Philips announces CEO succession

August 16, 2022

Frans van Houten to hand over as CEO to Roy Jakobs, a highly experienced international leader with a proven track record in delivering business value and extensive knowledge of Philips and its businesses

Amsterdam, the Netherlands – Royal Philips (NYSE: PHG; AEX: PHIA), a global leader in health technology, today announced that Roy Jakobs is proposed to succeed Frans van Houten as President and Chief Executive Officer, effective October 15, 2022.

The Supervisory Board and current Philips CEO Frans van Houten have agreed that with the end of his third term in sight, the time is right for the change in leadership. After a comprehensive evaluation of external and internal candidates, the Supervisory Board has unanimously decided to propose Roy Jakobs as the next President and CEO of Royal Philips to its General Meeting of Shareholders.

Roy Jakobs brings a strong international, operational and transformational track record, as well as a deep understanding of Philips, which is critical at this important juncture in the company’s growth journey. Roy Jakobs has been successful in turning around businesses in customer-focused growth organizations and has effectively strengthened the company’s Connected Care portfolio through successful acquisitions across hospital and ambulatory care settings. Since taking on responsibility for the voluntary recall notification/field safety notice for specific Respironics devices on behalf of Philips, substantial progress has been made under his leadership in the execution of the comprehensive program aimed at delivering a resolution to affected patients as fast as possible in consultation with the relevant competent authorities.

An Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM) of shareholders will be held on September 30, 2022, to appoint Roy Jakobs as President and CEO, effective October 15, 2022. Frans van Houten will act as advisor to the company – supporting the transition – until April 30, 2023.

“On behalf of the entire Supervisory Board, I would like to thank Frans for his transformational leadership of Philips over the last nearly 12 years,” said Feike Sijbesma, Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Royal Philips. “Guided by his vision and the execution of the strategic roadmap, he has successfully led the company’s transformation from a diversified industrial conglomerate into a focused, global solutions leader in health technology. Building on its 131-year heritage, he repositioned Philips to significantly enhance the future value-creating prospects of the company. Frans led Philips with genuine care for its customers, patients, and its employees.”

“It has been both a privilege and a pleasure to lead the transformation of Philips, over the past 12 years, into one of the largest health technology companies in the world, bringing innovative solutions to help our customers deliver on the Quadruple Aim of better health outcomes, higher healthcare productivity and much improved patient and staff experience,” said Frans van Houten, CEO of Royal Philips. “I have very much enjoyed working with so many talented and committed colleagues and building long-term relationships with our customers and other stakeholders. While I am proud of our many accomplishments, much remains to be done to enhance the resilience of Philips to manage through current setbacks and adverse market conditions. I gladly hand over to my Executive Committee team member Roy Jakobs in the knowledge that he brings the experience, energy, and commitment to take Philips on the path forward, with continuity for our customers and determination to improve the health and well-being of billions of people in a sustainable and responsible way. I wish Roy every success over the coming years and will support him as much as I can along the way.”

Feike Sijbesma added: “We are pleased to propose to appoint Roy Jakobs as the new CEO of Philips. He has an impressive track record in driving performance improvements and value creation across a broad range of businesses – both within and outside Philips – including in health technology, coupled with extensive global leadership experience across Philips’ health systems and consumer businesses throughout the company’s transformation. He is also deeply involved in Philips’ continuous quality improvement initiatives and is fully committed to patient safety. We are convinced that he is the ideal CEO to take Philips to the next level of performance. On behalf of the entire Supervisory Board, I welcome him as the next CEO of Philips, and we wish him success in his new role to further shape Philips for increased value creation for shareholders and all other stakeholders.”

“I am delighted to have the opportunity to lead Philips to improve people’s health and well-being through innovation,” said Roy Jakobs, incoming CEO of Royal Philips. “I aim to build on the company’s strong foundation as a purpose-driven health technology leader with deep innovation and clinical expertise, to serve the needs of patients and consumers today and in the future. I look forward to working with Philips’ teams across the world to deliver a strong value creation trajectory for shareholders and all our other stakeholders. I also want to take this opportunity to thank Frans for his trust and the great support he has given me over the years.”

In close cooperation with Chairman Feike Sijbesma and the Supervisory Board, Roy Jakobs will further improve and strengthen Philips’ performance as a leading health technology company with a planned approach. Key priorities are to further deepen the quality and patient safety capability across the company, complete the Respironics field action in consultation with the relevant competent authorities, and lead Philips to resume its profitable growth trajectory by addressing current headwinds, including strengthening supply chain resilience to enable the successful conversion of the all-time-high order book into sales.

Global Leaders Honor Rev. Dr. Sun Myung Moon on the 10th Anniversary of His Passing

Late Evangelist Remembered as Extraordinary Pioneer of Peace and Unity

Washington, DC, Aug. 15, 2022 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Global Leaders Honor Rev. Dr. Sun Myung Moon

on the 10th Anniversary of His Passing

Late evangelist remembered as extraordinary pioneer of peace and unity

The Universal Peace Federation (UPF) joined with other organizations, friends, and families to honor the 10th anniversary of the passing of Rev. Dr. Sun Myung Moon at a special program held near Seoul, Korea, on Aug. 14, 2022.

“Father Moon left a colossal legacy of peace of inestimable value in all aspects of human life,” said H.E. Brigi Rafini, Executive Secretary of the Community of Sahel and Saharan States (CEN-SAD), which has 25 Member States and represents 650 million Africans. “Just like Father and Mother Moon, I invite us to enter and remain in history as peacemakers in the world.”

Rev. Moon was born in 1920 in the village of Sangsa Ri in what is now North Korea. From his birth in Japan-occupied Korea to his Sept. 3, 2012, death at age 92, Rev. Moon lived every day with a passion for God, and a determination to liberate humankind from evil, and to establish an ideal world of peace.

His passing brought sorrow to countless followers and allies around the world, but none more so than his wife of 52 years. “Father, I love you. I miss you. These past 10 years have been a tremendous journey to realize the promise I made before you,” said Dr. Hak Ja Han Moon. “From now on, please do not worry. We will, without fail, complete our responsibility.”

Some 86 floral tributes and messages were sent from world leaders for the 10th anniversary, and the floral display from North Korea was so large that two men had to carry it on stage.

Chairman Kim Jong-un personally asked a North Korean peace institute to send flowers and a condolence message to the Moon family, said Dr. Yun Young-ho, Director-General of UPF International, who emceed the three-hour program at HJ Global Arts Center.

The North Korean message said, “Rev. Moon worked for the sake of world peace… and his achievements and legacy will be remembered for eons… We would like to wish prosperity and success to the International Family Federation and UPF.”

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo (2018-2021) recounted the arrests, tortures, and imprisonments of Rev. Moon’s life, including the North Korean Hungnam death camp that was liberated by UN forces led by US Gen. Douglas MacArthur.

Rev. Moon survived this, and many more severe hardships, “by faith and a loving God,” said Mr. Pompeo.

In 1954, Rev. Moon created the Holy Spirit Association for the Unification of World Christianity (HSA-UWC) to call for “the unity of all Christianity and for each of us to love each other,” said Mr. Pompeo. Rev. Moon also stood immovably against God-denying ideologies, creating the successful Victory Over Communism program and newspapers, including The Washington Times, established in 1982 in Washington, D.C., to stand for faith, family, and freedom. “America must be moral, it must be strong, it must be free and have a free press,” Mr. Pompeo said.

“Rev. Moon and his peace work impacted millions,” said Cambodian Assemblyman Suos Yara, who delivered a message from Samdech Hun Sen, Prime Minister of the Royal Kingdom of Cambodia.

Cambodian leaders are among those working with UPF, which was co-founded by Rev. and Mrs. Moon in 2005, in its quest to bring peace on the Korean Peninsula. In February, at the UPF World Summit 2022, world leaders signed the Seoul Resolution, which offers a roadmap to reconciliation. The resolution calls for “two states, toward one nation, one peninsula, one culture, one people,” said Mr. Yara. “This is a common vision for peace through mutual prosperity, interdependence, and universal values.”The formally named “Seonghwa Ceremony 10th Anniversary of the Holy Ascension of Sun Myung Moon, the True Parent of Heaven, Earth and Humankind,” told the story of Rev. Moon’s life, conveyed dramatically through dance, song, videos, pictures, and a live orchestra.

Highlights of the dynamic program included his 1935 Easter morning visitation from Jesus Christ who called him to carry forward the mission to build the Kingdom of God; the persecutions he endured when he started preaching; and his 1960 Holy Marriage to Mrs. Moon, after which they began sharing that “blessing” with other couples around the world. The program reviewed his thousands of speeches, campaigns, rallies, conferences, and visits held in all parts of the world, and his meetings with world leaders, including Soviet Premier Mikhail Gorbachev and North Korea Chairman Kim Il-sung. Details are found in Rev. Moon’s memoir, “As a Peace-Loving Global Citizen,” and Mrs. Moon’s memoir, “Mother of Peace: And God Shall Wipe Away All Tears from Their Eyes.”

Mrs. Moon closed the event by offering all of the nearly 30,000 attendees silken-cloth bags filled with rice caramels, one of Rev. Moon’s favorite sweets. Recalling the video clips of Rev. Moon shown in the program, she said, “True Father spoke to you, didn’t he? What did he say?”

“I’m sure he didn’t say ‘be hopeless’ or ‘lead a meaningless life,’” she said. “Let us move forward in hope,” practice true love, be stewards of the Creation, “and lead lives centered on God,” she said.

Decision to increase Kemas kindergarten assistants’ allowance by year end – Mahdzir

PUTRAJAYA, Aug 16 (Bernama) — The decision regarding the increase in Kemas kindergarten assistants’ allowance will be known by the end of the year at the latest, said Rural Development Minister Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid.

He said the Rural Development Ministry had submitted an application to increase the allowance as the monthly salary of RM500 received by the Kemas assistants does not commensurate with their increasing workload.

“Insyallah, (the decision will be known) this year,” he told a press conference after attending the 2021 Majlis Amanah Rakyat’s (MARA) Excellent Service Award ceremony, here today.

Meanwhile, Mahdzir said MARA is committed to continuing its efforts to improve the MARA Digital Mall, which was initiated in 2015 by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob, who was then the Minister of Rural and Regional Development.

“The efforts will continue because MARA Digital Mall is the prime minister’s brainchild. He has initiated the establishment of special premises for Bumiputera entrepreneurs,” he said.

Yesterday, Ismail Sabri, in a post on his Facebook page said he had instructed MARA to continue with the MARA Digital project to open up more opportunities for Bumiputera youths to get involved as information technology (IT) entrepreneurs.

Earlier, the prime minister made a surprise visit to MARA Digital Kuala Lumpur, accompanied by Mahdzir.

Mahdzir said discussions with the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) would be held soon to organise activities that can help promote the products of IT entrepreneurs in front of MARA Digital Mall Kuala Lumpur every weekend.

JHEAIPP to investigate Sg Ara non-halal chicken rice viral claim

GEORGE TOWN, Aug 16 (Bernama) — The Penang Islamic Religious Department (JHEAIPP) has been instructed by the state government to investigate claims that a Muslim chicken rice trader in Sungai Ara, near here had been selling food sourced from a non-Muslim eatery.

Deputy Chief Minister 1 Datuk Ahmad Zakiyuddin Abdul Rahman said the issue is serious as it involves Muslim sensitivity.

“I understand that for now, the investigation being carried out is based on what has been reported over social media as we have yet to receive an official complaint. We are responding to what is seen on social media only,” he told Bernama when contacted.

Ahmad Zakiyuddin, who is also Islamic Religious Council (MAINPP) chairman said the owner and workers of the said eatery have been identified and they could be called in for questioning soon.

Meanwhile, when contacted, Penang Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry (KPDNHEP) director A.Mogan said JHEAIPP has requested for a joint investigation to be conducted on the matter.

A video clip showing two men entering a non-Muslim shop to collect what is alleged to be chicken rice to be resold at a Malay eatery in Sungai Ara has gone viral since yesterday, which in turn has caused concern among the Muslim community.

Meanwhile, JHEAIPP said in a statement, investigations revealed that the eatery where the Muslim trader allegedly resell the chicken and duck rice does not have a Malaysian Halal Certification (SPHM).

JHEAIPP acting director Mohd Hanif Omar @ Wahab said the Muslim man’s chicken and duck rice stall in Sungai Ara was not opened, adding that they also found the man owns another stall, in partnership with a non-Muslim man, in a mall in Gurney Drive.

“Both premises do not have SPHM,” he said in the statement tonight.

He said an inspection conducted by JHEAIPP and KPDNHEP Enforcement Division found that food cooked at the food court stall was also sold at the eatery in Sungai Ara.

Mohd Hanif said the owners of the food court stall have been advised to apply for SPHM from JHEAIPP.

Anti-party hopping bill to be presented for royal assent soon

PUTRAJAYA, Aug 16 (Bernama) — The Constitution (Amendment) (No.3) Bill that prohibits Members of Parliament from switching parties will be presented to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah for approval soon.

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Parliament and Law) Datuk Seri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar said after it is approved by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, the bill would be gazetted for implementation according to the targeted timeline which is the first week of September.

“After receiving the royal assent, the bill will be returned to the Legal Affairs Division (BHEUU) and the Attorney-General’s Chamber to be formatted and the new bill format will again be presented to His Majesty for a second approval,” he told a press conference here today.

Once the royal assent is given, Wan Junaidi said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob will issue a notification letter to all menteri besar and chief ministers to inform the states of the amendments to the Eighth Schedule of the Federal Constitution.

This will allow all the state legislative assemblies to amend their State’s Constitutions, by including the provisions prohibiting members from switching parties, to be in line with the Eighth Schedule of the Federal Constitution as approved in the Dewan Rakyat and Dewan Negara.

“We want the states to follow our format accordingly so that the federal and state laws are the same.

“We are afraid that a difference in wordings will give rise to conflicting interpretation between the federal and state laws, he said.

Wan Junaidi said engagement sessions with the states will be held for the purpose of standardisation with federal law under Article 71 of the Federal Constitution.

The Dewan Rakyat on July 28 passed the proposed anti-party hopping bill, with more than two-thirds majority and later on Aug 9, the bill obtained the support of 52 of 60 Senators after two bloc votes, which is more than two-thirds of the Dewan Negara.
