Int’l Cultural Expo, Tourism Festival on Silk Road Open in Northwest China

DUNHUANG, China, Sept. 28, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — The 5th China Silk Road (Dunhuang) International Cultural Expo and the 10th Dunhuang Tour-Silk Road International Tourism Festival kicked off on September 24 in Dunhuang, a major hub on the ancient Silk Road in northwest China’s Gansu Province. Both events were organized by the Gansu Provincial People’s Government in partnership with other government agencies.

The three-day Expo and Festival, with “Symphony Silk Road, Cultural Expo for All” as the theme, feature summit conferences, cultural forums, exhibitions and art performances such as “Xuanzang’s Pilgrimage,” a musical drama about the legendary Chinese monk’s journey along the Silk Road in the 7th century.

More than 2,000 years ago, the ancient Silk Road opened up cultural and economic exchanges among countries, which promoted the continuous development of human civilization through opening up and mutual learning, Zhang Xu, vice minister of culture and tourism, said at the opening ceremony.

He added that through holding the events, China hopes to further strengthen both official and non-governmental cooperation on people-to-people exchanges between countries along the Belt and Road, so as to contribute to building a community of shared future.

China’s ancient Silk Road spans a total distance of over 7,000 kilometers (4,350 miles), with Gansu’s section extending over 1,600 kilometers (994 miles). “In recent years, Gansu has seized the opportunity to join in the Belt and Road initiative to promote cultural exchanges and cooperation,” said Yin Hong, secretary of the Gansu Provincial Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC), adding that “These two events build a bridge for cultural integration along the Silk Road and add impetus for the development of countries along the route.”

The Republic of Korea (ROK) serves as the guest of honor this year. Hwang Hee, the ROK’s minister of culture, sports and tourism, said via videolink that the Expo, held in the center of the brilliant Silk Road culture, reminds people of the immeasurable importance of cultural exchanges in human history.

The ROK looks forward to seeing coexistence of all cultures of the world and is willing to further promote the cultural exchanges and cooperation based on cutting-edge digital technology and online platforms, Hwang added.

More than 200 representatives of countries and regions and international organizations, including officials, diplomats and experts, are attending the events virtually or onsite.

Road upgrade at Permatang Keling junction to help reduce congestion, avoid flash floods

NIBONG TEBAL, Sept 28 — The project to upgrade the Federal route from the Permatang Keling junction to the bridge over Sungai Junjung, Simpang Empat here, will help reduce congestion, as well as resolve the flash floods problem in the area, says Senior Works Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof.

He said the project, which was fully completed on Feb 24, not only involved upgrading the roads but also the drainage system in the area.

“The project which started on Dec 5, 2017 was implemented by contractor Seleksi Sensasi Sdn Bhd and the contractor carried it out according to schedule and even managed to complete it two days earlier, which is to expand the two-lane single carriageway route to four lanes.

“The original cost of this project was RM 116.6 million but it was successfully completed at a cost of RM 109,353,204.99, and with savings of RM 7,246,795.01, it is a good sign in the government’s efforts to be prudent in the implementation of national infrastructure projects,” he said during the handing over ceremony of the project here today.

Fadillah said the completion of the project would resolve the issue of traffic congestion due to narrow and dangerous routes in the area, especially during peak hours.

Meanwhile, he said in the current situation which saw the government focusing on tackling the COVID-19 pandemic and national recovery efforts, the role and responsibility of the Public Works Department (PWD) as an executor of infrastructure projects of interest to the people must be continued.

He said through the 12th Malaysia Plan (12MP) launched by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob yesterday, the government’s strategy to prioritise important infrastructure projects could also accelerate economic recovery, for the welfare of the people.

12MP development part of ‘security fencing’ for ESSZone, says ESSCom

LAHAD DATU (Sabah), Sept 28 — Several new control posts and a military camp to be established in the Eastern Sabah Security Zone (ESSZone) under the 12th Malaysia Plan comprise part of the “security fencing” that the Eastern Sabah Security Command (ESSCom) has in mind, it was stated here today.

ESSCom commander Datuk Ahmad Fuad Othman said the ESSZone “fencing” will be able to better check cross-border crime including kidnapping for ransom.

The 12th plan, unveiled in Parliament yesterday, provides for the setting up of the Manalunan and Simanggaris border control posts, a military camp in Felda Sahabat and a General Operations Force camp, he said.

“The Kuala Meruap and Siguntur control posts as well as an Island Forward Operation Base (IFOB) in Tambisan will also be established under the 12MP,” he told Bernama.

Ahmad Fuad said ESSCom had also requested six surveillance aircraft, 15 radar and 20 assault boats but no decision has been made on the matter.

“If these assets are procured, there can be total ‘fencing’ of the ESSZone, including the 70 hotspots prone to cross-border crime. Radar placed at these hotspots can be utilised not only by ESSCom but also other enforcement agencies.

“We are asking for total focus on the ESSZone because ESSCom studies show the continued presence of threats in the ESSZone. We do not want these threats to impose a negative impact on the economy such as loss of tourists and ceasing of barter trader as well as instilling fear in the people,” he said.

He also said that the need for the assets has been presented to Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Hajiji Noor who has welcomed the matter.

Ahmad Fuad also appealed to the people to be “eyes and ears” and channel information on cross-border crime to the security forces for immediate action to be taken.
