Baling floods: Over 1,400 evacuees still at three PSS

BALING, July 5 (Bernama) — A total of 1,424 flood victims from 93 families are still seeking shelter at three relief centres (PPS) around Kupang, near here as at 8 pm today.

Baling District Civil Defence officer Rasidah Kassim, in a statement tonight, said all the victims were placed at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Jerai, Surau An-Nur in Taman Mesra Kupang and SMK Agama Yayasan Khairiah.

Several villages around Kupang were reported to be hit by flash floods following continuous rain for three hours yesterday, causing the water Sungai Kupang to overflow into the local residential areas by the riverside.

Meanwhile, seven houses were washed away by strong currents while about 70 others were damaged by the floods.

Baling floods: KDN mobilises agencies to coordinate assistance

KUALA LUMPUR, July 5 (Bernama) — The Ministry of Home Affairs (KDN) has mobilised all its agencies through ‘Op Bantu Baling’ to coordinate assistance and rescue operations for flood victims in Baling, Kedah.

Minister Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin said the operation was led by Kedah police chief CP Wan Hassan Wan Ahmad involving various agencies under the Home Ministry including the People’s Volunteer Corps (RELA), Immigration Department, National Registration Department, National Anti-Drug Agency and Prisons Department.

He said 164 police personnel had been deployed and a total of 44 police vehicles and emergency equipment were sent to the disaster location, including four boats, eight lorries and three four-wheel-drive vehicles.

“A total of 46 RELA volunteers have also been deployed to help flood victims in the affected areas and assigned to temporary relief centres,” he said in a statement here tonight.

Hamzah said those who wanted to get information on the flood situation could contact the police’s Malaysian Control Centre (MCC) at 03-2266 3333 / 03-2266 3444 / 03-2266 3451 or MERS 999.

The flood incident and water surge phenomenon that occurred at about 4.30 pm yesterday in Baling claimed three lives and three relief centres were opened to accommodate more than 1,400 flood victims.

Baling floods: Kedah Health Dept providing static clinic services at three PPS

BALING, July 5 (Bernama) — The Kedah State Health Department through the Baling District Health Office (PKD) is providing static clinic services at three relief centres (PPS) here, from 8 am to 10 pm.

Kedah Health Director Dr Othman Warijo said medical officers and paramedics were stationed at the three PPS, namely at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Jerai, Surau An-Nur in Taman Mesra Kupang and SMK Agama Yayasan Khairiah.

“On-call services are provided between 10.00pm and 8.00am by the Kupang Health Clinic for emergency cases,” he said in a statement today.

Dr Othman said the Baling PKD had also formed a health surveillance team which conducted regular inspections and monitoring at all the PPS.

He said the team will be responsible for ensuring that all the PPS are clean and the food is prepared in a hygienic manner

Meanwhile, Dr Othman said two health facilities under the Health Ministry, namely the Iboi Rural Clinic and the Kampung Pisang Rural Clinic, were also affected by the floods and water surge phenomenon that hit Kampung Iboi, Kupang here yesterday.

“Services at the two clinics have been suspended until the situation is safe as well as the power and water supply are restored,” he said adding that villagers in need of medical attention can go to the Kupang Health Clinic, located about five kilometres from the two rural clinics.

He said the State Health Department would always monitor the flood situation and work with various agencies involved in the management of the disaster.

MACP in talks to extend copyright period of P. Ramlee’s works

IPOH, July 5 (Bernama) — The Music Authors Copyright Protection (MACP) Berhad is in talks to extend the copyright period for the works of the late Tan Sri P Ramlee, which will end next year.

MACP general manager Mary Yap said this was because according to the Copyright Act 1987, the current copyright period is 50 years after the deaths of the work creators.

“This period is long. Like Tan Sri P Ramlee’s songs which copyright period will expire late next year and we are in discussions to extend it.

“We are in discussions with the authorities to extend the copyright period,” she said after signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Ipoh City Council (MBI) and MACP at the MBI building today.

Separately, touching on the MoU, Ipoh Mayor Datuk Rumaizi Baharin said MBI is the first local authority to obtain a license for RadioTV MBI (RTBI).

“The strategic and strong cooperation signed in this MoU ensures that RTBI and events organised by MBI have a valid license from MACP,” he said.

MACP is a collective management organisation that represents music copyright owners such as composers, songwriters, lyricists and music producers.

Remains of three Baling flood victims buried

The remains of the three victims, including a pregnant woman, who were killed when their house was swept by the currents in the flood here two days ago, were buried at the Kampung Charuk Bemban Dalam Cemetery here early today.

The bodies of the pregnant woman, Nurul Anis Abu Hassan, 23, along with her four-month-old foetus, her paralysed mother-in-law Salmah Mat Akib, 53, and brother-in-law Khairul Ikhwan Nor Azman, 14, were buried at about 5.30 am after they were brought to Surau Al-Istiqamah for the funeral prayer, which was attended by about 200 people.

The bodies of three family members were found by the rescue team yesterday.

Salmah and her daughter-in-law were found embracing each other under a pile of logs about 100 metres from their house which was washed away by the floods in Kampung Iboi. Their bodies were found at about 9.30 am.

The body of the third victim, Khairul Ikhwan Nor Azman, 14, who was Salmah’s son, was found at 11.55 am not far from the location where the two bodies were found earlier.

Baling baker suffers RM200,000 losses due to floods

BALING, July 5 (Bernama) — The strong currents caused by the water surge phenomenon that occurred in Kampung Iboi, here ruined the business of a baker, causing her a loss of about RM200,000.

Recounting her experience, Nurul Halimah Kuin, 29, said in the 4.30 pm incident the entire shop building located on the banks of Sungai Iboi was ruined.

“At the time of the incident the rain was not too heavy but the river water rose very fast and entered the shop. I ran to my house which was located nearby to ask for help from my father-in-law, but he was not at home,” she said adding that she went back to the bakery and saw that the water had risen to one metre.

She then shouted for help and the nearby residents managed to save her mother-in-law and one of her employees.

She told this to reporters when met at the scene here today.

She said the incident happened so fast that she did not have time to save any equipment, items and cash from her shop.

Despite suffering considerable losses, she said she was thankful that she and her family survived the disaster.

”I’m just thankful yet sad for others who have lost their loved ones in this disaster,” she said.
