MITA wants clearer SOP ahead of China tourist arrivals

SERDANG, Jan 3 (Bernama) — The Malaysian Inbound Tourism Association (MITA) has urged the government to issue clearer standard operating procedures (SOP) ahead of an influx of tourists arriving from China next Sunday.

Its president Uzaidi Udanis said this was to facilitate preparations by industry players, including airline companies and frontliners.

“We are proposing that the government issue the SOP as soon as possible to enable us enough time to comply with them,” he told the media at the introduction ceremony of MIHARA Aviation here today.

China will reopen its borders on Jan 8 after being closed for almost three years due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but there are concerns about the recent surge in COVID-19 cases in the country.

Meanwhile, Uzaidi said MITA’s collaboration with MIHARA Aviation, which is an airline that provides recreational light aircraft services, will be a new product for travel agents to attract more tourists to enjoy the beauty of the capital from the air.

He said MIHARA Aviation also wants to work with more travel companies to revive the tourism industry through ‘Helicopter Tour’ services around the capital.

“It is very important that we have innovative, new and creative products to attract tourists every year,” he said.

KKDW plans to construct new KEMAS school buildings in flood-prone areas

DUNGUN, Jan 3 (Bernama) — The Ministry of Rural and Regional Development (KKDW) plans to construct new Community Development Department (KEMAS) nursery school buildings which are more appropriate in flood-prone areas.

Its Deputy Minister Datuk Rubiah Wang said among the details to be considered is to construct a multi-storey building with pillars where the upper floors are allocated for classes while the ground floor can be used as a play area or activity centre.

“However, this is still in the planning stage and the ministry is still identifying the flood areas with nursery school facilities because not all of the buildings belong to us,” she told reporters when met at Tabika KEMAS Kuala Jengal, here today.

However, Rubiah said currently KKDW is focusing on repairs of the existing school buildings nationwide that were affected by the floods, since the school session has begun this week.

“So far almost all the affected nursery schools have been cleaned up and the school sessions are in progress.

“During my visit to Tabika KEMAS Kuala Jengal, I found that preparations for the school opening were already made by the management, and it was reported that other areas have done the same,” she said.

Rubiah added that the ministry was still in the process of evaluating the infrastructural damage and losses incurred following the floods.

Recently KEMAS director-general Ahmad Kamal Idris Mohd Nawawi said  212 of its kindergartens in three states were affected when the floods hit on Dec 18.

He said the number included 100 premises in Terengganu, while the rest were in Pahang and Kelantan.

Orang Asli community wants internet access upgraded

GUA MUSANG,  Jan 2  (Bernama) — About 1,500  Orang Asli in Pos Bihai and Pos Balar, here, are seeking the government to upgrade the mobile internet facilities in their area to provide them with better connectivity and communication.

A resident in Pos Bihai,  Mulian Alok, 51, said although the village benefits from the National Digital Network Plan (JENDELA) provided by the government, the access quota is limited and cannot be used by all of the villagers.

He said the residents, mostly from the Temiar tribe,  also requested the government to build a telecommunication substation in the area for better connectivity.

“Currently, we can only make and receive calls through the WhatsApp application. All of us are using the JENDELA Wifi but because of too many people using it, the access is slow and limited,” he said when met by reporters in  Kampung Bihai Lama here today.

For Aport Angkai, 31, the limited Internet access makes it difficult for them to get help during times of emergency, for example when a resident needs immediate medical care or is faced with the threat of attack by wild animals.

Meanwhile, a student of Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Bandar Chiku, Agoramos Angen, 17,  who is sitting for his Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examination this year and stays at the school hostel, said the poor Internet coverage made it difficult for him to connect with his family.

“The internet in the village is very slow,” he said.

Meanwhile, Galas Assemblyman Mohd Syahbuddin Hashim said he took note of residents’ complaints and would bring up the matter to the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC).

“I hope that the problems and issues raised by the residents can be acted upon as soon as possible,” he said.
