20 passport issuing offices to operate on weekends from Jan 28

SEPANG– Twenty selected Immigration passport-issuing offices will operate on Saturdays and Sundays from Jan 28, said Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail.

These offices will be open from 8 am to 12.30 pm to address congestion due to the increasing number of applications and renewals of the Malaysian International Passport (PMA), he said.

The selected passport offices are Menara Ikhlas in Putrajaya, Jalan Duta and Wangsa Maju in Kuala Lumpur; Shah Alam, Kelana Jaya, Kajang, Puchong, Port Klang, Kuala Selangor and Kuala Kubu Baru in Selangor; Setia Tropika, Kulai, Muar, Kluang and Batu Pahat in Johor; Melaka; Taiping and Teluk Intan in Perak; Seberang Jaya in Penang, and Kulim in Kedah.

“All these offices will continue to operate until the congestion issue is under control. This is our commitment. This initiative is sensible and innovative,” he told reporters after opening the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) Passport Office here today.

Saifuddin also announced the extension of the operating hours of the Immigration offices at the Urban Transformation Centre (UTC) to 7 pm on weekdays and 5 pm on Saturdays and Sundays, except in Johor, Kedah, Kelantan and Terengganu, which are open on Fridays and Saturdays.

Saifuddin said the reopening of national borders on April 1 last year saw a 25 per cent increase in the issuance of passports, meaning 2.58 million passports were issued compared to 2.01 million in 2019.

“For this year, up to Jan 17, the Immigration Department has issued a total of 156,711 passports,” he said.

Saifuddin said the KLIA passport office could benefit 3.4 million local residents and its surrounding areas like Seremban and Port Dickson in Negeri Sembilan

“To date, the passport office has issued a total of 182 passports since its operation on Dec 16,” he said.

“JIM (the Immigration Department) will continue to monitor the response to this office before we plan to open a similar office at Kota Kinabalu Airport in Sabah in the future,” he said.

Friends in search of better job overseas scammed by syndicate

PONTIAN– Three Johoreans in search of a better career prospect overseas had been tricked by a syndicate, allegedly pretending to be an employment agency from China, that caused them to be stranded in Dubai for about a year.

Sharing their ordeal on behalf of Jason, 25 and Kelvin, 21, Jenny, 36, said they were duped by the syndicate promising them a lucrative monthly salary of about RM8,000 to work as customer service officers for an online casino that it advertised on the Telegram application.

According to Jenny, who previously worked as a factory clerk, she was informed about the job offer by her friend Kelvin. Hooked by the high salary offer, they applied for the job through the application.

“We left for Dubai in October 2021 and were taken to a bungalow that was the call centre. We were watched by around three to four guards,” he told reporters at the Tanjung Piai Parliamentary Representative Service Centre, here today.

Jenny said they were given a salary of around RM2,000, not RM8,000 as promised, for the first two months only, which was transferred to their family.

It was only after they did not receive the following month’s salary that they realised it was all a scam, said Jenny, adding that they then decided to run away.

Jenny said the three of them managed to escape on Christmas Day as they were left on their own at the bungalow.

“We left the bungalow and took a taxi to the Malaysian Embassy in Dubai. We were then rescued by the embassy and sent home on Jan 16.

“I am so happy that I managed to return home to celebrate the Chinese New Year with my family,” she said, adding that this incident served as a lesson to her and her friends.

Meanwhile, Tanjung Piai Member of Parliament Datuk Seri Dr Wee Jeck Seng advised young people not to be deceived by dubious job offers.

“Although this is not a new thing, it is becoming more widespread so I will bring this matter to the Parliament where perhaps the government can think of a way or mechanism to tackle this problem,” he added.

Political stability crucial for Malaysia to move forward – Sultan Nazrin

KUALA LUMPUR– The most crucial precondition for Malaysia at the moment is political stability so as to move forward effectively, says the Sultan of Perak Sultan Nazrin Shah.

He said political stability will allow planners to focus more fully on the longer term and put into place the policies and measures that are necessary to build confidence among investors.

“Further strengthening of our institutions is thus another priority, as it is these which will ensure the effective implementation of the various policies that will propel us forward,” he said when launching the book “Malaysia’s Leap Into The Future: The Building Blocks Towards Balanced Development” at Asia-Europe Institute, Universiti Malaya, here today.

He said Malaysia has strong institutional foundations in many respects and needs to muster the political will to drive the nation’s institutions forward in a progressive way.

His Highness said the country must find alternative means to prosper, bringing in fresh approaches such as that of the circular, “doughnut”, or “mission” economy, to build economies that work for the planet as well as its inhabitants.

Sultan Nazrin said the nation’s developmental model must also be genuinely inclusive as the approach in areas from education and human capital development to poverty and inequality must entail the inclusion of all Malaysians, irrespective of ethnicity and religion.

“We are all equally part of Malaysia’s success – in the present and past – as we have built our shared prosperity together; and into the future, as we meet its complex challenges together,” he said.

Describing the book, Sultan Nazrin said its ultimate focus was on ways to promote the structural changes that are necessary in order to boost and sustain our economic growth, covering topics from the implications of our current population characteristics and projected demographic change to the financing of economic development.

“It considers the necessary transformations that must take place in the agricultural sector to strengthen our food security, and those that are required in the manufacturing and services sectors to ensure we keep up with technological and other changes,” he said.

The book’s editors are Universiti Malaya’s professors of economics Prof Dr Rajah Rasiah, the late Prof Dr Cheong Kee Cheok and Tan Sri Dr Kamal Salih.

“Supply of sugar and wheat flour was not a problem throughout the operation. However, the ministry assisted in speeding up the distribution of supplies from the factory level to the wholesalers,” he said.
