Padang Serai PN candidate gives statement to police on ‘kerajaan zina’ remarks

KULIM, Nov 29 (Bernama) — Perikatan Nasional (PN) candidate for the Padang Serai Parliamentary seat Datuk Azman Nasrudin said that he has given his statement to the police over his remarks claiming that the recently formed government was ‘kerajaan zina’ (Government of Adultery).

Azman said he had his statement recorded at the Kulim Hi-Tech police station, here, at midnight last night.

“…I (admit) that I was a bit harsh that night. (But) I was referring to UMNO violating its resolution which has led to disappointment among the party’s grassroots members.

“This is about principles, the issue of mixed or unity government is another story. PN also accepts the decision of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong,” he said when met during the election campaign in Kampung Nesa, here today.

Last Sunday, Azman was reported to have issued a statement saying that there was a clear sign of rejection of Pakatan Harapan (PH) and Barisan Nasional (BN) following the formation of a unity government which he described as ‘kerajaan zina’.

S’wak to issue temporary documents for stateless persons under 21

KUCHING, Nov 29 (Bernama) — The Sarawak government will issue temporary documents for state-born individuals without citizenship aged below 21.

State Women, Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development Minister Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah said the document was important, especially for children, to have access to education and health services.

“The right to having an education is a basic right for every child. This is also another effort by the state government to identify the number of stateless individuals,” she told a media conference after the state assembly sitting here today.

Fatimah said Dec 2 onwards, the state ministry, with the cooperation of the National Registration Department, district offices and the Customs Department will be at selected locations to conduct registrations.

“In Kuching, we know in the Desa Wira area, there are children who do not have documents and their citizenship status is not yet known, there is a critical must…” she said, adding that the team will then head to other locations such as Sibu, Sepupok, Miri and Lawas as well.

“Through the issuance of the temporary documents for Sarawak-born stateless individuals, we will be able to know the number of people who are applying and also those waiting for approval,” she said.

She also said the state ministry had received a total of 60 applications since Nov 1, adding that applications can be made directly through the ministry or at district offices.

Applicants must have a birth certificate registered in Sarawak and also undetermined citizenship status as well as have applied for Malaysian citizenship under Article 15A of the Federal Constitution, she added.

N.Sembilan Budget 2023 comprehensive, ensures people’s survival

SEREMBAN, Nov 29 (Bernama) — The Negeri Sembilan Budget 2023 tabled by Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun is a comprehensive budget which could ensure the people’s survival despite a deficit of RM100 million, said Chennah assemblyman Anthony Loke Siew Fook.

He said this was because there was a good increase in various indicators, including the collection of Consolidated Fund reserves amounting to RM748.27 million as of Nov 15, in addition to investment and the shareholding of state statutory bodies.

“Although we tabled a deficit budget, it can be borne by the state government through surplus or the Consolidated Fund without burdening its finances.

“The state government also had to table a deficit budget because, since the COVID-19 outbreak two to three years ago, the state needs to spend more to ensure that the welfare and well-being of the affected people can be taken care of.”

Loke, who is also Seremban Member of Parliament, said this during the debate session of the Supply Bill (2023) 2022 at the Fourth Meeting (Budget) of the Fifth Term of the 14th State Legislative Assembly sitting today.

Last Friday, the Negeri Sembilan government tabled its Budget 2023, amounting to RM550 million, with an estimated revenue of RM450 million and a development budget of RM130 million.

In the meantime, Loke said the budget, which main focus is to ensure continuity in food supplies, needs to be implemented immediately and hoped that every allocation is appropriately channelled to the people.

“Of course, the challenge will be to ensure the inflation rate goes down, thus lowering the cost of living, which is also a focus of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim,” he said.

Meanwhile, Datuk Seri Awaludin Said (BN-Kota) said the state government should prioritise the welfare of the people, especially those still affected by COVID-19.

He said some people lost their source of income during the COVID-19 pandemic two years ago and still struggling with the economic uncertainties and need support to start small businesses.

“The state government needs to pay attention to this affected group by channelling aid for these two years so that they can be on their feet to support their families,” he said.

Meanwhile, Saiful Yazan Sulaiman (BN-Johol) said the people should be able to enjoy any development carried out by the state government through the budget, adding that it should not focus only on certain areas.

“This is something the people have been waiting for…especially when they want to build a new life after the pandemic. As such, this development planning must have an impact on the people,” he said.

The state assembly sitting continues tomorrow.

YAN targets to produce 300 doctors in five years

MELAKA, Nov 29 (Bernama) — Yayasan Angkasawan Negara (YAN) aims to produce about 300 doctors from students in the B40 and the destitute groups through the One Family One Professional programme over the next five years.

YAN Deputy president Datuk Shahrul Nizam Yunos said the programme is an initiative between YAN and Kolej Universiti Manipal Malaysia (MUCM) through an association with Majlis Amanah Rakyat (MARA).

“Under the One Family One Professional programme, students who are eligible will receive convertible loans to facilitate their education in the field of medicine or dentistry at MUCM as well as receive a monthly allowance to ease their burden.

“The programme will focus on Malay and Bumiputera students from poor families to pursue their education in medical or dental fields,” said Shahrul Nizam after attending the One Family One Professional programme, here today.

In the programme, 17 medical and dentistry students in MUCM received approval letters for their ‘tertiary education sponsorship programme’ which was also attended by MUCM vice chancellor Prof Dr Patrick Kee Peng Kong.

Shahrul Nizam said medical and dental students who received the study loans but succeeded in their respective fields over the next five years would not have to repay the loan.

He added that YAN was also working with the Department of Orang Asli Development (JAKOA) and orphanages throughout the country to obtain data or statistics on students who excelled in their studies and wished to become doctors.

Shahrul Nizam added that the One Family One Professional programme would also be expanded to other professions to produce more professionals in the country.

Meanwhile, first-year medical student Faziatul Dayana Sharudin, 19, said she was grateful to be among the loan recipients since it would help ease the burden of her family because the cost of pursuing the course was high.

“My father is a retired army personnel and my mother is a housewife, therefore receiving the loan will certainly ease the burden of my family. Apart from the loan, I will also receive a monthly allowance of RM870 and other facilities like accommodation.

“I can now fully focus on my studies and work hard to achieve excellent results so that my family will not have to repay the loan,” said the youngest of five siblings.

Cloudian Launches On-Premises Object Storage for Snowflake Analytics Workloads

Solution Offers Public Cloud-like Scalability and Ease of Management in Customer Data Centers

SAN MATEO, Calif., Nov. 29, 2022 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Cloudian® today announced the launch of its HyperStore® on-prem data lake storage in partnership with Snowflake, the Data Cloud company. Cloudian and Snowflake customers will now have access to data stored on HyperStore that is deployed on-premises in either a private cloud or hybrid cloud configuration. Designed from its inception to be fully S3 compatible, HyperStore provides the scalability and ease-of-management of a public cloud within an organization’s data center, offering enhanced performance, full control over security, data sovereignty, and reduced cost.

The combination of Cloudian and Snowflake addresses increasing interest from customers in running analytics applications on data in-place rather than having to move that data to a public cloud, which can be costly and time consuming. In addition to providing private cloud storage, HyperStore can also be deployed as part of a hybrid cloud strategy, with data being replicated or tiered to public cloud service providers.

Reflecting Cloudian’s leadership in object storage, it is the only vendor named a Gartner Peer Insights Customers’ Choice for Distributed File Systems and Object Storage1 for three consecutive years2. Key HyperStore benefits include:

  • Modular, limitless scalability – Start with three low-cost nodes and expand simply by adding devices to the cluster without disrupting analytics workloads.
  • Data resiliency – Get up to 14 nines of resiliency with administrator-defined data replication or erasure coding.
  • Ransomware protection – Through S3 Object Lock, prevent malware from encrypting and/or deleting data — enabling quick, easy recovery without paying ransom — and meet governance and legal hold demands.
  • Military-grade security – Further secure data with features such as secure shell, integrated firewall, RBAC/IAM access controls, AES-256 server-side encryption for data at rest and SSL for data in transit, as well as certification with the most stringent government security requirements.
  • Multi-tenancy – Allow multiple users to store and analyze data within a single, shared data lakehouse — without compromising security — while also employing multi-tenant billing, metering and quality of service (QoS) controls.

“We look forward to seeing our joint customers unlock more value from their data through our partnership with Cloudian,” said Tarik Dwiek, Head of Technology Alliances at Snowflake. “Together, we work to enable our customers to take advantage of our joint solutions in order to move forward with mobilizing their data.”

“Analytics applications are providing new opportunities for organizations to leverage their digital assets, including on-premises data, to achieve their goals,” said Larry Meese, vice president of products and solutions, Cloudian. “We look forward to working with Snowflake to help customers capitalize on these opportunities by providing a robust, modern storage foundation.”

Jeito Capital demonstrates European biopharma leadership with first exit with AstraZeneca acquisition of Neogene Therapeutics

Jeito Capital demonstrates European biopharma leadership with first exit with AstraZeneca acquisition of Neogene Therapeutics

  • Deal validates Jeito’s unique investment model of selecting highquality assets developed by world-leading teams in therapeutic areas with high unmet need

Paris, France, November 29th 2022 – Jeito Capital (“Jeito”), the largest fully independent international private equity firm dedicated to healthcare and biopharma, is pleased to announce the realization of its investment in Neogene Therapeutics, Inc. (“Neogene Therapeutics” or “Neogene”) to AstraZeneca a global, science-led biopharmaceutical company. Neogene is a global clinical-stage company pioneering the discovery, development, and manufacturing of next-generation T cell receptor therapies (TCR-Ts). Jeito co-led Neogene’s $110 million Series A financing marking the first investment since the launch of the fund.

Under the terms of the transaction, AstraZeneca will acquire all outstanding shares of Neogene for a total consideration of up to $320 million, on a cash and debt free basis. This will include an initial payment of $200 million on deal closing, and a further up to $120 million in both contingent, milestones-based and non-contingent considerations.

Since Jeito’s investment, Neogene has become a clinical stage company, and expanded both its pipeline of next-generation TCR-Ts and its manufacturing capabilities.

Dr Rafaèle Tordjman, MD, PhD, Founder and CEO of Jeito Capital, commented: This exit, Jeito’s first, represents a strong validation of our strategy of sourcing high-quality innovation in biopharma and supporting strong leadership teams as they identify the fastest route to bring much needed therapies to patients. This deal also illustrates the growing pharma demand for breakthrough innovation and by working with AstraZeneca, a global leader in oncology, we have every confidence that Neogene will be able to transform therapeutic options for people with hard-to-treat cancers. My congratulations go to everyone at Neogene on this fantastic achievement.”

Rachel Mears, Partner at Jeito, and Board Member of Neogene Therapeutics, added: Over the course of our partnership, Neogene has successfully grown into a world-class cell therapy company, making key senior hires, expanding its pipeline of innovative TCR assets, and entering the clinic for the first time. Jeito has supported Neogene through key steps and the acquisition by AstraZeneca is a true demonstration that our approach combining deep scientific and industry expertise can create value for companies and in time, for patients as well.”

TCR-Ts are emerging as a promising therapeutic modality in cancer treatment. Most current cell therapy approaches in oncology focus on modifying the immune system’s T-cells to recognize proteins expressed on the surface of cancer cells. In contrast, TCR-Ts can recognize intracellular targets, including cancer-specific mutations, thereby potentially unlocking targets previously inaccessible using cell therapies.

Neogene was founded by Carsten Linnemann, PhD, Chief Executive Officer of Neogene, and Ton Schumacher, PhD, Principal Investigator at the Netherlands Cancer Institute, Oncode Institute in partnership with Two River, and cell therapy industry veteran Arie Belldegrun, MD, founder of Kite Pharma, Inc. and Co-Founder and Executive Chairman of Allogene Therapeutics, Inc. With Jeito’s support, Neogene expanded its senior leadership team in key business functions including manufacturing, operations, and clinical development.

Carsten Linnemann, PhD, Chief Executive Officer, Neogene, said: “We are excited to work together with AstraZeneca towards our shared mission of transforming the treatment options for patients with solid tumours using next-generation T-cell receptor therapies. Our expertise, clinical portfolio and platform technologies in this area combined with AstraZeneca’s leadership in oncology and global footprint mean we are well-positioned to translate pioneering science into novel treatments for hard-to-treat cancers. Our thanks go to Jeito Capital and all of our investors for their guidance and support.”

AstraZeneca is building a cell therapy portfolio that aims to empower and equip the immune system’s T cells, to more effectively fight cancer. Their research teams are exploring new ways to target and arm CAR-Ts to increase their effectiveness in solid tumors and working to engineer off-the-shelf patient-ready therapies already developed from the cells of healthy donors.
