Apply fifth principle of Rukun Negara when communicating, Selangor Sultan tells graduates

SERDANG, Nov 26 (Bernama) — The Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah has urged graduates to apply the fifth principle of the Rukun Negara – courtesy and morality when communicating on social media.

His Royal Highness also reminded the graduates not to make excessive comments that are slanderous, libellous, overtly offensive or insulting.

“Because if it happens, it can damage the thinking of the community, especially the young generation,” he said when officiating at Universiti Putra Malaysia’s (UPM) 46th convocation here today.

Sultan Sharafuddin, who is UPM Chancellor, also urged the graduates and prospective alumni to continue the synergy with UPM’s alma mater as a sign of gratitude for the sacrifices made by the university’s staff in realising their success.

“In addition to contributing to the development of UPM students, graduates can also help the university in any form of role and contribution.

“This is in line with the desire to involve alumni in the university’s survival,” he said.

Expressing his confidence in the quality of UPM’s education, Sultan Sharafuddin said he was confident that the graduates had been well guided by lecturers through a transformative academic system.

“Before this, the graduates went through online learning, I believe it does not reduce their quality to become knowledgeable and highly skilled people,” he said.

On UPM’s reputation as a green campus which is one of the main attractions for international students, His Royal Highness said efforts to empower UPM would be intensified through the construction of the largest solar system in a public university.

He said UPM would have a solar photovoltaic (PV) system that can save RM114 million on the university’s electricity bill over a period of 25 years.

Sultan Sharafuddin said UPM needed to focus on 11 aspirations, including producing students who are good citizens, becoming a smart campus and maintaining UPM’s reputation as the most sustainable university.

A total of 6,092 graduates will receive their scrolls at the convocation being held at the Dewan Besar, Pusat Kebudayaan dan Kesenian Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah, UPM here from today until Dec 2.

Of the total, 520 of them will receive their doctorate; 1,508 their Masters; 3,705 their bachelor’s degree and 359 their diplomas.

He said his confidence is based on the fact that, so far this year, Johor has already received 2.8 million international visitors compared to its target of 1.5 million, with some of the main tourist destinations being Desaru, Kota Tinggi and Iskandar Puteri.

“Most of the foreign tourists are from Singapore, India, the Philippines and China. We will continue to attract more tourists and we are working to double the number of tourists next year,” he told reporters when met at the Johor Speed Fest 2022 at R&F Marina here today.

The Sultan of Johor, Sultan Ibrahim Almarhum Sultan Iskandar launched both the Johor Speed Fest and the Johor Yacht and Recreation Club at the R&F Marina. Also present was Johor Tourism director Suhairi Hashim.

Meanwhile, Raven hopes that the Johor and Federal governments will continue to work closely to promote the country’s tourism industry.

“I also hope that attention will be paid to Johor because there are two international gateways in the state, Singapore and Indonesia. We also hope that the Malaysia My Second Home (MM2H) Programme will be reviewed,” he added.

The MM2H programme, introduced in 2002, allows foreigners to buy properties and live in Malaysia for a longer period.

Meanwhile, Suhairi said the three-day Johor Speed Fest, which began yesterday, will highlight R&F as a venue for water and air recreational activities, with exhibitions of high-performance cars and motorbikes, powerboats, jet skis, yachts and seaplanes.

Army builds houses for three Orang Asli in Gombak

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 26 (Bernama) — Three Orang Asli residents of Batu 12, Gombak here received keys to their new houses built by the Malaysian Army (TDM) through the ‘Jiwa Murni (PJM) TDM 2022’ programme.

Chief of Army Gen Tan Sri Zamrose Mohd Zain said the building project, which took three months, was made possible through an allocation of RM99,000 from QSR Brands (M) Holdings Bhd and the Selangor Islamic Religious Council (MAIS).

“Initially, only repairs were to be carried out on the houses of the three recipients after they were selected by the Selangor Orang Asli Development Department. According to Zamrose, apart from the building project for new homes, TDM also carried out house repairs, road and drainage maintenance, repair of houses of worship, schools and maintenance of Muslim cemeteries throughout the country.

Meanwhile, a PJM recipient Amek Pedik, 65, said her application for a new home after all this time has finally been realised.
