KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 7– Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob has written to his Singapore counterpart Lee Hsien Loong seeking leniency in the case of a Malaysian scheduled to be hanged for drug trafficking, it was learned today.

Bernama understands that Ismail Sabri has asked the Singapore government to look into staying the execution and seeks a fresh application for presidential clemency in the case of D. Nagaenthran.

Nagaenthran, 33, claimed by his lawyers to be intellectually disabled, was arrested by Singaporean authorities on April 22, 2009, and charged with smuggling 42.72 grams of diamorphine. He was sentenced to death by the High Court of Singapore on Nov 22, 2010.

The process of appeal went through to the final stage, and his application for presidential clemency was rejected on June 1, 2020.

The death sentence is scheduled to be carried out on Nov 10.

MELAKA, Nov 7 — The Election Commission (EC) is all set to execute the nomination process for the Melaka state election tomorrow, said its chairman Datuk Abdul Ghani Salleh.

He said everything has been prepared according to strict standard operating procedures (SOP) and hoped the process would run smoothly.

“We have been in close contact with various quarters including the (Malaysian) Meteorological Department on the weather forecast and we are ready it if rains during the nominations,” he told Bernama.

Checks by Bernama at Kolej Komuniti Selandar main hall, one out of the 28 nomination centres for the Melaka state election, found over 20 EC staff making the final preparations for the nomination process tomorrow.

It includes finalising the position of the candidate, proposer and officers in the hall according to the stipulated SOP, in addition to the process of reviewing the forms, documents and insolvency status that the candidates will submit to the Returning Officer.

The nomination process is scheduled for one hour from 9 am.

Meanwhile, the nomination centre for the Asahan state seat is expected to be among the focus tomorrow as it is likely to see a three-cornered fight between Barisan Nasional’s candidate Fairul Nizam Roslan, Datuk Seri Idris Haron (PKR) and Danish Basil (Gerakan).

Other nomination centres are for the Tanjung Bidara, Lendu, Bukit Katil and Pengkalan Batu seats which will see a clash of political party leaders in Melaka.

MELAKA, Nov 7 — Gatherings and processions by supporters of contesting political parties at candidate nomination centres on nomination day tomorrow for the Melaka state election are not allowed.

Election Commission (EC) secretary Datuk Ikmalrudin Ishak said only the candidate, proposer and seconder are allowed to enter the nomination centre.

“Supporters of political parties representing the candidate are not allowed to be present at the candidate nomination centre,” he said in a statement today.

Ikmalrudin said candidate nomination papers can be submitted from 9 am to 10 am to Returning Officer at 28 nomination centres by the candidate, proposer and seconder or any two persons or any one of them.

He said candidates representing political parties are reminded to bring the approval letter to use the party’s symbol which should be attached when submitting their nomination forms.

He also said to facilitate the nomination, candidates are reminded to fill and check the form with the office of the returning officer or the Melaka Election Commission office before nomination day tomorrow.

“Apart from that, candidates are urged to make payment for deposit earlier. They should bring the payment receipt on nomination day as proof of payment.

“This is aimed at ensuring a smooth nomination process tomorrow,” he said.

Meanwhile, EC also called on all candidates involved to abide by the laws, ethics and directives issued by police, Health Ministry and local authorities on the day.

EC has set polling day for Melaka state election on Nov 20, nomination day on Nov 8 and early voting on Nov 16, following the dissolution of the State Assembly on Oct 4 when four assemblymen withdrew their support for Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Seri Sulaiman Md Ali.

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 7 — The Keluarga Malaysia (Malaysian Family) concept gives the emphasis that the government was no longer just working as a team, but a family, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said.

In a Facebook post, he said the concept meant that the government has taken an approach of care and love for each other.

“Keluarga Malaysia understands one another, is tolerant and cares for each other. Not just one’s self, but other family members as well. This is the concept that has been applied in the government.

“(Meaning) we don’t work as a team anymore, but as a family. Thank you all members of Keluarga Malaysia. You all remain close to my heart,” he said in the posting.

The prime minister last month launched the Keluarga Malaysia concept, which is based on the values of inclusivity, togetherness and gratitude.

It was introduced by Ismail Sabri in his inaugural speech after being appointed as the ninth Prime Minister in August.

MELAKA, Nov 7 — Candidates tested positive for COVID-19 will not be prevented from contesting in the Melaka state election this time, said Election Commission (EC) chairman Datuk Abdul Ghani Salleh.

However he said candidates’ nomination papers should be submitted by the allocated time through their proposer or seconder.

“There is no problem for them (candidates) to contest, as long as they submit the nomination forms on time,” he told Bernama at Menara Persekutuan here today.

He said COVID-19 screening for candidates is not mandatory but encouraged.

Meanwhile, Abdul Ghani said to ensure a smooth nomination process, the EC has also set up a special tent at the nomination centre should a candidate turns up with COVID-19 symptoms on the day.

“This tent will be managed by Health Ministry (MOH) and EC personnel. At the main entrance of the nomination centre, candidates’ body temperature will be checked and if the reading is above 37.5 degrees Celsius, they will be directed to the tent,” said Abdul Ghani.

He said checking and submission of the candidate’s nomination forms would be managed by the EC officers on duty at the tent.

Some 12,900 workers from various agencies including the MOH, PDRM and the local authorities would be involved in this state election.

“Of the number, 1,460 are PDRM members and 806 are MOH staff. We hope all supporters of contesting political parties will not gather or hold a procession near the nomination centre area and abide by all the standard operating procedures (SOP),” he added.
