MALAYSIA NEEDS 6,000 VETERINARIANS TO MEET INDUSTRY DEMANDS

SERDANG, Malaysia needs at least 6,000 veterinarians to meet the industry demands, including improving animal husbandry methods, compared to the current 2,300 veterinarians.

Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security (KPKM), secretary-general Datuk Lokman Hakim Ali said Malaysia also aims to achieve a ratio of one veterinarian to 5,000 people (who own pets/livestock), compared to one veterinarian to 14,000 people currently.

“We need approximately 6,000 more veterinarians to help us achieve the aspirations of sustainability and food security,” he told reporters after officiating the World Veterinary Day 2024 at the Livestock section of the Malaysia Agro Exposition Park Serdang (MAEPS) here today.

He said the shortage of veterinarians is also contributed by the educational opportunities offered in the country and the capacity of two local universities, namely Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) and Universiti Malaysia Kelantan (UMK), to accommodate the number of applications for veterinary courses, which reach a
round 3,000 applications each year.

However, he said UPM only produces 140 to 150 veterinary graduates, while UMK produces around 40 veterinarians every year.

“Therefore, we need to strengthen cooperation at the ministry level, including the Ministry of Higher Education, local and private universities. We also need to provide incentive packages or the equivalent of medical officers’ benefits that could increase involvement in this industry,” he said.

The World Veterinary Day celebration with the theme ‘Veterinarians Are Essential Health Workers’, organised by the Department of Veterinary Services (DVS) and attended by DVS director-general, Dr Akma Ngah Hamid, provided various activities such as the sale of agricultural equipment products, animal feed, exhibitions of sado (muscular or meaty) cattle, as well as cat examinations and grooming.

Further information can be obtained through the DVS Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/veterinarmalaysia.

PBBM urges Filipinos to uphold Lapulapu’s patriotism

MANILA: President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. on Saturday urged Filipinos to uphold Lapulapu’s legacy of patriotism and rise against modern-day oppressors.

Marcos said the victory of Lapulapu and his men over the Spaniards, led by Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan, in the historic Battle of Mactan on April 27, 1521, showed the Filipino hero’s courage and love for the country and demonstrated how “a force that is rooted in community, courage, and integrity can destroy even the strongest of opponents.”

He said the valor, bravery, and boldness of Lapulapu during the Battle of Mactan, which became the epitome of the ‘indomitable Filipino spirit’ over the years, are worthy of emulation even during modern times.

‘The same is what the nation needs today. Despite being in a world incomparable to that of Lapulapu, we are called to rise against our modern-day oppressors – greed, selfishness, and divisiveness – and uphold the legacy of patriotism that has been passed onto us through the years,’ Marcos said.

‘The im
age of Lapulapu as a living, breathing, and real figure who risked his life to keep his family, comrades, and community safe from hostile outsiders may seem strange to our modern responsibilities. Yet, he remains a symbol of the bravery and honor that each of us inherently possesses.’

He challenged the Filipinos, especially the youth, to continue embracing the ideals of Lapulapu and the wealth of the Philippine heritage as the country shifts to a ‘Bagong Pilipinas.’

‘The challenge now for all, especially the youth, is to continue embracing his (Lapulapu) ideals and the wealth of our heritage as we realize a ‘Bagong Pilipinas’ that is built on the foundations of the liberty and freedom that he and all our other heroes fought hard for,’ Marcos said.

Republic Act 11040 declares April 27 of every year as a “special working public holiday” throughout the country in honor of Cebuano hero Lapulapu, as well as a “special non-working holiday” in Lapu-Lapu City in Cebu province.
