Decision to proceed with LCS project needs further scrutiny – Hishammuddin

KUALA LUMPUR, April 14 (Bernama) — The decision on whether to proceed with the littoral combat ship (LCS) project or otherwise will be based on further scrutiny, Senior Defence Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein said.

Hishammuddin said the implementation of the project to build our own LCS’ was no mean feat but was of the view, however, that it should continue.

“I would like to inform that the decision to continue this LCS project has the support of all parties, including the opposition, and the decision to continue it (LCS) was also made by my predecessors before I brought up this matter.

“I can frankly say that the Cabinet’s agreement to proceed with the LCS requires details from us and this matter has been raised with the Cabinet three times,” he told reporters when asked to comment on the development of the LCS project after handing out Malaysian Armed Forces (ATM) Aidilfitri contributions at the Defence Ministry here today.

Hishammuddin said a Cabinet Committee, chaired by Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Economic Affairs) Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed, has been set up to finalise a decision on the matter.

“He (Mustapa) himself will present the plans to the Cabinet and the committee has already met thrice during which they (committee members) had also gone to Lumut, Perak to inspect existing assets for the continuation of the LCS project.

“I hope this ministerial committee has met and completed and we hope it can be presented to the Cabinet to get a final decision on the direction of the LCS,” he said.

In January, the MACC detained two chief executive officers after finding new leads in its investigation into the procurement of the six littoral combat ships by Boustead Naval Shipyard Sdn Bhd (BNS).

Both of them were arrested on suspicion of misappropriation and corruption through payments made to three companies overseas.

Meanwhile, Hishammuddin said four Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) littoral mission ships (LMS) have been received and commissioned.

He said the Defence Ministry has begun serious plans for the procurement of the second batch of LMS and it will start with three LMS to be equipped with more sophisticated weapon systems.

Hishammuddin said six MD-530G helicopters for the use of the Army arrived safely in the country on Feb 21 and are in the process of the final acceptance test.

Federal government special grant increment will boost ‘Hala Tuju Sabah Maju Jaya’ agenda – Hajiji

KOTA KINABALU, April 14 (Bernama) — The sharp increase in the Federal Government Special Grant for Sabah will help push the Hala Tuju Sabah Maju Jaya agenda in developing the state for the people, said Chief Minister Datuk Hajiji Noor.

In welcoming the increment, he said it shows that the federal government is prepared to listen to the state.

“It is a very good development for Sabah. The fourfold increment from RM26.7 million to RM125.6 million beginning this year will really benefit Sabah.

“However, negotiations are still ongoing to get the 40 per cent (revenue claim) as per agreed in the 1963 Malaysia Agreement,” he said in a statement here today.

Earlier, Hajiji attended a meeting on the 1963 Malaysia Agreement chaired by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob via video conferencing, which was also attended by the Premier of Sarawak, Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

Ismail Sabri and Hajiji, in a joint statement today, said the new special grant for Sabah has been increased by 4.7 times from RM26.7 million to RM125.6 million for 2022.

Seniors with comorbidities given option of second booster dose – Khairy

KUALA LUMPUR, April 14 (Bernama) — Individuals aged 60 and above with high-risk comorbidities are now given the option of getting a second booster dose of the vaccine, with an interval of at least four to six months after the date of the first booster dose.

Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin said the decision was made after a scientific study and a Malaysian cohort study by the Technical Working Group (TWG) panel, which found that individuals aged 60 and above with higher-risk comorbidities had serious symptoms and death due to COVID-19.

“Currently, the Comirnaty mRNA vaccine (Pfizer-BioNTech) is the recommended vaccine for a second booster dose, based on available scientific data,” he told a press conference in Parliament building here today.

Khairy said for individuals aged 60 and above who have received a booster dose and tested positive for COVID-19, they were eligible to receive a second booster dose three months after they fully recovered.

For individuals aged 60 and above who are healthy and do not have high-risk comorbidities, he said they should talk to a medical practitioner about whether a second booster dose would be recommended for them.

In addition, Khairy said teenagers aged 12 and above with a weak immune system (moderate or severe immunocompromised) were also given the option to get a booster dose, with an interval of at least 28 days after the date of the second dose.

However, the health minister said that the implementation of the latest recommendation would not affect the complete vaccination status of high-risk individuals who did not take the second booster dose.

He said the MOH was currently updating the clinical guidelines, which would detail the implementation, and had received applications for individuals wishing to go abroad to obtain a second booster dose to meet the requirements of foreign countries.

“For example, there are some countries in continental Europe that do not recognise Sinovac and Sinopharm vaccines as primary doses and booster doses.

“Therefore, individuals who want to go abroad can be given a second booster dose, after an interval of at least one month from the first booster dose, to meet the requirements of going abroad,” he said, adding that the MOH has 5.7 million doses of Pfizer vaccine to meet the need for booster dose injections.

As of March 31, 2022, Khairy said a total of 701 individuals had received digital certificates of vaccination exemption for medical reasons, hence, such individuals would also get booster dose exemption automatically.

He said for individuals who are not eligible for the booster dose due to medical reasons, they were required to make a new application by obtaining the confirmation of a physician, and then making an application at the district health office (PKD) nearby by submitting a ‘Slip of Suitability Assessment to Receive COVID-19 Vaccine for Patients with Certain Health Problems’.

In the meantime, Khairy said effective April 22, close contacts without symptoms do not need to undergo house surveillance and observation order (HSO), while close contacts with symptoms are advised to conduct self-quarantine.
