LUMPUR, March 1 — Telecommunication companies have been urged to cooperate with the government in ensuring the quality of the Internet in the country is always at the best level.

Communications and Multimedia Minister Tan Sri Annuar Musa said the government had provided the infrastructure for the companies to provide the best services and they should not pursue profit without regard for quality.

“Everyone has to work together, don’t just think of profits. The government has set up the infrastructure and so on. I like to see companies make a profit because when they do, the government will also get (revenue) from taxes.

“But they also need to invest back and provide the best service to consumers. The ecosystem is large and everyone has to play a role,” he said in the programme ‘Responsif’ entitled ‘Slow Internet’ over RTM, tonight.

The other two guests were the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) chief operating officer Datuk Mohd Ali Hanafiah Mohd Yunus and artiste Mohd Ashraf Muslim.

Annuar also said telecommunication companies, MCMC and the relevant parties need to constantly communicate with consumers to understand their problems related to the Internet.

“Consumer dissatisfaction should not be overlooked. In the pursuit of profit and given the marketing strategy and various campaigns, what is given to consumers is not as promised,” he said.

On Feb 25, Annuar said the Ministry of Communications and Multimedia (KKMM) had instructed MCMC to conduct random monitoring of telecommunication companies to ensure the quality of the communication service experience remained at its best.

He said this was done so that initiatives to encourage the public to use digital platforms and the latest technology are not hampered.

He added that performance audits need to run continuously and MCMC needs to communicate with all telecommunications companies to make improvements to achieve the stipulated speed.

KUALA LUMPUR, March 1 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob has extended his condolences to Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and his family on the passing of his brother Rusli Ibrahim.

Ismail Sabri conveyed his condolences through a post on Twitter, tonight.

“Condolences to Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and his family on the passing of his younger brother, Tuan Haji Rusli Ibrahim. May the soul of the deceased be blessed and placed with the souls of those who believe and do good deeds. Al-Fatihah,” he said.

He is the fifth child of nine siblings.

Earlier via Twitter, Anwar, who is also the Member of Parliament for Port Dickson, informed that his brother died at the age of 74 at Selayang Hospital, today.

It is understood that the late Rusli died due to old age at about 2.20 pm after being at Selayang Hospital for the past few weeks and the body will be taken to the Al-Ubudiah Mosque before being buried in the cemetery around Ampang, tonight.
