Previous tough times prompt Kak Chah to offer free nasi lemak to students

JOHOR BAHRU, June 1 (Bernama) — Having gone through some tough times and facing financial problems until she could not continue her studies has inspired a nasi lemak stall operator, Siti Aishah Othman, to give free food to students.

Wanting to be known as Kak Chah, 32, who has only been doing business at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) for a month, welcomes students at the university to take food for free, through a note on her stall.

Her initiative over the past two days has gone viral on social media, with many students lining up as early as 7 am to take a free regular nasi lemak complete with anchovies, cucumber, peanuts and egg.

“When I started my business here, there were students who came every day to buy regular nasi lemak which I sold for RM1 a pack.

“I understood they needed to save and would not eat the regular nasi lemak each day, and some also paid with coins…so I just donated the staple to them,” she said when met at UTM, here, yesterday.

Two days ago, Siti Aishah’s note that reads, “Dear students, if you don’t have any money, don’t starve, come here and I will treat you. I was a student before, so don’t be shy,” went viral on social media and received various compliments and positive reactions from netizens.

The mother of a child who was only able to pursue a Bachelor of Writing degree at Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM), Puncak Alam for a year in 2010 due to financial problems, said that since yesterday, her stall was visited by many and it closed as early as 11 am.

“Yesterday, some people paid the RM1 pack of nasi lemak for 200 students, so I helped cook it and all were given away.

“There were also students who came but were shy to take it. I understand that we tend to be shy when we face hardship but I give out the nasi lemak sincerely,” said the eighth child of nine siblings whose parents had passed away.

The woman from Kedah said apart from giving regular nasi lemak for free to students, she still did business as usual by selling nasi lemak with side dishes to earn some income.

Admitting that the increase in the price of goods, especially chicken, has caused her not to earn much profit, she still sells the food cheap, such as RM4 for a piece of spicy chicken.

“I just don’t have the heart to charge a high price…I’m aware that everyone has to be prudent now as the price of goods has gone up, and students also have to save money. The profit is not much but I am till grateful and hope to continue giving for as long as I can,” she said.

TH develops four user-friendly, informative apps for use by haj pilgrims in Makkah

MAKKAH, June 1 (Bernama) — Convenient, informative and user-friendly.

These are the advantages that can be enjoyed from using the four applications developed by Lembaga Tabung Haji (TH), namely THhujjaj, Hajjmobility, E-Taib and E-bimbingan, when in Makkah for the Haj season this year.

TH Information Technology Division director of operations Shamsul Kamar Hussein Kamal said the applications were not only an important information channel for staff but could also be a reference for various questions by 14,306 Malaysian pilgrims.

He said users, even the elderly who are not tech-savvy, would be able to master the applications in a short period of time.

“Actually, there is an increased understanding of information technology among senior citizens now but those who have problems will be assisted by the staff members, especially when it comes to using the THhujjaj.

The THhujjaj is easy to use, even for first-time pilgrims, because everything related to the Haj pilgrimage can be obtained from the application,” he told reporters when met at the Al Jandriah Building here.

Shamsul Kamar said the TH IT team used the two years they had stayed away from Makkah, due to COVID-19, to improve the existing system and even managed to create new applications.

Given that technology is moving so fast, he said TH ensured it obtained the best and latest system so as not to inconvenience the pilgrims.

“The digitalisation development process was done after TH saw the need to facilitate the congregation … we started this THhujjaj over four years ago, including studying what can be improved by making various trial versions.

“It was completed during the Movement Control Order (MCO) period two years ago, but the test sessions could not be carried out because this system can only be used in Makkah,” he explained.

He added that Hajjmobility would assist staff in monitoring all movements of the pilgrims, especially in arranging transportation and accommodation, besides helping to cut down on the occurrence of management errors.

MAIS launches Wasiat and Hibah System

SHAH ALAM, June 1 (Bernama) — The Selangor Islamic Religious Council (MAIS) today launches the Wasiat (will) and Hibah (gift) System (SISWA) to facilitate the management of both services online in Selangor.

MAIS chairman Tan Sri Abdul Aziz Mohd Yusof said that MAIS, as the management body for Baitulmal, was always committed to giving the best service and becoming the main reference in managing the property of Muslims.

“MAIS has upgraded the existing system, e-Wasiat, to a new system which is smarter through the combination of two elements of property division planning, namely, wasiat and hibah.

“Through this system, applications and approvals will be fully managed online, apart from offering the use of Electronic Know Your Customer (e-KYC), which is recognised by Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM).

“In addition, SISWA also uses digital signatures which are subject to the Digital Signature Act 1997, and the applicant’s transaction confirmation is done via One-Time Password (OTP),” he said when met by reporters after launching the system here today.

Abdul Aziz said that to date, 3,196 applications for wasiat and hibah had been received, and MAIS targeted that 6,000 people would register with SISWA.

“We hope that the system will give a new facility to Muslims in an effort to help in a more systematic property division, and simultaneously avoid property issues among next-of-kin,” he said.

The implementation of the innovation could be made via https://siswa.mais.gov.my.

Further information on wasiat, hibah and inheritances can be obtained via the official website of MAIS at www.mais.gov.my or by contacting 03-5514 3773/3772.

Penang explores Middle East market to revive tourism sector

GEORGE TOWN, June 1 (Bernama) — The Penang government is exploring new markets in the Middle East region in a bid to revive the state’s tourism sector after the COVID-19 pandemic.

State Tourism and Creative Economy Committee chairman Yeoh Soon Hin said the state government was now actively exploring the possibility of making Dubai the hub of connectivity between Penang and the Middle East region.

“This effort is in line with the state government’s mission to explore the western tourism market to attract tourists from Europe, the United States and the Middle East.

“This is because these tourists have a higher spending power as well as longer holiday periods,” he said at the closing session of the Penang State Assembly sitting here today.

Yeoh said this effort could contribute to the economic development of Penang and Malaysia as a whole.

He said the state government had also produced ‘Muslim Travel Guides’ pamphlets in Arabic and distributed them in the Middle East Region through local industry players.

Yeoh is also confident that, after many discussions between the state government and airline companies, Penang will most likely welcome direct flights from Middle Eastern countries by the end of this year.

The State Assembly sitting continues tomorrow.
