Appointment of Judicial Commissioners in Sabah to be based on administrative mechanism

KOTA KINABALU, Sept 9 (Bernama) — Yang Dipertua Negeri Sabah Tun Juhar Mahiruddin has consented to the appointment of Judicial Commissioners in Sabah to be based on an administrative mechanism, said Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor.

The Sabah Government, he said, also concurred with its Sarawak counterparts that the consent of the Yang Dipertua Negeri (TYT) must be obtained first before the proposed appointment is submitted to the Judicial Appointments Commission.

“The TYT (Juhar) also agreed that another representative from Sabah and Sarawak be appointed to the Judicial Appointments Commission,” he said in a statement here today.

Hajiji said he had informed the matter to the Special Council on the 1963 Malaysia Agreement (MA63) meeting chaired by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob via video conferencing yesterday.

He also raised the issue of the need for security outposts at the Malaysia-Indonesia border to be beefed up.

Hajiji said during his working visit to the three security outposts at the border, namely Burst-Point, Wallace Bay and Sungai Melayu in Sebatik, he found there was a need for facilities there to be upgraded.

The Chief Minister said the state government will continue to pursue the 40 per cent special grant for Sabah under Article 112D of the Federal Constitution.

On the request for increase in parliamentary seats for Sabah and Sarawak in line with the spirit of the Malaysia formation, Hajiji said the prime minister said the proposal will be brought to the Federal Cabinet for discussion.

No second thoughts when it comes to Sabah security – Chief Minister

KOTA KINABALU, Sept 9 (Bernama) — The Sabah government has no hesitation when it comes to beefing up security in the state, said Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor.

“Security is of the highest importance and we will give our utmost cooperation when considering matters seeking the state government’s approval,” he said.

Speaking after a briefing by the Royal Malaysian Police on the current security situation in Sabah led by Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Acryl Sani Abdullah Sani at Menara Kinabalu here today, Hajiji said Sabah security is on top of his agenda.

Hajiji said he has been raising this issue all the time and the latest was during the meeting of the Special Council on Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) yesterday chaired by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob.

“I have requested for an increase in allocation to strengthen our security assets, especially on the East Coast,” he added.

Accompanying Acryl were Bukit Aman Internal Security and Public Order Department director Datuk Hazani Ghazali, Sabah Police Commissioner Datuk Idris Abdullah as well as senior officers from Bukit Aman and Sabah Police Headquarters.

Hajiji also reiterated his call to upgrade the General Operations Force (GOF) security outposts at the Malaysia-Indonesia border in Sebatik Island.

During the briefing, Hajiji was told that two new GOF battalions would be set up at Nabawan and Kunak in addition to the existing five battalions in the state.

With seven GOF battalions, Sabah will have the largest GOF presence in the country.

Also proposed was the establishment of the Skuadron 69 Commando to be stationed in Lahad Datu, at the new marine police base in Kampung Lok Poring, Sepanggar and a police training centre or Pulapol at Kampung Laya-Laya, Tuaran.

On the request for an additional area at the police air unit base in Tanjung Aru, Hajiji informed that it had already been approved.

PM Ismail Sabri extends condolences over demise of Queen Elizabeth II

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 9 (Bernama) — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob representing the entire Keluarga Malaysia expressed condolences and sadness to the Royal family, government and people of the United Kingdom on the death of Queen Elizabeth II.

He said Her Majesty, who was also the longest-reigning monarch of Britain, was known for her dedication to looking after the welfare of her people.

in a post on his Facebook, the Prime Minister said her services in maintaining good relations between the United Kingdom and countries around the world including Malaysia will always be remembered and appreciated.

“I hope Her Majesty’s royal family and the people will continue to persevere in the face of this moment of grief,” he said.

Meanwhile, on his Twitter page, Ismail Sabri described the passing of Her Majesty as a truly irreparable loss to the Commonwealth and the world.

Buckingham Palace on Thursday announced Queen Elizabeth II, has died at the age of 96.

Ismail Sabri also issued a letter of condolence to his United Kingdom counterpart Elizabeth Truss.

In the letter, which was shared by the Prime Minister’s Office, he said Her Majesty would always be remembered for her selfless devotion to her service.

“She will be respected dearly for her unwavering commitment to the Commonwealth and her contribution in efforts to strengthen bilateral ties between the United Kingdom and Malaysia.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the bereaved people of the United Kingdom during this time of mourning and sorrow,” he wrote.

Malaysia Day preparation is 40 per cent complete

MELAKA, Sept 9 (Bernama) — Preparations for Malaysia Day 2022 celebration on Sept 16 at the Independence Declaration Memorial Square in Banda Hilir here is 40 per cent complete.

Melaka State Secretary Datuk Zaidi Johari said the rehearsal for the celebration would be held on Sept 13.

“So far, preparations for the Malaysia Day 2022 celebration are going smoothly and it involves various government agencies and departments,” he told reporters here today.

More than 2,000 parking spaces will be made available near the celebration venue, including Dataran Pahlawan, Menara Taming Sari and Pahlawan Walk, he said.

He said Panorama Melaka would also provide shuttle bus service in certain areas to facilitate visitors to the celebration site in an effort to reduce traffic congestion that may occur before and after the celebration.

Zaidi said no route or road would be closed during the celebration as it would be held at no vehicle access area.

“Visitors are advised to turn up early to avoid congestion as well as wear their face mask,” he said.

‘Konsert Rakyat’ will be held for an hour until midnight and will feature renowned artistes such as Datuk M. Nasir, Ernie Zakri, Misha Omar and Liza Hanim.

Pahang to fly state flag half-mast over demise of Queen Elizabeth II

KUANTAN, Sept 9 (Bernama) — The Pahang flag will be flown half-mast for three days from tomorrow (Sept 10) as a mark of respect for Queen Elizabeth II, who passed away yesterday.

Pahang state secretary, Datuk Seri Dr Sallehuddin Ishak in a statement today said that this was in line with the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah directive.

Yesterday, Buckingham Palace announced the demise of the longest-reigning monarch in British history at Balmoral, Scotland. She was 96.

Pahang Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Wan Rosdy Wan Ismail in a statement posted on his official social media page expressed his condolences to the British Royal Family, all its people and Commonwealth citizens over the demise.

Penang first northern state to have 5G network coverage

GEORGE TOWN, Sept 9 (Bernama) — Penang is now the first state in the northern region to have fifth-generation (5G) broadband cellular network coverage after its launch in the state today.

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said through the first phase of the 5G implementation plan in Penang, by Digital Nasional Berhad (DNB), a total of 151 sites have been identified to launch the 5G spectrum in areas on the island this year.

“From the 151 sites, 58 new 5G telecommunication structures will be built and the remaining 93 structures are upgrades from existing communication structures,” he told reporters at the 5G Network Launch Ceremony here today.

He said for 2023, through phase two of the 5G implementation plan in Penang, a total of 235 5G standard communication structures will be built in the Seberang Perai area and an additional 77 5G communication structures on the island, especially in the Northeast region.

Chow also said as a step towards 5G, which began in 2020, Penang has been selected as one of the six states in Malaysia for the implementation of the 5G demonstration projects (5GDP).

“A total of seven telecommunication companies have been selected to implement 19 “use cases” in Penang with an estimated cost of RM23.2 million which includes five “verticals”, namely, agriculture, education, smart state, manufacturing industry and tourism,” he added.

ECERDC, MDA to cooperate on increasing investment opportunities

KOTA BHARU, Sept 9 (Bernama) — The East Coast Economic Region Development Council (ECERDC) and the Medical Device Authority (MDA) are set to work together in increasing investment opportunities, especially for the manufacturing of medical devices at ECERDC industrial parks.

ECERDC chief executive officer Datuk Baidzawi Che Mat said the exchange of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the two parties was the result of ECERDC’s continuous efforts to promote the East Coast Economic Region (ECER) as a competitive investment destination.

“This MoU exchange between ECERDC and MDA is expected to further strengthen cooperation between both parties to attract new investment in the manufacturing of medical devices in the ECER Region,” he said in a statement today.

In the ceremony held at the Kota Darul Naim Complex here, Baidzawi represented ECERDC, while MDA was represented by its chief executive, Shariff Hambali.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob also witnessed the exchange of the MoU along with members of the ECER Council, namely Kelantan Menteri Besar Datuk Ahmad Yakob, Terengganu Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar, Pahang Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Wan Rosdy Wan Ismail and Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi.

Meanwhile, Baidzawi said during the ceremony, ECERDC also exchanged agreement documents with the Petronas Foundation aimed at strengthening the foundation’s continued support for the ‘ECER MEKAR Master Plan’ programme.

“The joint programme with Yayasan Petronas will benefit 600 students for academic programmes in three districts, as well as 1,880 entrepreneurs for skills training and entrepreneurship development programmes,” he said.
