TELUS Agriculture expands its scope, becoming TELUS Agriculture & Consumer Goods

Evolving to better transform and benefit the larger value chain, from producers to consumers

VANCOUVER, British Columbia, July 26, 2022 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — TELUS is broadening its business strategy to deliver data insights and a wide range of integrated digital solutions to customers beyond the agricultural sector, and changing the name of its agriculture unit to TELUS Agriculture & Consumer Goods as a signal of its commitment. Rapidly growing its assets and capabilities since its launch nearly two years ago, the newly rebranded unit is now well positioned to connect participants across the entire value chain, from seed growers to food and consumer goods retailers, and enable them to make sound, agile, data-driven business decisions to minimize costs and waste. Leveraging the latest technology, the industry expertise of its global team, artificial intelligence and TELUS’ Internet of Things (IoT) capabilities, TELUS Agriculture & Consumer Goods aims to vastly improve the way food and other goods are produced, distributed and consumed, and how these processes impact net profitability and consumer value, with a view to alleviating unnecessary strain on our natural resources. Currently, more than one in five TELUS Agriculture & Consumer Goods customers are manufacturers of packaged foods, beverages and products that include everything from cosmetics to bakeware and batteries.

“At TELUS, we are proud to direct our human and technological innovation toward answering some of the most significant social challenges facing our world. This includes ensuring global access to a nutritious food supply that is safe, secure and connected, whilst at the same time, helping to effectively manage the disconcerting amount of goods that never end up in the hands of consumers due to waste, spoilage, quality issues and inaccurate forecasting,” said Darren Entwistle, President and CEO of TELUS. “Through our expanded TELUS Agriculture & Consumer Goods business, our team is committed to leveraging our technology-driven efforts to optimize the production of food and consumer goods in a manner that is more sustainable and environmentally friendly. Together, we are caring for the planet for future generations, and improving outcomes for citizens and families around the world.”

Pre-consumer waste presents a host of significant issues, notably as it piles up in the world’s increasingly overburdened landfills, which are among the largest sources of greenhouse gas emissions. It’s estimated that at least one third of food alone is lost or wasted globally before it reaches shopping baskets. By tackling the agriculture and consumer goods industries’ complex data harmonization and management challenges, and putting data to work generating real-time actionable intelligence, TELUS Agriculture & Consumer Goods is making it easier for value chain participants to collaborate and enhance processes, allowing them to adapt more swiftly to evolving consumer preferences.

“Our solutions digitize and optimize key business functions along the entire value chain, from production to trade promotion management, improving efficiency and profitability. We believe that by better connecting these solutions and using the data insights that they offer, we can create more value for the entire value chain. At the same time, we can improve the safety, quality and sustainability of food and other goods, all in a way that is traceable and clear to the end consumer,” says John Raines, President of TELUS Agriculture & Consumer Goods. TELUS Agriculture & Consumer Goods is the largest, independent data insights and digital technology player in this sector, and our new name captures the breadth of the market we now serve.”

TELUS Agriculture’s expansion has included the addition of a series of assets to the business unit’s unmatched and growing portfolio, namely Blacksmith Applications in 2021. The U.S.-based company is a leading provider of trade promotion management, optimization and analytics (TPx) solutions for consumer packaged goods manufacturers and retailers. With a presence on five continents, the TELUS Agriculture & Consumer Goods team now works with six of the 10 top food and beverage suppliers and nine out of the 10 largest agriculture companies in the world.

Chain Announces Acquisition of Measurable Data Token

Chain acquiring MDT, RewardMe & MeFi for over $100 million

Chain acquires Measurable Data Token

Chain acquires Measurable Data Token

SAINT PAUL’S, Saint Kitts and Nevis, July 25, 2022 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Chain is thrilled to announce it will be acquiring the Measurable Data Token and its ecosystem products in a deal with a value at over $100 million (subject to the total number of MDT swapped for XCN of participating MDT holders). The deal consists of acquiring the Measurable Data Token (MDT), the native digital utility token powering a decentralized data ecosystem, as well as its blockchain applications RewardMe and MeFi.

The MDT ecosystem aims to empower data rewards for individual users, while accelerating the blockchain adoption in everyday life through various innovations.

Chain will be acquiring RewardMe, a cashback app whereby users get rewarded automatically in cryptocurrencies and digital gift cards for their daily purchases. With this acquisition Chain will launch Chain Rewards, which is envisioned to be a flagship consumer facing crypto super app, connecting individual users and merchants across the globe through the Chain ecosystem. The app will be rebranded as Chain Rewards in the coming months and the utility token will become XCN.

Chain will also be acquiring MeFi, a blockchain oracle which bridges capital market data with DeFi, and is custom tailored to bring traditional finance data into oracle-powered data streams. This will power ChainFi, Chain’s oracle system designed for Sequence clients to get access to trustless data and will have XCN become its native utility token.

Over 200,000 RewardMe users will now become part of the Chain ecosystem. An additional 30,000+ on-chain MDT holders on Ethereum and BNB Chain, as well as tens of thousands of off-chain MDT exchange users will become XCN holders.

With this acquisition, there will be a sunset of the Measurable Data Token (MDT) which will be burned and swapped for XCN token. MDT token holders will receive the benefit of the swap and will be expected to receive a $0.08 MDT token value for the swap. The details of the swap are being discussed with the relevant parties and the swap is intended to occur in the next few weeks and an exact timeline will be announced. The structure of the swap will be for every one (1) MDT token, the user will receive $0.08 of XCN based on a fourteen day time weighted average price (TWAP). Fifty (50) percent of the swap, which represents $0.04, will be provided immediately upon the swap and the remaining $0.04 will be distributed to participating MDT holders via an airdrop over 4 quarters ($0.01 per quarter based on a TWAP for each release). More details regarding the timeline and mechanisms for the swap will be provided in an upcoming blog post. Digital asset exchanges will provide separate notices of the support, if any. Both teams will aim to coordinate the swaps with exchanges to ensure a smooth transition to the best of our joint abilities.

Heatherm Huang, director of MDT, has been invited to join Chain as Chief Product Officer, alongside other members of MDT currently working on the two ecosystem products (namely RewardMe and MeFi) following the acquisition. As Chain proceeds to expand its team, the mission to build forward-thinking products, and improve its services continues. The MDT team are veterans of consumer apps, and blockchain innovations. MDT’s expert engineers, product designers and marketing professionals will be integrating into Chain’s current operations.

“I am deeply excited to announce that Chain will be acquiring MDT, and will have the opportunity to work alongside the company’s brilliant team. We look forward to continuing to scale our products and reach new heights,” said Chain CEO Deepak Thapliyal.

Heatherm Huang responded, “We are anxious to see our product transform and merge with Chain’s full suite of services. We believe that joining the Chain ecosystem will continue our mission of accelerating blockchain adoption into everyday life.”

Health clinics operate beyond office hours to help reduce hospital congestion – Dr Noor Azmi

PUTRAJAYA, July 26 (Bernama) — Several health clinics (KK) around the Klang Valley are now operating beyond the regular office hours to reduce congestion in hospital emergency departments (ED), caused by those with non-urgent medical conditions.

Deputy Health Minister Datuk Dr Noor Azmi Ghazali said the operating hours of the clinics involved have been extended until 9 or 10 pm daily and the staff are required to work according to shifts.

“Not all who come to the ED need to be in the red zone (critical). The purpose of the extended hours is to reduce the burden of staff at the department,” he told a press conference after officiating at the 3rd Health Ministry Dietitians’ Quality and Research Convention 2022 (DQRC 2022) when commenting on the issue of patient congestion at hospitals.

Dr Noor Azmi said the extended hours would continue as needed and this had been implemented before but was stopped due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Meanwhile, Dr Noor Azmi said Malaysia is facing a shortage of dietitians as it was reported that there are only 469 of them serving hospitals, health clinics, Ministry of Health (MoH) headquarters, sports schools and armed forces hospitals.

Admitting that there is an urgent need to increase the number, he said the dietitian staffing ratio should be 1:10 patients per day but currently the ratio is 1:33 patients per day.

“It is important to increase the number following the worrying dietary trends of Malaysians, coupled with the emergence of rare diseases,” he said adding that the ministry was applying to the Public Service Department (JPA) for the intake of more dietetic staff.

He said at present, in the absence of a dietitian at certain facilities, doctors and nurses would assist in providing basic nutritional advice to patients.

“If it is necessary to get (specialist) advice, the patient will be referred to another hospital. In addition, hospital dieticians make regular visits to these health facilities,” said Dr Noor Azmi.

Malaysia needs stronger protection system to prevent old-age poverty – Academician

KUALA LUMPUR, July 26 (Bernama) — Malaysia needs a stronger national protection system in place to protect its citizens from old-age poverty, said University of Malaya’s Social Wellbeing Research Centre (SWRC) director Datuk Prof Emeritus Dr Norma Mansor.

She said Malaysians could not afford to retire comfortably and need to be employed even after 60 years old like in Singapore.

“Older people who are staying in the job are not taking over from the young. They are doing something different. Studies have shown it is not substitutability,” she said during a session titled “Old-Age Poverty in Malaysia: Understanding the Societal Impact through Islamic Finance” here today.

The session was part of the half-day Invest Shariah Conference 2020 jointly organised by Bursa Malaysia Bhd and CGS-CIMB Securities Sdn Bhd.

Norma proposed a basic protection system that provides financial security post-retirement.

“Even among those who are financially literate, they do feel financially insecure, and it’s the reason why Thailand introduced the old-age pension post-1997 crisis. When they (the Thai government) interviewed those in the middle-income group and slightly higher, (it was found that) they were insecure if there was no secure basic monthly income for them,” she said.

Norma said the SWRC is recommending a multilayered retirement income, at least for the basic income.

This is shariah compliant, she pointed out, adding that the lowest layer of income should be tax-financed.

“That is the basic responsibility of the government. The second layer that we propose is that make it compulsory for every Malaysian to have social security insurance similar to the Employees Provident Fund. It can be low; in Thailand, it is 500 baht (about RM61) per month,” added Norma.

Parliament launches book on Dynamics in The Face of COVID-19

KUALA LUMPUR, July 26 (Bernama) — The Malaysian Parliament today launched a book documenting aspects of the institution’s management in ensuring Parliament continued to sit safely in the face of the COVID-19 outbreak.

The book entitled ‘Dynamics of the Malaysian Parliament in the Face of COVID-19’ launched by Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Azhar Azizan Harun includes control measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19 in Parliament in accordance with the new norms.

According to Azhar, the book could become a reference and guide for all parties in managing and coordinating the legislative body when faced with any pandemic in the future.

“The Parliamentary sittings were successfully held and the impact of contagion was minimal. The Malaysian Parliament had carried out its responsibilities as the country’s legislative pillar when the pandemic hit,” he said when launching the book at the Parliament Building, today.

He said Parliament also expressed appreciation to all parties involved in helping with the documentation, particularly the Ministry of Health, the National Disaster Management Agency, the National Security Council, the Fire and Rescue Department, the Royal Malaysia Police and the Malaysian Armed Forces.

Also present at the ceremony were Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin; Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri; and Parliament chief administrator Datuk Nor Yahati Awang
