Phase Two of Putrajaya’s Recycling Innovation Centre will be built next year

PUTRAJAYA, Sept 30 (Bernama) — The Phase Two of the Recycling Innovation Centre (FIKS), which focuses on domestic and bulk waste processing, will be built next to the first phase in Precinct 20 here next year at a cost of nearly RM50 million.

Alam Flora Sdn Bhd chief executive officer Datuk Mohd Zain Hassan said the second phase will be equipped with incinerator technology and is expected to be operational in 2025, as the Tanjung Dua Belas landfill will no longer be able to receive waste from Putrajaya at that time.

“Phase two is important as whatever comes out from Putrajaya stays in Putrajaya….even when our lorries go to the landfill it will produce carbon, so we want to stop all that,” he told the media after the Waste is Amazing: Upcycling Competition 2022 here today.

Mohd Zain said phase two of the project is now at the Environmental Impact Assessment stage before construction will begin, adding that phase one, which began operations in 2020, can only receive dry waste such as paper, cardboard and plastic, and receives around 80 to 92 tons of paper waste a day produced by residents and commercial concerns.

“In Putrajaya, recycling is high and at the same time, we have several buy back centres that receive a lot of waste from Putrajaya residents and nearby commercial concerns,” he added.

Meanwhile, Perbadanan Putrajaya president Datuk Fadlun Mak Ujud said the Putrajaya’s current recycling rate is around 16 per cent and is expected to exceed 40 per cent by 2025.

PM Ismail Sabri orders further probe against Tommy Thomas

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 30 (Bernama) — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob has ordered law enforcement agencies to immediately carry out further investigation into the possible misconduct by Tan Sri Tommy Thomas in relation to the allegations made by the former attorney-general in his memoir.

He said the investigation would be conducted, among others, under Section 124(I) of the Penal Code – spreading false reports; Section 4 of the Sedition Act 1948; Section 8 of the Official Secrets Act 1972; and Section 23 of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Act 2009.

Ismail Sabri said the special task force to investigate the allegations contained in the book titled ‘My Story: Justice in the Wilderness’ had presented a report to the Cabinet meeting today and had submitted several recommendations for the government’s consideration to decide on the next course of action.

“The report has been prepared by this team over a period of nine months, starting from December 2021 until August 2022, detailing each of the allegations mentioned by Tan Sri Tommy Thomas in his book,” he said in a statement today.

Based on the investigation, he said the team had categorised the 19 important issues detected in the book into four main issues, namely allegations against the Judiciary, disclosure of government information and secrets, illegal actions, abuse of power and professional negligence as well as seditious statements.

Telecommunication tower to be built in Danum Valley – Mohammad

LAHAD DATU, Sept 30 (Bernama) — A telecommunication tower will be built in the Danum Valley conservation area here to provide wider and faster internet coverage facilities in line with the area being an attraction to international tourists.

Ministry of Communications and Multimedia (K-KOMM) secretary-general Datuk Seri Mohammad Mentek said construction of the tower is expected to begin this year and completed within four to six months if the weather is good.

“This tower will be able to ensure the communication network covers all the areas In Danum Valley, especially at its resort area, where I find that the internet facility is only available at the lobby area, with weak internet access in the rooms.

“Providing internet in this tourist area is a challenge. For example, the Danum Valley is very challenging because there are 300-year-old trees, so surely conservation efforts will be taken into account before construction (of the tower) begins,” he told Bernama here today.

According to him, the expansion of the communication network would not only be focused on inhabited sites in rural areas but would also depend on local importance, such as tourism locations.

“Internet is now a very imporant utility because there are tourists who are digital nomads, who carry out freelance work. Apart from holidaying, these tourists also carry out their work remotely, so our hope is to provide them with telecommunication facilities,” he added.

Meanwhile, Mohammad, who is also chairman of the Central Agency Committee for Application for Filming and Performance by Foreign Artistes (PUSPAL), said it was in the midst of promoting Malaysia, which has various interesting destinations, as a filming location to foreign production companies.

“We are bringing in several production companies to promote filming in the east coast of Sabah. In the Eastern Sabah Security Zone (ESSZone) area under the management of the Eastern Sabah Security Command (ESSCom), there are many resort islands and uninhabited islands that can be used as filming locations… this will convince everyone of the safety in the ESSZone.

“I was told that production companies from Denmark and the United States have shown an interest in wanting to film survival shows in Sabah and its islands. Several documentaries were previously filmed in the Danum Valley and that’s why, with the availability of the telecommunication tower, it will make it easier for companies to carry out production work here,” he added.

He said the main objective was not just to popularise interesting destinations in Malaysia but also to create job opportunities for local residents.
