COVID-19: No reports of burnout among armed forces personnel

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 13 — The Malaysian Armed Forces (ATM) have not received any reports of its personnel suffering from extreme stress (burnout) after being assigned to control the security of the country in an effort to break the chain of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Chief of Defence Force, Gen Tan Sri Affendi Buang, said that this was because ATM personnel understand their responsibilities and roles to continue to serve the country to fight the enemy, including the COVID-19 pandemic.

Affendi said that the military personnel understand that they have this responsibility and are fully committed to addressing the COVID-19 threat.

“The ATM views the pandemic as a form of threat that is dangerous and can result in deaths,” he said in a special interview in conjunction with the 88th Armed Forces Day at the Wisma Perwira ATM here.

He said that the ATM was always looking for ways to uplift the spirit of its personnel, to ensure that they are mentally and physically at their best.

“Thus far, the ATM has yet to receive any reports of its personnel suffering from burnout,” he said.

In another development, Affendi said that the ATM detected that a majority of its personnel have been facing financial difficulties that indirectly put them in the B40 category after retirement.

“One of the causes is that they do not have a second career opportunity after retirement for survival,”

“Therefore, the ATM is always looking for a solution to this issue, including encouraging their wives to work part-time and help in generating family income,” he said.

Affendi said that the ATM would also ensure that its personnel who are retiring are mentally prepared during the retirement phase so that they can live comfortably.

“Most army personnel retire at the age of 40, and they all have commitments and monthly expenses like car and housing loans.

“We also see that their wives, who have skills, can help generate income through online businesses, which will help their husbands after retirement,” he said.

Lazada honours its delivery frontliners’ dedication amid COVID-19 pandemic

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 13 — While we enjoy shopping on e-commerce platform Lazada Malaysia (Lazada) from the comfort of our homes, delivery frontliners have been continuously working hard to ensure packages are delivered safely to customers, regardless of the location.

Lazada, in a statement today, said that delivery personnel face each working day, rain or shine, knowing that they stand the chance of being infected with COVID-19, just to ensure Malaysians receive their daily necessities safely.

“Although the pandemic is still ongoing, logistics frontliners continue to work hard to ensure orders are delivered to customers’ doorsteps as we continue to make purchases from home safely.

Companies like Lazada need to improve the workplace environment and implement strict appropriate safety measures, including daily sanitisation of warehouses and logistics hubs, as well as contactless delivery methods to protect their dedicated frontliners during the pandemic.

“Thanks to their hard work and commitment, they are the true unsung heroes in these challenging times,” Lazada said.

Lazada logistics employee, Shairul Rizal, 47, is no stranger to working 12 hours a day delivering hundreds of packages to six different areas, starting in the morning when the lorry bringing in the first batch of items arrives, until his lunchbreak at noon.

He then resumes work at 1 pm when the second lorry arrives, continuing until 7 pm, when he finally calls it a day.

“During Lazada’s mega campaigns such as the 9.9 Biggest Brands Sale, I might be on the road for more than 12 hours trying to fulfil the spike in deliveries during the period. Although this means I have to work harder than usual, I feel excited and actually look forward to campaigns as I will receive a higher commission that I can use to spend on my family,” he said.

The father of four said that he is always careful when making deliveries and tries his best to reduce any physical contact with others, as well as wearing a face mask and frequently sanitising to protect his family from the threat of infection.

He was also thankful for the contactless delivery procedure set throughout the pandemic, in addition to the mandatory health and safety protocols implemented at his workplace.

Meanwhile, Petaling Jaya hub manager, Azmi Othman, who puts in between 15 to 18 hours daily, is responsible for leading his team, which he always prioritises above anything else. He views them as his family, and values their dedication as they relentlessly deliver package after package, regardless of the weather conditions.

“My main task, obviously, is to ensure that my team is protected while on the job, and that customers receive their packages safely. There are no regular working hours in this area of work. Every day will be different.

“Therefore, I try to do whatever I can to motivate my team and encourage them to greater success, as I feel happy watching them achieve their maximum potential and fulfilling their dreams,” he added.
