Anwar gives NACCOL two weeks to analyse subsidy implications

PUTRAJAYA, Nov 27 (Bernama) — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today ordered the National Action Council on Cost of Living (NACCOL) to analyse and go through the subsidy implications within two weeks.

He said that the subsidies borne by the government including the electricity bill subsidy, are currently being enjoyed by all groups even though they are actually for the poor.

“I have no problem with subsidies for the people, especially those who are in need, but these subsidies should be targeted.

“I have given a period of two weeks to analyse and go through all the implications and discuss with the private sector, investors so that they understand the purpose of the subsidy is to ease the burden of the poor and of course the rich and the industry should not be enjoying it,” he said after chairing the NACCOL Special Meeting at Perdana Putra here.

Anwar said the comprehensive policy related to the subsidies would be reviewed after the formation of the Cabinet.

Also present were chief secretary to the government Tan Sri Mohd Zuki Ali and Bank Negara Malaysia governor Tan Sri Nor Shamsiah Mohd Yunus.

Last Friday, in his first press conference after starting his official duties, Anwar stressed that the issue of the rising cost of living would be given priority by his unity government to alleviate the burden shouldered by the people.

Meanwhile, Anwar said he had asked the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industries through the Federal Agriculture Marketing Authority (FAMA) to take steps to control the cost of food production.

“I also want to thank the industry because it seems to have succeeded in providing enough chicken eggs in the market,” he said.

Confidence vote for PM sensible, resolves legitimacy issue – Amiruddin

BANGI, Nov 27 (Bernama) — Tabling of the motion of confidence for Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim at the Dewan Rakyat session is a sensible move to confirm his legitimacy as Prime Minister.

PKR vice president Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari said the move will also resolve further disputes made by certain parties like what the previous administration faced.

“However, if it (confidence vote) is not tabled, we still need to table the budget and the budget itself can be considered as a confidence vote,” he told reporters today after officiating at the closing ceremony and prize presentation of the MASISWA Networking Games 2022 Championship at Universiti Tenaga Nasional (UNITEN) here.

In his maiden press conference after his swearing-in ceremony as Malaysia’s 10th prime minister last Thursday, Anwar said the first agenda of the 15th Parliament assembly sitting on Dec 19 would  be the tabling of a confidence vote to put questions about his legitimacy as prime minister to rest.

Coordinate efforts to improve children’s well-being, says Wan Azizah

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 27 (Bernama) — Efforts to improve the well-being of children need to be coordinated by all parties, starting with the family unit, the community and the country because they must always be protected, said the prime minister’s wife Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail.

Wan Azizah said this in her speech when officiating the National Children’s Day Celebration 2022 to honour children and their rights in line with the Convention on the Rights of the Child here today.

She said Children’s Day should be an effective starting point to acknowledge, promote and celebrate children’s rights, adding that it should be translated into efficient actions and debates that ultimately become the basis for a more prosperous life for children.

The former deputy prime minister also called on government agencies to establish close cooperation through the sharing of resources and data to improve efficiency in service delivery related to the interests of children.

“I also believe that effective communication is important as most issues related to children cut across ministries and departments. This strategic cooperation can also be further expanded with the involvement of non-governmental organisations (NGOs), the private sector, communities and so on,” she added.

Also present were the Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development secretary-general Datuk Dr Maziah Che Yusoff, its deputy secretary-general (Strategic) Chua Choon Hwa and JKM director-general Datuk Shaharuddin Abu Sohot.

JKM has implemented various programmes and activities throughout the country in conjunction with the celebration themed ‘Inclusion and diversity for every child’ starting June 7.
