Afghan orphans long for familial love

KABUL (Afghanistan), Nov 17 — The arrival of the Muslim Care Malaysia team on a humanitarian aid mission to Afghanistan at an orphanage here was warmly welcomed by 15 orphans who had lost their parents in a country ravaged by war.

Upon their arrival, the owner of the welfare home introduced all the children to the delegation from Malaysia. Soon, the focus fell on an eight-year-old boy who is said to be talented in composing songs and singing.

Without hesitation, Muhammad Amir Khalil Rahman began singing a song in Pashto dialect. Despite not knowing the meanings of the lyrics of the song, everyone who was present could feel the sadness in the song.

This reporter was told that the poignant song composed by Muhammad Amir was titled ‘I Long For the Embrace of My Mother and Father’.

The lyrics included the line, ‘I don’t have anybody, I miss the love of my mother and father, like other children, I too, need to feel their embraces.”

Muhammad Amir, who was born in the Nangarhar district, had never known the love of his parents, who died after being poisoned.

“My parents died when I was still a child and I only knew about this from a close relative when growing up and placed at this welfare home.

“I have no siblings and have been staying here with 14 other boys, who are orphans like me,” he told Bernama via a translator.

He said he would always pray for the happiness and well-being of his parents and hoped to be reunited with them in heaven.

“I miss them so much. I would be happy if I could just dream about them. That is enough for me because I have never even met them,” he explained, as he cried.

Muhammad Amir and the other orphans whose age ranges from eight to 12 years old are under the care of the Ehsas Welfare and Social Services Organisation here.

This writer was also invited into his room and it was comfortable, with a bed assigned for each orphan. The orphanage also receives monthly monetary contributions from various organisations.

Afghanistan continues to be in turmoil after the Taliban brought down the Mohammad Ashraf Gani-led government last August following the retreat of the United States army from the country after 20 years of occupation.
