Speaker expresses sadness over MPs’ disrespectful attitude towards Bentara on duty

KUALA LUMPUR, July 19 (Bernama) — Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Azhar Azizan Harun today expressed sadness over the attitude of some Members of Parliament (MPs) who acted disrespectfully towards the Bentara or the serjeants-at-arms during the ruckus in the august hall yesterday.

The commotion which involved several opposition lawmakers, mostly from Sabah, broke out after Azhar rejected the motion by Isnaraissah Munirah Majilis (Warisan-Kota Belud) to have the issues on the Sulu Group’s claims on Sabah be debated, which ended with her being ordered out and suspended from attending the Dewan Rakyat sitting for two days.

Earlier, Datuk Rozman Isli (Warisan-Labuan) asked the Speaker about the suspension status of Isnaraissah, to which the Speaker said it was still in effect as she had clearly ignored Deputy Speaker Datuk Mohd Rashid Hasnon’s instruction to sit down and accept the decision made on the motion.

(Isnaraissah, however, refused to adhere to the instruction which prompted Mohd Rashid to order the Bentara to escort her out.)

“I was really saddened by the incident yesterday. I saw the two young Bentara, who work in Parliament, standing there for 40 minutes, with no one showing respect to them.

“If you don’t respect me, it’s okay. I’m the Speaker, I can take it. That’s my life and my duties, but please show some respect to these young Bentara. They are just doing their job.

“What signal are we giving the people? I’m so sad…the people are not just watching me, they are watching all of us here…I always give ways, I have been accommodating, you want to talk I allow you to talk, but we shouldn’t leave our manners (outside the august house), it’s not good,” he said.

At this point, several MPs from the opposition bloc stood up to interject Azhar’s speech but were told to sit down.

The Speaker went on to take the lawmakers’ attention to the Cokmar Diraja placed on the table of the house.

“The Cokmar Diraja is there in front of us. When we acted disrespectfully yesterday, to whom did we actually show that disrespect? What is the significance of the Cokmar Diraja here?” he said.

Cokmar Diraja is regalia that has been presented by the Malay Rulers which symbolises the power of the Monarch and the authority of Parliament. Its absence will affect the legitimacy of both Houses to convene for sitting.

Azhar also rapped the MPs who frequently referred to the Parliamentary Practice book by Erskine May to allow actions that suit their interests, but when he made a ruling based on the book, it was deemed unacceptable by the MPs.

“Erskine May said that when a ruling was made on Standing Order 18 (2) or similar standing order in the House of Common, the Point of Order is not allowed. Even the Speaker’s decision on the emergency motion was discussed in private, not in the house.

“If we want to talk about Erskine May (‘s book), we talk about it as a whole. Let’s not just pick a paragraph that supports us.

“When I make a ruling, follow the ruling. For an alternative, there’s a procedure. If it should be reviewed, I will bring forth a motion for a review. Let’s not cause such a commotion,” he said.

UiTM Terengganu studying IoT solutions for honey farms

DUNGUN, July 19 (Bernama) – Awareness of the risk of loss faced by stingless bee (Meliponini) farmers due to weather and pests has led the Terengganu branch of Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) to explore ways to use the Internet of things (IoT) to overcome the problems.

Its deputy rector (research and industrial linkages), Assoc Prof Dr Rosman Mahmood, said artificial intelligence and machine learning has helped them collect useful data, especially inside the hive.

“Among the things that can be monitored using IoT are temperature, moisture, air quality, heaviness of the log hive, raindrops, wind speed and the coming and going of bees,” he said, while adding that it is thanks to sensors that can send data to smartphones.

Dr Rosman said research started in 2017 and is a collaborative effort between the faculties of electrical engineering, chemical engineering and hotel and tourism management.

He said the electrical engineering team is responsible for developing a solar power system to generate energy 24 hours a day and store electricity for up to three days.

“It will help ensure effective monitoring and that IoT minimises the losses of farmers,” said Dr Rosman, while adding that they will be sharing their knowledge with farmers soon.

The hotel and tourism management team is researching products like chewy candy and energy bars made from Meliponini honey, while the chemical engineering group is focussed on producing cosmetic and medical products.

“UiTM Terengganu has generated RM80,000 from the sale of honey from 70 log hives in the campus since research started in 2017.

“It is among our initiatives to earn extra income while doing research. There’s a big demand for Meliponini honey because it is natural and good quality,” he said.

Baling floods: NAFAS channels aid to over 600 farmers

BALING, July 19 (Bernama) — The National Farmers Organisation (NAFAS) has allocated over RM120,000 to help more than 600 farmers, affected by the floods and water surge phenomenon that hit the district on July 4.

Its board of directors’ chairman, Datuk Zamri Yaakob, said that members of the Baling Area Farmers Organisation (PPK) would receive RM200 in cash each.

“Today we presented our contribution of RM200 each to some 150 farmers. We will present similar aid to the remaining recipients in another event like this, perhaps next week,” he told reporters after presenting donations to farmers affected by the floods at PPK Baling here today.

Zamri said that the assistance was provided through disaster allocation under the NAFAS Fund.

He said that a total of RM2.161 million was allocated by NAFAS to help farmers affected by the disaster nationwide this year, and thus far, a total of RM1.048 million has been channelled to those affected.

He hoped that the assistance would ease the burden borne by farmers in facing the disaster, when they had to bear losses not only due to the destruction of crops or livestock, but also damaged property.

He added that NAFAS was always concerned with the situation of its members who needed assistance, especially in terms of injecting financial assistance and empowering farmers’ organisations to move forward.

In the recent floods, a total of 41 areas were affected, with 17 houses badly damaged and no longer inhabitable, apart from claiming three lives, including a 23-year-old pregnant woman.
