Area Fishermen’s Association told to increase membership

BELURAN, July 6 (Bernama) — The Area Fishermen’s Association (PNK) has been urged to increase membership so that the government can deliver assistance in an organised manner to the target group.

Agriculture and Food Industries Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ronald Kiandee said the government wanted to ensure that the socio-economic level of small-scale fishermen could be upgraded to further ensure the continuity of the country’s fish supply.

He said it was the PNK’s responsibility to ensure that all fishermen are protected by the government through the association.

“The fisheries sector is one of the important sectors that could ensure the continuity of food security supply. Thus various programmes have been prepared by the government through MAFI (Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industries) to grow the country’s fisheries sector,” he told reporters after officiating Beluran PNK’s new office building here today.

Ronald said the agenda to improve the socio-economic level of the country’s fishermen could be achieved through PNK’s continuous commitment.

On the new office building, Ronald said he hoped that the Beluran PNK would maximise its use by hosting socioeconomic development activities for the community, especially among its members.
