OKX overtakes global crypto exchanges as 2nd largest, rebrands as cross-platform services provider

Formerly OKEx, OKX’s new brand highlights the platform’s robust suite of crypto, NFT and DeFi investing products

VICTORIA, Seychelles, Jan. 18, 2022 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — OKX, which recently became the second largest cryptocurrency exchange in the world by spot trading volume, today announced a company-wide rebrand that reflects the dynamism and accelerating adoption of cryptocurrency. Founded in 2017 as a cryptocurrency trading service, OKX has since amassed over 20 million users and expanded its suite of digital asset investing products to include OKX Earn, a tool for earning passive crypto income; an NFT marketplace and decentralized application discovery hub; and most recently, MetaX, OKX’s new decentralized mode that features a cross-chain dashboard and self-custody Web 3.0 wallet for storing digital assets, including NFTs.

This shift, as highlighted by the company’s name change from OKEx to OKX, reflects the platform’s growing number of wealth creation opportunities beyond the exchange, which investors use to trade hundreds of digital assets on spot, margin and derivatives markets.

As part of the move, OKX has declared its mission to be “to remove barriers to wealth creation by giving you access to everything our decentralized future holds.” This underscores the platform’s ongoing evolution towards decentralization, which includes giving investors the option to self-custody their digital assets. Distinct from other centralized cryptocurrency exchanges, OKX is committed to gradually decreasing the company’s level of involvement in user activity, with the ultimate goal of shedding intermediation entirely.

“OKX is moving beyond the standard centralized exchange model to give our customers an end-to-end cryptocurrency experience,” said Jay Hao, CEO of OKX. “Most importantly, we’re doing this while upholding the core principles of crypto — decentralization and autonomy. Our goal is to give customers the tools they need to easily and securely earn, transfer, and spend their wealth as they see fit, without intermediation from us. We’ve dropped the ‘E’ from our name because we’re so much more than an exchange, just like crypto is so much more than a speculative asset.”

OKX, which lists over 250 digital assets and has long held the #1 rank for cryptocurrency futures trading volumes, recently became the second largest cryptocurrency spot trading platform in the world. In 2021, total trading volume on the platform, including spot and derivatives instruments, grew over 700%, while the number of trades executed on the platform increased over 480%. Staking, savings and DeFi offerings via OKX Earn saw over $5.1 billion deposited by users, and paid out over $314 million in passive income this past year.

RFID: PLUS doubled up teams to assist customers at toll plazas

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 18 — PLUS Malaysia Berhad (PLUS) has doubled up the teams to assist customers at the toll plazas to ensure a smoother travel experience for the North-South Expressway users who have migrated to the Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology as their toll payment of choice.

PLUS, in a statement today, said it had also improved the visibility of directional signages to increase familiarity of RFID lanes.

“Highway customers who experience detection issues at the RFID lane need not worry as toll personnel will be on hand with a handheld device to scan the RFID tag.

“Should the tag still remain undetectable, a coupon for a full detection diagnostic at the nearest Touch ‘n Go fitment centre will be provided. If the RFID tag still have detection issues after the test, Touch ‘n Go will replace the RFID tag for free,” the statement read.

Meanwhile, it said that PLUS recorded an encouraging migration rate of 10 per cent RFID transactions after its implementation on Jan 15 across the entire North-South Expressway over the weekend.

“PLUS appreciates the feedback and public’s views on the congestion issue that arose at the toll plazas and are making improvements based on these feedbacks.

“PLUS is hopeful with the increased RFID migration, which is in line with today’s contactless payment digital lifestyle and use of e-Wallets, will bring about a smoother and more enjoyable travel experience,” it said.

‘Sir Ladang” shares routine as livestock breeder on TikTok to inspire young people

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 18 –The existence of the social media such as TikTok is not only a platform for the community to showcase talent and creativity, but also to communicate and socialise.

It is through this application that Ridzuan Khalid, 39, a lecturer in hospitality at the Rompin Community College, shares his daily activities, especially after venturing into cattle breeding in Felda Bukit Kepayang, Bera, Pahang since March last year.

His effort not only gained the attention of his students, but also other TikTok users, thus ‘opening the eyes’ of the public, especially the youths, to venture into the unglamorous career.

“Initially, the account was opened to evaluate assignments given to my students for the subject on entrepreneurship, especially on the aspect of their ability to project themselves .

“So, I’m using the same approach by uploading the video of my daily activities on the farm so that they could use it as a reference,” he told Bernama.

He said the response from viewers was “very positive”, especially from the young people and some of them contacted him asking on how to get started and become a llvestock breeder.

“So, what I’m doing is to educate and inspire them to venture into the field of animal husbandry. Don’t be shy. This field has a very bright future with a high and wide market,” said Ridzuan, who has nearly 37,000 followers on ik Tok.

Ridzuan, also known as “Sir Ladang” among his followers on TikTok, chose to venture into livestock farming after realizing the potential of the industry and for side income.

He said it was also to appreciate the sacrifice of his younger brother, Hanafi Khalid, 35, who decided to return to the village to take care of both their parents.

“We started with a capital of RM10,000 , which was used to buy three cows and build the cowshed. After seeing the potential, I decided to invest my savings by buying 12 more cows and plan to have up to 30 cows this year.

“For now we are still in the phase of learning, to know more about breeding cows, but have started accepting orders for the cows be used for this year’s Aidil Adha sacrifice,” he said, adding that he would be at the farm after work daily and on weekends.

Ridzuan said he and his brother had no background or knowledge on livestock farming when they ventured into it, but got help from experienced cattle farm operators in the village, and also sought advice from the Veterinary Services Department (JPV).

“Honestly, this field is very challenging, especially for those of us who have zero knowledge. So, what we do is to find experienced cattle breeders, including watching videos on YouTube to learn how to operate and manage the farm,” he added.

Ridzuan, who is the fifth child of nine siblings, said despite having a stable job as a lecturer, working on the farm gave him a different satisfaction.

“When teaching, the satisfaction is seeing the students succeed, but the pleasure being with nature gives a different kind of satisfaction. It takes away all the stress as a lecturer. It is like a therapy, especially when the cows are more tame and even know me as their masters,” he added.

On his plans, Ridzuan said he hoped to pursue studies at the doctorate level in hospitality and tourism next year.

For the time, it is to further expand this business by becoming a supplier of fresh meat in the next five years, as also to have a vegetable farm, he added.

DVS introduces licencing system for animal-related businesses

Effective Jan 1, four animal-related activities must have a licence from the Department of Veterinary Services (DVS), said its director-general Datuk Dr Norlizan Mohd Noor.

He said the four activities that required licencing were animal boarding, riding and herding, animal shelters and the sale of live animals in cages.

The four activities are among 13 activities involving animals related to management, storage and care, which mandate licencing in line with Section 15 of the Animal Welfare Act 2015, Animal Welfare (Licencing Fees) Regulations 2021, he said.

Four of the 13 activities were enforced in the first phase effective Jan 1, while the rest would be enforced in subsequent phases, he said.

“However, this licencing obligation does not apply to pet owners who keep them at home,” he said in a webinar press conference today.

Elaborating on activities that need to have a licence from DVS, he said this is related to animal accommodation including shelters, animal hotels, spas for animals and pet boarding (premises that carry out animal caring activities).

Horse riding activities such as rounding up of racehorses; activities related to the management, confinement or protection of animals; as well as existing centres or premises keeping animals for sale purposes such as pet shops are among those required to obtain a licence.

Dr Norlizan said DVS provided a grace period of six months for premises owners involved in animal-related activities to obtain their licences.

He said applications for licences must be made online through the website https://awa.dvs.gov.my, with the fee charged being RM100 for a period of one year for each activity and RM50 for a three-year renewal.

He said among the conditions for the application was the preparation of a layout plan at the centre of the premises and ensuring that the five animal needs were met.

These include a suitable environment, a suitable diet, the need for it to be able to exhibit its normal behaviour patterns, to be protected from pain and injury and the right to receive treatment from a specialist or veterinarian.

TTPM receives RM3 million claims under vehicle workshop category for 2020-2021 period

The Tribunal for Consumer Claims Malaysia (TTPM) received 413 claims, worth RM3 million, under the vehicle workshop category for the period 2020 to 2021.

Deputy Minister of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs (KPDNHEP) Datuk Rosol Wahid said of the total amount, more than RM266,000 had been awarded by TTPM.

“If there is a complaint, a problem, report it to us (Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs (KPDNHEP), we will investigate and recommend to the TTPM because this involves consumer rights,” he said during Ruang Bicara programme titled ‘Post-Flood: Know Consumer Rights, Avoid Being Duped ‘ on Bernama TV, tonight.

He said the most important thing was for consumers to keep purchase receipts so that they could be used as proof and facilitate the enforcement authorities to investigate the case.

Meanwhile, Rosol said until today, KPDNHEP had inspected more than 1,000 items including clothes, vehicle spare parts and equipment at more than 300 premises nationwide through Op Cakna conducted since Jan 1, with a focus on states affected by the floods.

Yesterday, Rosol was reported to have said that Op Cakna was to prevent profiteering activities by traders when the demand for certain goods and services increased, after the floods.

According to Rosol, the focus was on electrical appliances, furniture, clothing, vehicle spare parts and vehicle workshops where prices are not controlled by the government.

JPNK denies viral image of logging close to tiger habitat, Gua Musang

The Kelantan Forestry Department (JPNK) has denied the image of traces of forest logging activities recorded by a drone that went viral yesterday, was near the tiger habitat or the Orang Asli village in Pos Bihai, Gua Musang.

JPNK director, Abdul Khalim Abu Samah said the image taken using a drone showed the distance was close but instead it was between five to six kilometres from the location of the recent tiger attack.

“I advise the public not to manipulate the image as the logging location is not close to the tiger habitat or the location of the wild animal attack.

“Checks revealed that the location of the tiger attack, Pos Bihai, is an Orang Asli settlement area outside the Perias Permanent Forest Reserve,” he told reporters after attending the Bukit Bakar Eco-Forest Park opening ceremony officiated by the Kelantan Menteri Besar Datuk Ahmad Yakob, here today.

He said this when asked to comment on media reports regarding allegations by a non-governmental organisation that recorded an image using a drone to detect logging activities in the tiger habitat area located near the Orang Asli village in Pos Bihai, Gua Musang.

Abdul Khalim said most of the Perias Forest Reserve is a production forest and there are several forest plantation development areas along the route to Pos Bihai and has been gazetted as a Protection Forest (Water Catchment Forest) by the state government in 2019.
