Govt will continue providing haj subsidy – Idris

PUTRAJAYA, April 8 (Bernama) — The government will continue providing the subsidy for performing the haj pilgrimage this year, said Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Idris Ahmad.

The minister, when giving the assurance, however said the government had yet to decide on the amount of subsidy to be given to haj pilgrims.

Idris said he would discuss with Lembaga Tabung Haji (TH) on the cost of performing the pilgrimage for Muassasah haj pilgrims before presenting it to the Cabinet that would make the final decision on the matter.

“We will give the subsidy, insyaAllah. I cannot announce the amount yet as it is still under embargo,” he told the media after the Federal Territory Hospital Welfare Fund contribution presentation ceremony, here today.

Yesterday, TH, in a statement said that the cost of performing haj for Muassasah pilgrims this year was expected to increase to more than RM25,000 per person following the hike in taxes and new service charges imposed by the Saudi Arabian government.

It said the cost was due to a 12 per cent increase in cost for Muassasah pilgrims compared with RM22,900 in 2019, taking into account the hike in Value-added Tax (VAT) from five per cent to 15 per cent and some additional service charges.

TH has maintained the haj payment rate of RM9,980 for the past 13 years even though the cost of performing the pilgrimage has increased every year.

At today’s ceremony, Idris on behalf of the Federal Territory Islamic Religious Council (MAIWP) presented cash contributions totalling RM1.03 million to 12 hospitals and medical centres in the three federal territories of Kuala Lumpur, Labuan and Putrajaya.

The recipients were Hospital Canselor Tunku Muhriz, National Heart Institute Foundation, Kuala Lumpur Hospital, Putrajaya Hospital, Universiti Malaya Medical Centre, Labuan Hospital, National Cancer Council, Tunku Azizah Hospital, Tuanku Mizan Armed Forces Hospital, National Cancer Institute, Cheras Rehabilitation Hospital and Malaysian Medical Welfare Fund.

Idris hoped that the contributions would be used by the hospitals and health institutions to help less fortunate patients get necessary treatment at their facilities.

Bombardier, B200T aircraft dispatched to boost search efforts for missing divers

MERSING, April 8 (Bernama) — The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) has dispatched a Bombardier CL 415 MP aircraft to boost the search and rescue (SAR) operation to locate the remaining three foreign divers who went missing in the waters of Pulau Tokong Sanggol, near here, on Wednesday.

This is the first time the agency is using the aircraft, which display excellent low altitude maneuverability and loiter time capabilities, for SAR operation in Johor.

Johor MMEA director First Admiral Nurul Hizam Zakaria said apart from the Bombardier and two helicopters from MMEA and Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) deployed yesterday, MMEA also received assistance from the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) through its B200T aircraft.

“It’s been three days since the victims went missing. However, we will not give up and we hope all of them will be rescued.

“With the deployment of these aircraft, suitable for long-range operation, the possibility of finding the victims is higher,” he told a press conference at the search and rescue operation forward base at the Mersing District Council Public Jetty here today.

Apart from that, Nurul Hizam said these aircraft, taking part in a search area of 739.64 nautical miles, would also be looking out for emergency signals from the divers if they were drifted towards any nine small islands located around the south of Pulau Tokong Sanggol.

Today’s operation which started as early as 3 am also involves 11 boats from multiple agencies and 10 jet skis belonging to the public covering 335.79 nautical miles for the search at sea.

The operation will be focusing on finding three victims which include father and son, Adrian Peter Chesters, 46, (British national) and Nathen Renze Chesters, 14, (Dutch national) as well as 18-year-old French national, Alexia Alexandra Molina.

Yesterday, Norwegian dive master Kristine Grodem, 36, was found floating, complete with her diving suit and equipment, by a tugboat en route from Indonesia to Thailand at 8.15 am in the waters off Tanjung Sedili in Kota Tinggi, about 30 nautical miles from where she was last reported seen.

Selangor scraps entertainment tax this year

SHAH ALAM, April 8 (Bernama) — The Selangor government has agreed to a one-year entertainment duty exemption for the entrance fees (tickets) for stage performances by local artistes effective Jan 1 to Dec 31, 2022.

Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari said the exemption was given following views and feedback from the public, especially those in the industry on the imposition of entertainment tax which had become a concern recently.

“However, the exemption will not apply to foreign artistes,” he said in a statement today.

Amirudin said for now, an entertainment tax would not be imposed on buskers. The entertainment duty exemption will also apply to live band performances (tickets) from Jan 1 to Dec 31, 2022.

Meanwhile, Amirudin said the state government had instructed the Selangor Land and Mines Office and the Selangor Forestry Department to regazette the Kuala Langat Utara forest reserve immediately.

“This area involves Kampung Orang Asli Busut Baru, covering an area of 42.05 hectares (ha), and the alignment of the Sungai Rasau Water Treatment Plant pipeline which covers an area of 8.58 ha,” he added.
