Baling floods: NAFAS channels aid to over 600 farmers

BALING, July 19 (Bernama) — The National Farmers Organisation (NAFAS) has allocated over RM120,000 to help more than 600 farmers, affected by the floods and water surge phenomenon that hit the district on July 4.

Its board of directors’ chairman, Datuk Zamri Yaakob, said that members of the Baling Area Farmers Organisation (PPK) would receive RM200 in cash each.

“Today we presented our contribution of RM200 each to some 150 farmers. We will present similar aid to the remaining recipients in another event like this, perhaps next week,” he told reporters after presenting donations to farmers affected by the floods at PPK Baling here today.

Zamri said that the assistance was provided through disaster allocation under the NAFAS Fund.

He said that a total of RM2.161 million was allocated by NAFAS to help farmers affected by the disaster nationwide this year, and thus far, a total of RM1.048 million has been channelled to those affected.

He hoped that the assistance would ease the burden borne by farmers in facing the disaster, when they had to bear losses not only due to the destruction of crops or livestock, but also damaged property.

He added that NAFAS was always concerned with the situation of its members who needed assistance, especially in terms of injecting financial assistance and empowering farmers’ organisations to move forward.

In the recent floods, a total of 41 areas were affected, with 17 houses badly damaged and no longer inhabitable, apart from claiming three lives, including a 23-year-old pregnant woman.
