State gov’t cant keep bailing out Perak FC – MB

IPOH, April 1 (Bernama) — The state government cannot keep helping to settle Perak FC players’ salary arrears, said Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad.

He said though the Perak FC management had applied for RM2 million for the purpose, the state government was firm in its decision not to get involved in any matter related to the salaries of The Boss Gaurus squad players.

“I urge that they settle the matter according to the proper channel, I’m sorry it’s not that I don’t want to intervene or am not interested in football or sports.

“I have to be fair to other sports associations and the people in the state. With RM 2 million, if I were to spend RM200 on poor households, how many thousand households will be able to benefit,” he told a press conference after presenting Excellence Service awards to staff of the Perak State Secretary’s Office at the Perak Darul Ridzuan Building here today.

Saarani hoped that the Perak FC management and football fans of the state would understand and accept the decision.

The media reported that Perak FC coach Yusri Che Lah hoped that the salary issue faced by his team could be resolved ahead of Ramadan while Perak Football Supporters Coalition president Syamsul Bahrin Putra Ahmad Shibi had called on the Perak Menteri Besar to intervene to solve the salary arrears problem.

Tourism industry players near-ecstatic to welcome transition to endemic phase

KUALA LUMPUR, April 1 (Bernama) — The Transition to Endemic Phase which started today has clearly brought relief and joy to the big picture, especially players in the tourism industry, after tolerating two years of low profile existence following the COVID-19 pandemic.

This momentous wait of the tourism players, especially the hospitality industry, has led them to exploit the long-standing opportunity to make initial and elaborate preparations to welcome the return of tourists both locally and abroad.

Malaysian Budget and Business Association (MyBHA) president Emmy Suraya Hussein said the hotel industry has long been ready for the re-opening of the country’s borders and welcoming tourists back, especially from abroad, by prioritising compliance with standard operating procedures (SOPs).

She said this was because the country’s tourism sector could not rely on domestic tourists alone as they were not frequent travellers, hence the opening up of the international borders would revive the country’s economy in the foreign tourism sector as momentum builds up on the domestic front first.

“However, I encourage Malaysians to travel within the country first because we have many interesting destinations. (Hence) If we can, to explore the many attractions in Malaysia. We also provide many interesting initiatives and packages to locals, so use this opportunity,” she said when contacted by Bernama today.

In TERENGGANU, State Tourism, Culture and Digital Technology Committee chairman Ariffin Deraman said the state’s tourism industry would be more vibrant, especially in the island segment as 80 per cent of foreign tourists to the state would head to resort islands.

“The state government has also approved a direct flight from Singapore to Pulau Redang which will start on April 6. So we hope this initiative will bring economic benefits to the tourism players of Pulau Redang, including the villagers there.

“Direct flights from Kota Kinabalu to Kuala Terengganu are also twice a week, on Sundays and Wednesdays, compared to only Sundays before. We hope that foreign tourists who visit Sabah will hop over to holiday in Terengganu,” he said.

Meanwhile, Pulau Perhentian Accommodation Premises Association president Abdul Aziz Che Abdullah said the resort island is expected to be flooded with foreign tourists around July or August, apart from some tourists from various countries being keen about tour packages.

In PAHANG, Tioman Santai Resort chalet operator Ab Razib Ali Awang said bookings at his accommodation were full until Hari Raya Aidilfitri which was received robust enquiries from local and international tourists such as Australia and Germany.

He said the arrival of foreign and local tourists is seen to be able to revive tourism in Pulau Tioman, which is rich in natural beauty, but was severely affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Pahang Tourism general manager Kamaruddin Ibrahim said the phase shift will kickstart the tourism industry, especially involving Singaporean holiday-makers which recorded one of the highest pre-pandemic international tourist arrivals in the state at almost 1.2 million visitors.

He stated that most tourists from the neighbouring country relish nature activities as found in Taman Negara, Pulau Tioman and Cameron Highlands.

Meanwhile in KEDAH, hotel industry players are ready for tourist arrivals despite not expecting numbers to the state to rise sharply despite the opening of borders.

Deputy chairman of the Kedah/Perlis Malaysian Hotel Association Razmi Rahmat said with two days left before the month of Ramadan, domestic tourists is expected to be a trickle, though they can expect more international tourists to come to Kedah.

Apart from that, Tourism Malaysia International Promotion Division senior director Datuk Dr Ammar Abd Ghapar hoped industry players would be able to offer attractive tourism packages, especially with Ramadan approaching.

“Activities during the month of Ramadan are also a tourism product that we promote to foreign tourists every year. So we hope during Ramadan, local industry players can promote attractive packages,” he said.

In PERLIS, Telaga Kabu Homestay operator, Mohd Ramzi Mat Tajri, 46, said with the return of foreign tourists, especially Thais, hotels and homestays in the state could resume operations even though it would not be as vibrant as pre-pandemic times.

“Homestay and hotel operators have also been suppressed for a long time, so it is hoped that with the reopening of the border gate, it will spark the tourism sector in Perlis again,” he said.

In PENANG, the Penang Tourism Attractions Association (ATAP) is targeting a 15 per cent increase in visitors to the state with borders reopening from today.

Chairman of ATAP Ch’ng Huck Theng said although ticket bookings to tourist attractions were not as many at the moment, but based on the experience during the implementation of the Vaccinated Travel Lane-Air route (VTL-Air) with Singapore, tourists to the state preferred as they would to buy walk-in tickets.

In addition, Penang Hotel Association of Malaysia (MAH) chairman Tony Goh said the association did not expect a significant rise in hotel occupancy rates in the state this month as it was still early days since foreign tourists needed time to plan their holidays.

Border reopening: Police to continue monitoring SOP compliance

MELAKA, April 1 (Bernama) — The Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) will constantly monitor and control all entry points and popular public spots following the reopening of the country’s borders starting today to ensure compliance with COVID-19 standard operating procedures (SOP).

Bukit Aman Crime Prevention and Community Safety Department (JPJKK) director Datuk Aidi Ismail said that although some SOP had been relaxed, the wearing of face masks was still in force.

“Within two years, our society has matured and learned from the experience of facing this pandemic, therefore the police hope that the public will take care and be responsible for ensuring that the spread of COVID-19 is curbed.

“We will also monitor the places that need to be controlled for activities that are still prohibited such as entertainment centres and so on,” he told reporters here today.

Earlier, he was present to witness the handing over of duty documents from acting state police chief Datuk Razali Abu Samah to Melaka police chief Datuk Zainol Samah at the Melaka contingent police headquarters here today.

Aidi said police were also committed to stepping up monitoring to ensure crime rates continued to decline under the transition to endemic phase by increasing police presence in hotspots and residential areas.

He said the police’s mobile patrol vehicle team and motorcycle patrol unit will conduct more patrols in residential areas, settlements and business areas, among others.

“The programmes involving the Women Peace Police Squad (AMANITA) as well as the Go-To Safety Point (GTSP) initiative, will also be continued, expanded and intensified at petrol stations throughout the state,” he said.

Meanwhile, Internal Security and Public Order Department director Datuk Hazani Ghazali said police will continue to carry out SOP compliance operations nationwide to ensure people continue to adhere to the SOP issued by the National Security Council (MKN) as well as to safeguard their safety and welfare.

“Individuals who are found to have deliberately violated the rules will be subject to actions under the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases Act 1988 (Act 342) based on the latest SOP dated April 1, 2022, and the Federal Government Gazette dated March 31, 2022,” he said in a statement today.

Malaysia transitioned into endemic phase today with SOP relaxations such as the reopening of the country’s borders, the permission for business premises to operate according to the operating hours stated in their business licence and the permission to perform prayers in mosques and houses of worship without having to observe the physical distancing rule, among others.

Three rates of ‘zakat fitrah’ in Federal Territories, RM7 mandatory rate – Idris

KUALA LUMPUR, April 1 (Bernama) — The Federal Territory Islamic Religious Council (MAIWP) has set three ‘zakat fitrah’ (special obligatory alms) rates for zakat payers in Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya and Labuan for this year, according to Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Idris Ahmad.

Idris said the three rates were RM7, RM14 and RM21.

According to him, the three rates were agreed upon by the Federal Territory Syarie Rules Consultative Committee Meeting with the mandatory zakat fitrah rate this year being RM7.

He said the value of RM7 was based on the price of rice used by the majority of Malaysians.

“Meanwhile, the other two zakat fitrah rates set are RM14 and RM21 respectively, for individuals who can afford it and wish to pay zakat fitrah in multiples according to the type of rice consumed.

“Payment of zakat fitrah in excess of the minimum rate voluntarily, is encouraged, and there is no coercion,” he said in a statement today.

Idris explained that in line with the new norm, the public could make payments online through 14 zakat fitrah payment platforms provided by PPZ-WAIWP, including Gopay, Jompay and the PPZ Portal.

Apart from that, he said this year, MAIWP had also appointed a total of 811 amils (officers) to collect zakat fitrah at payment counters which will be opened at mosques, supermarkets and several other locations.

He said each amil would also be given a QR Code that can be scanned for cashless transactions.
