Cebu Pacific wins Routes Asia’s airline category

MANILA: Philippine low-cost carrier Cebu Pacific (CEB) bested four other international carrier finalists in this year’s Routes Asia airline category.

The Routes Asia Awards honors the excellence in airport and destination marketing, and its airline category highlights collaborative efforts in successful routes.

“We are honored to receive this award. This reflects CEB’s unwavering commitment to providing our passengers with exceptional service, expanding our network connectivity, and making air travel more accessible and affordable,” CEB president Alexander Lao said in a statement Thursday.

The Gokongwei-led airline said they were recognized for their collaborative efforts with airports, local and international destination partners, and their initiatives to incorporate sustainable practices in operations.

Among these efforts are the resumption of CEB’s Clark hub and the launch of 15 destinations in 2023.

The carrier also adopted electric vehicles for ground operations and has incorporated sustainable avia
tion fuel (SAF) in some of its flights. It will also incorporate SAF into its commercial network by 2030.

Other finalists in the airline category were Cathay Pacific, Singapore Airlines, China Southern Airlines, and Air India.

Winners were revealed in Malaysia on Wednesday.

3 new moons discovered orbiting Uranus, Neptune

ISTANBUL: The Minor Planet Center of the Paris-based International Astronomical Union has announced the discovery of three new moons orbiting the ice giants of the solar system, Uranus and Neptune.

Multiple observations and ‘special image-processing techniques’ are crucial in confirming the existence of these ‘faint and distant’ moons, Carnegie Science said in a statement issued last week, citing Astronomer Scott Sheppard from the Carnegie Institution for Science in Washington, who played a leading role in utilizing the Magellan telescopes in Chile and collaborating with colleagues from NASA and universities.

Uranus gets its 1st new moon in 20 years

The moon, provisionally named S/2023 U1, is only 8 kilometers (4.9 miles) in diameter and takes 680 days to orbit Uranus, according to Carnegie Science, which highlights the exciting discoveries of researchers in astronomy, Earth and planetary science.

It will eventually be named after a Shakespeare play, joining moons like Oberon, Titania, and Ariel, it added
.

Neptune welcomes 2 new moons

It said S/2002 N5, the brighter of the two, measures about 23 kilometers (14.2 miles) and takes nearly nine years to orbit Neptune.

The statement said S/2021 N1, the fainter one, is around 14 kilometers (8.6 miles) in diameter and takes almost 27 years to complete its orbit.

Both will be given Greek mythological names, similar to the existing Neptunian moons.

Their orbits and positions suggest that they may be fragments of larger moons shattered by collisions in the solar system’s early days.

These discoveries add to the evidence of similar moon groupings around all four giant planets, supporting the theory of collisions shaping the solar system’s evolution.

While current technology may miss even smaller moons, these discoveries open doors to further exploration and understanding of the solar system’s formation and history.

DOST unveils Filipino-made e-boat

MANILA: The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) officially introduced on Thursday the Filipino-made Safe, Efficient and Sustainable Solar-Assisted Plug-In Electric Boat (SESSY E-Boat) via a demo run at the Manila Yacht Club.

Developed by researchers from Mapua University, the PHP19-million project was co-funded by the DOST and the Department of Energy.

DOST-Philippine Council for Industry, Energy and Emerging Technology Research and Development (PCIEERD) Director Enrico Paringit said the boat is highly efficient considering its size and form.

“It has a quiet motor and less (impact) to (the) environment if energy is sourced from solar,” Paringit told the Philippine News Agency.

The boat can accommodate 10 passengers and two crew, but Paringit said the seats could also be reconfigured for certain purposes such as diving or snorkeling.

“There are not many e-boats in the country, and the SESSY e-boat was designed for local maritime needs like for tourists,” he said, adding that the Maritime Industry
Authority also reviewed the SESSY e-boat for safety standards.

DOST-PCIEERD is currently looking for possible technology adopters of the SESSY e-boat.

While the prototype has been completed, the PCIEERD said small details like the aesthetics would be addressed. Mapua researchers are ready for SESSY’s replication and are working towards its commercialization.

The PCIEERD said the researchers selected the parts of the batteries and electric motors, and have also installed their own developed automatic identification system or AIS.

The SESSY could run for two hours after slow charging it for four hours. However, using the solar panels, the e-boat could run for an additional two hours and more as long as the solar energy supply continues, PCIEERD said.

CDO mayor orders arrest of gunmen in 2 daytime shooting incidents

CAGAYAN: Mayor Rolando Uy on Thursday ordered the immediate arrest of perpetrators behind two shooting incidents in the city that took place in broad daylight.

Uy called on Col. Salvador Radam, chief of the Cagayan de Oro City Police Office (COCPO), to identify and arrest two gunmen who separately killed a trader in Barangay Bulua and injured a couple in Barangay Iponan on Wednesday.

“Let us make sure that our police force will diligently run after these culprits in this shooting incident,” he said in a statement.

COCPO investigators identified the fallen victim as Leonard Lake, 38, who was gunned down after a heated argument in Barangay Bulua.

Maj. Jerson Estanilla, chief of COCPO Station 5, said they have identified the gunman who argued with the victim over a business agreement.

In Barangay Iponan, the victims were a couple, identified as Arnel Intes and Shenne Baclayo, both 28 years old, who were shot when they refused to surrender the motorcycle they were riding.

Work with environmental group

Mean
while, BenCyrus Ellorin, a consultant of the City Mayor’s Office (CMO), said the city government welcomes working with an environmental group, expressing concern over the alleged sale of cosmetics flagged by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Ellorin said the city government ‘would certainly be happy to work with the Ecowaste Coalition in this campaign.’

‘The best approach is for Ecowaste and the local government to partner in going after these products,’ he said.

In a statement, EcoWaste said it has already communicated with Uy to remove cosmetic products banned by the FDA for having high mercury content.

Cop killed in Bohol encounter honored

CEBU CITY: The Philippine National Police (PNP) in Central Visayas posthumously awarded the Medalya ng Kadakilaan (PNP Heroism Medal) to Corporal Gilbert Amper Jr., killed during the Feb. 23 encounter with members of the New People’s Army in Bilar, Bohol.

Brig. Gen. Anthony Aberin, director of the Police Regional Office-7, led the ceremony of honoring the fallen officer at an undisclosed place in Bohol on Wednesday morning and personally handed over the medal to the family of Amper.

‘(Corporal Amper) is posthumously recognized for his bravery and selfless performance of duty exhibited during police operation and execution of warrant of arrest against Alias Silong in Sitio Matin-ao 2, Barangay Campagao, Bilar, Bohol,’ the citation, as read by PRO-7 chief of staff, Col. Aladdin Collado, said.

Amper was killed during the almost three-hour gunbattle between the government forces and a group of Domingo Jaspe Compoc, alias Silong, who was also slain along with four others, including a 2022 Philippine Bar passer,
Hannah Jay Cesista.

Amper’s fellow officer, Corporal Gerard Rollon, was wounded during the encounter.

The police and Army soldiers were armed with warrants for the arrest of Compoc, who had a PHP2 million prize on his head, for various crimes of murder, attempted murder, homicide and attempted homicide.

Meanwhile, Eutropio Cesista, Hannah Jay’s father, spoke to the Cebu media on Tuesday following the cremation of his daughter at a funeral home in Cebu City.

Eutropio expressed an understanding of the government’s campaign against communism.

At the same time, he expressed disappointment towards the group his daughter had joined. He claimed he was against his daughter’s decision to join the group.

‘Wala akong galit sa gobyerno. Yung hinanakit ko doon sa sinalihan na pinipigilan ko pero nagpupumilit siya (I never became angry with the government. My anger is towards the group that she joined, we tried to stop her but she was adamant in joining it),’ he added.

Eutropio said he permitted his daughter to join
NUPL only after being assured of its credentials and intentions, giving Hannah Jay words of caution for her to be vigilant, admitting that he was unaware of the group’s activities.

Reject ‘false promises’ of NPA

Meanwhile, the National Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict (NTF-ELCAC) on Thursday urged the public to reject the false promises made by communist rebels in honor of fallen government troopers, including Amper, who have died in the line of duty.

“The NTF-ELCAC stands in solidarity with the families of those who have lost their lives in the line of duty, including Corporal Gilbert Amper, the brave policeman who made the ultimate sacrifice to protect our communities from the scourge of terrorism. Let us honor their memory by collectively rejecting the false promises of the communist terrorist groups (CTGs) and working together towards a future where all Filipinos can live safely, with dignity, and harmony,” NTF-ELCAC executive director Undersecretary Ernesto Torres Jr. said in a stateme
nt.

In reiterating its call to the public to refrain from joining the NPA, the task force said joining the rebel group not only perpetuates violence but also undermines efforts to achieve lasting peace and prosperity.

‘Furthermore, people who continue to be involved with the NPA run a great chance of becoming involved in illegal activities and being exposed to dangerous situations that could endanger their lives,’ it added.

The NTF-ELCAC said Filipinos should instead embrace the path of dialogue, reconciliation, and lawful engagement to address grievances and build a truly peaceful and inclusive society.

‘By opting for peaceful avenues of engagement and seeking solutions through lawful channels, individuals can safeguard their well-being and contribute to the overall stability of our nation,” it said.

Bidding for P290.67-M feeder port improvement set next month

BUENAVISTA: The bidding for the PHP290.67-million feeder port improvement to be funded through the Department of Agriculture-Philippine Rural Development Project (DA-PRDP) will commence anytime next month.

This developed after the local government unit (LGU) here has received a No Objection Letter (NOL) 1 from DA-PRDP, certifying that the LGU could start the bidding as it has complied with all documentary requirements, including the feasibility study for the project, according to San Jose de Buenavista municipal economic enterprise and development officer Darcy Bungay.

The bidding announcement will be posted for a month on Philippine Government Electronic Procurement System (PhilGEPS) before the LGU could proceed with the bidding process.

On Nov. 6, 2023, the local government received the certificate of funding eligibility for the feeder port improvement during the launching of the World Bank and DA-funded PRDP in Quezon City.

The improvement of the port constructed back in 2017 will allow the berthing of
commercial and roll-on roll-off (Ro-Ro) vessels to strengthen trading activities in the capital town and the province as a whole.

As of now, Bungay said only small fishing vessels could be accommodated at the port because of the small berthing area.
