Youths resilient, innovative in confronting COVID-19 crisis – Ahmad Faizal

BEIJING, July 21 (Bernama) – Youths all over the world should be applauded for showing their tremendous strength in weathering through the storms of the COVID-19 pandemic, said Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Faizal Azumu.

He said they have proven to be resilient, innovative and resourceful in confronting the unprecedented global crisis.

“They have participated and championed various social causes from distributing food or personal protective equipment to frontliners, assisting the underprivileged groups and addressing climate change.

“These are all the efforts contributing to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals,” he said in his recorded speech at the World Youth Development Forum held in conjunction with International Youth Day 2022, hosted by All-China Youth Federation (ACYF).

The inauguration ceremony was held today in Beijing.

Ahmad Faizal said despite the difficult time, many youths have risen to the occasion and played exemplary roles in the betterment of society, whether as healthcare workers, social and environmental activists, youth volunteers, entrepreneurs or educators.

He also said that the joint effort to organise the forum is a testament to the shared commitment in advancing youth empowerment, by working closely with civil society, think tanks and youth organisations.

The virtual forum is jointly organised by ACYF, in partnership with United Nations Development Program (UNDP), United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), International Labour Organization (ILO) and the World Economic Forum.

Chinese President Xi Jinping also sent a congratulatory letter to the World Youth Development Forum, calling on the youth to promote the Global Development Initiative with concrete actions, and facilitate the implementation of the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

With the theme “For A Shared Future: Promoting Sustainable Development With Youth And For Youth”, the forum is being held from July 21 to 23, with nearly 2,000 youth representatives from over 100 countries around the world attending the conference, where they will discuss global development issues and advocate actions for youth development.

No more living in car for Grace and family – thanks to generous donors

PUCHONG, July 21 (Bernama) — After almost two weeks of making their old car their home, Grace Edward and her family can finally breathe a sigh of relief after receiving a new rented home here on Monday, due to concern and donations from the public.

Grace, 37, a housewife, expressed her gratitude to the public for their help while her husband, Kumar Subramaniam, 37, who lost his mechanic’s job, has also been offered a job in a workshop near their new home.

She said that when they were confronted with difficulties, many came forward to offer assistance and their monetary contributions enabled her to place a deposit for a new rented home as well as repay her debts and purchase basic household needs.

“I didn’t think I would be able to (rent) this house so soon. I am very happy and no longer have the fear of sleeping in the car. A home is important for safety, especially for my son.

“Initially, I thought it might just be normal (sort of) help, but Malaysians are really extraordinary. I am overwhelmed by their support and thank everyone who contributed, I don’t know how to respond,” she told Bernama.

Grace’s plight came to light after she and her family were evicted from their old rented home when they could not pay the monthly rental, resulting in them being forced to sleep in their old Proton Saga Aeroback while awaiting assistance.

Grace, who hails from Puchong, is unable to work as she has to look after her six-year-old son Sriitharan Kumar, and care for her mother who has kidney problems and long COVID symptoms.

Previously, her husband’s employer had to terminate his services as he was unable to work long hours or carry heavy things after a motorcycle accident two years ago.

Grace said that with the extra money that had been raised, she hopes to start a nasi lemak business, distributing it to eateries in Puchong.

“Once I have fully settled into the new house, I will pursue my dream. I will also send my son to school,” she said, adding that she hoped to buy another car to make it easier for her to travel for her business.
