‘Jom Ke Sarawak’ road tour rakes in over RM500,000 in potential sales value

KUCHING, Dec 14 (Bernama) — The ‘Jom Ke Sarawak’ road tour organised by the Malaysia Tourism Promotion Board (Tourism Malaysia) in Kota Bharu, Kelantan and Penang in May has raked in a potential sales value of over RM500,000.

Tourism Malaysia deputy director general (Planning), Iskandar Mirza Mohd Yusof said this success has encouraged the agency to continue the road tour in Sarawak to promote the latest tourism products and packages available in the east coast states of Peninsular Malaysia.

“The objective of this programme is to create a network between industry players in the three states (Kelantan, Terengganu and Pahang) with those in Sarawak,” he said when speaking at the road tour programme with tourism industry players from the east coast, here, today.

He said the initiative was the best platform to establish cooperation and business discussions to revive tourism activities in the relevant states.

“Tourism Malaysia’s initiative to organise a business-to-business (B2B) session provides the opportunity to discuss directly in efforts to develop new tourism packages,” he added.

Sotong Ride: KPKT urges stern action be taken against fun fair operator

PUTRAJAYA, Dec 14 (Bernama) — Stern action should be taken against the organisers of the funfair at Eco Grandeur Puncak Alam, Kuala Selangor for operating without a licence which resulted in injuries to three visitors last Monday (Dec 12), says Local Government Development (KPKT) minister Nga Kor Ming.

Need diverse, independent mechanisms in JAC members selection, says Tuanku Muhriz

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 14 (Bernama) — The Yang Dipertuan Besar of Negeri Sembilan, Tuanku Muhriz Tuanku Munawir has proposed to introduce diverse and independent mechanisms when it comes to the selection of five eminent persons on the Judicial Appointments Commission (JAC).

He said the persons selected must not only be independent from any form of political influence but also be inclusive, reflecting the diversity of our multi-racial society and the composition of our Federation, namely the Peninsular Malaysia states, Sabah and Sarawak.

“The inclusion of members from diverse and independent backgrounds will allow more stakeholders to be represented, thus, broadening the expertise in the judicial appointments process whilst maintaining the Commission’s independence. I have been advised that it is equally important for the JAC Act 2009 to be made part of the Federal Constitution and not remain as an Act of Parliament,” he said.

He said this in his royal address during the official book launch of “Upholding The Federal Constitution: The Judicial Thoughts Of Datuk Seri Hishamudin Yunus” here today.

Also present were Chief Justice Tun Tengku Maimum Tuan Mat and more than 30 judges of the Federal Court, Court of Appeal and High Court as well as Judicial Commissioners.

Tuanku Muhriz also urged civil society and other stakeholders to take the lead for meaningful discussions to achieve the aspiration of judicial independence as a means to uphold the Federal Constitution, the supreme law of the land.

“Lest we forget, the rakyat go to court to seek and obtain justice. Be it a criminal appeal, an appeal against the decision of the government or one of its agencies, or a private matter, the public sees the courts as their avenue to seek Justice,” he said.

During his address as the chairman of the 260th Ruler’s Conference on Nov 30,  Tuanku Muhriz had emphasised on the need to reform the existing judicial appointment process.

In his speech today, he further said whilst the primary intention of the Commission is to uphold the independence of the judiciary, it appears that its governing provisions may not be in accordance with such intent.

“As it stands, the Prime Minister appoints five of the nine members of the seven Commission. Under the Constitution, he also has the final say in the appointment of judges to the superior courts.

“We need to be guided by the principle of separation of powers of the Executive, the Legislature and the Judiciary. To achieve this, some reforms need to be considered to strengthen the independence of the Commission, and ultimately the Judiciary,” he said.

He added that independence is the essence of the Judiciary, hence, he said it is imperative that judicial independence is always maintained and protected.

Tuanku Muhriz said Judges are bound to uphold their judicial oath steadfastly and constantly remind themselves that their decisions have a profound impact on society and thus, the appointment of independent and competent judges is crucial to ensuring that this aim is met.

Meanwhile, Tuanku Muhriz hailed Hishamudin, a former Court of Appeal judge who had given life to many provisions in the Federal Constitution, especially those relating to fundamental rights.

“His years on the bench are remembered for his integrity and independence, which paved his unwavering commitment to uphold the supremacy and sanctity of the Federal Constitution.

“His decisions, including his many significant dissenting judgments, are based on his appreciation of the law, where he had elegantly embraced the ever evolving common law principles and applied them judiciously with the sole aim of delivering justice without fear or favour,” he said.

According to Tuanku Muhriz, a good judge must also demonstrate patience and compassion in the decision making process and in this context, Hishamudin was a judge who possessed all these essential qualities that has made him stand out as a respected judge.

Khaled to discuss efforts to empower higher education sector with universities

SEPANG, Dec 14 (Bernama) — The Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE) will meet with the universities to discuss efforts to empower the higher education sector, says Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin.

He said this would allow him to see more clearly the role and responsibilities of MOHE and the institutions under the ministry.

“Efforts to transform the country depend on the higher education sector, so for that reason, higher education must be on the right track and needs to get support and cooperation from all the ministries and agencies,” he told reporters after MOHE’s handing over of duties and appreciation ceremony here, today.

Mohamed Khaled said next month he will present the ministry’s direction and efforts to make the higher education sector, which includes private universities, polytechnics and community colleges, successful.

“The issues faced by students such as graduate employability, student financing and so on (will be given attention). We want to prepare them as highly-sought after people in the 21st century.

“We will also ensure the higher education sector can succeed in a country where the economy is based on knowledge and innovations,” he said.

When asked about the possibility of establishing more public universities (UA), Mohamed Khaled said instead of adding more UA, MOHE will focus on strengthening university leadership in addition to fulfilling the ministry’s mission and vision.

“Now there are 20 UA which are categorised as research universities, comprehensive universities and so on and we hope that all these (universities) can operate well,” he said.

At the same time, Mohamed Khaled said private higher education institutions also play an important role in making Malaysia a talent and knowledge hub, adding that to do so, Malaysia needs more international higher education students.

“UA cannot accommodate the needs of all international students…this role can be played by private universities,” he added.

President of Chile, Gabriel Boric, Inaugurates InvestChile 2022 International Forum

The President made this statement at the event that brings together more than 100 representatives of companies from 28 countries with investment projects worth US $4 billion.

President Boric

SANTIAGO, Chile, Dec. 14, 2022 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Over 100 representatives of companies from 28 countries with 56 investment projects worth US $4 billion and 1,900 potential jobs are participating in the InvestChile 2022 International Forum, which is Chile’s most important event for attracting foreign investment. InvestChile is the government agency responsible for promoting Chile in the global market as a destination for foreign direct investment.

The event was inaugurated this morning by the President of the Republic, Gabriel Boric, together with the Economy, Development and Tourism Minister, Nicolás Grau, and the InvestChile Director, Karla Flores.

The President referred to Chile’s potential to attract new investments since it offers tremendous opportunities and institutional solidity “that will help us to progress and improve the quality of life of our people, while making a global contribution. This requires reactivating the economy, where foreign investment plays a tremendously important role. Greater investment is synonymous with new jobs, which will restore peace of mind to thousands of families who have suffered as a result of our economic downturn, due to the COVID-19 crisis and the global economic slowdown”, said President Boric.

Good news for Foreign Investment

Minister Grau confirmed that the Forum is an extremely important opportunity for Chile to reinforce its commitment to foreign investment. “As you are well aware, despite difficulties worldwide, this has been a good year for Chile in terms of foreign investment. However, Chile has tremendous potential due to its institutional strength, its physical and digital infrastructure and because Chile can clearly combine the fight against the climate change with economic dynamism and greater investment in a totally exceptional manner”, said the Secretary of State.

Karla Flores is the InvestChile Director, and she sees the forum as a sign that foreign companies have a positive, long-term interest in investing in Chile. “We are fully committed as an agency to attracting investment projects to Chile so they can positively benefit our entire business ecosystem, add dynamism to our markets, generate greater competition, improve service quality and citizen access in key industries, all of which will improve the quality of life for Chilean citizens”, said Ms. Flores.

The first such Forum was held in 2014. It aims to provide participating companies with first-hand knowledge of emerging investment opportunities, new economic strategies and foreign investment policies in Chile. This is the sixth Forum and projects here focus on the Circular Economy, Global Services, Fintech, Tourism and Green Hydrogen. The companies that have submitted the most investment initiatives were from the USA, France, Argentina and Japan.
