AKM: Excited parents help eager children build robots at MOSTI kiosk

KANGAR, March 27 (Bernama) — Parents were excited as their children when they helped them to build solar-powered robots at the kiosk set up by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI) at the Tuanku Syed Putra Sports Complex here.

The kiosk was set up in conjunction with the three-day 2022 Perlis Keluarga Malaysia (Malaysian Family) Aspiration (AKM) Tour Programme from March 25.

One visitor, Ahmad Danial Nordin, 42, said he made use of the weekend holiday to take his two children Ahmad Mirza, 14, and Farisah Alia, 10, to experience for themselves how to build a robot.

“I can see that Abang Long (Mirza) and kakak (Alia) were quite good at building a robot. Maybe, it is because they are used to assembling Lego pieces prior to this.

“I only observe and help read the instructions to them,” he said when met by Bernama today.

The public servant praised the programme because it could foster an interest in science and technology in children.

Meanwhile, MOSTI Strategic Planning Division secretary, Ruziah Shafie said building robots was one of the activities which had succeeded in luring the public to MOSTI’s kiosk.

“The objective of the programme is to impart knowledge to the public concerning science and technology so that all levels of society can understand them,” she said.

MOSTI has received 950 visitors since the programme started on Friday and this was expected to go up to 1,200 people before the kiosk closes this evening, she added.

No physical distancing for congregational prayers in Kedah beginning April 1

ALOR SETAR, March 27 — Prayers in congregation are allowed at all mosques and surau in Kedah, without having to maintain a physical distance, beginning April 1, said State Islamic Religious Affairs Department (JHEAIK) director Datuk Mohd Yusri Md Daud.

He said the permission was granted in line with the transition to the endemic phase and this would take effect statewide as Kedah Sultan, Sultan Sallehuddin Sultan Badlishah has consented to the date.

“However, physical distancing is still mandatory for other mosque activities. The standard operating procedures in maintaining a physical distance of at least one metre must continue to be observed when sermons, talks, lectures and classes are being conducted in mosques or surau,” he said in a statement here today.

“The serving of food, gotong-royong and feasts are allowed but pre-packed food are encouraged. Though Quran citations and offer of prayers are allowed, the sessions must be kept brief with physical distancing maintained at all times.

He said when holding religious activities in mosques and surau during the month of Ramadan, the same SOPs must be adhered to, adding that congregational prayers for Tarawih, Tahajud, Witr and other optional prayers can be performed without physical distancing and the number allowed would depend on the capacity of the mosques or surau.

He said worshippers are still required to wear a face mask, register their attendance using the MySejahtera application, bring their own prayer mats and only those fully-vaccinated are allowed into the premises.

“They are not allowed to gather, sleep or have physical contact or shake hands with one another after performing their prayers,” he added.

Meanwhile in MELAKA, Chief Minister Datuk Seri Sulaiman Md Ali said beginning April 1, the physical distancing requirement for congregational prayers all mosques and surau in the state would be according to the size of the prayer mat.

Physical distancing is still maintained but the rows are much closer than the earlier one-metre requirement,” he told reporters when met at Bukit Senjuang here today.

Melaka had earlier left it to the respective mosque management to use their discretion in allowing congregational prayers as the state has over 313 mosques which were sufficient despite following the physical distancing rule.

Artecationista: Experimenting with visual arts using pointillism technique

KUALA LUMPUR, March 27 (Bernama) — Taking on something new, especially an endeavour that is different from one’s field of work that one has been involved in for decades, takes a tremendous amount of courage.

Mimi Salleh, Norsa’adah Ahmad, Haryanti (Yan) Yahaya, and Zalila Isa, who have each established themselves in the field of writing and the country’s book industry, portrayed this bravery when they decided to venture into the field of visual art.

Guided by the country’s accomplished artist with extensive experience in fine art and book illustration, Emila Yusof, the four women poured in hours of effort into producing masterpieces using the pointillism technique starting last year.

Pointillism refers to a painting technique using tiny dots of various colours to create objects as desired by the artists.

Emila, 53, herself began to delve into the technique after being inspired by the artworks of French painter, Paul Signac, which were on display at the Albertina Museum while visiting Vienna in 2019.

When met recently, Emila said, under the Artecationista brand name, over 50 of their artworks would be displayed at the 2022 Nature Pointillism Exhibition from April 1-22 at GMBB, a creative community mall in Bukit Bintang here to be hosted by the Museum of Picture Book Art, Malaysia.

Norsa’adah, 43, who is a co-owner of an indie book publishing company, said initially she had doubts about her ability in painting, but with Emila’s guidance and encouragement from the other three women, she finally discovered the joy in painting using the pointillism technique, which had also helped her realise her potential.

Sharing similar views, Mimi, 48, who has created a name for herself as an author of picture books for children and articles on arts, said this latest venture helped her to see things from a wider perspective, adding that her confidence soared when she managed to finish each painting using the technique.

“(Producing paintings) using this technique helped me to learn to be patient because to complete the layers of colours takes time, sometimes days, but I feel satisfied when I saw the results,” said Yan, 43, who started her career as an engineer before becoming a translator.

Zalila, 44, who is an editor, said the opportunity to collaborate with her favourite Malaysian artist, Emila, should not be missed, adding that she began to spend time to learn more about the technique with Emila’s guidance.

“Drawing is not just recording what you see and think in the form of paintings, as it also changes my perception of nature (especially). Now I look at the tree, its leaves and twigs, the various hues of greens more closely,” she said.

When asked about what she hoped to achieve through the exhibition, Emila said: “To give the idea to people that anybody without any art background can make art if they put their heart and mind into it.

“And that with daily practice, they can create their masterpieces that they never thought they could.”

Tourism industry to require larger workforce with border reopening – Rafidah

KUALA LUMPUR, March 27 (Bernama) — The reopening of Malaysia’s international borders will benefit the tourism industry; hence the need for more human resources, including new graduates, related to the industry, said AirAsia X Bhd chairman Tan Sri Rafidah Aziz.

The former international trade and industry minister also called for clear standard operating procedures (SOPs) to be implemented as well as a strict SOP compliance once the international borders are fully opened next month.

She stressed the need for standardised SOPs to be implemented nationwide.

“To ensure an environment that encourages incoming and outbound flights, let’s adhere to the SOPs as other countries impose stringent SOPs. Foreign tourists who enter our country must also follow our SOPs,” she told reporters after the maiden graduation ceremony of the Halim Mazmin Group’s education arm Meritus University, Meritus College and HM Aerospace (flight training academy) here today.

Rafidah is the chancellor of Meritus University.

Meritus University founder Tan Sri Dr Halim Mohammad, who was also present, said he set up an education division within the Halim Mazmin Group with the aim of continuously producing skilled workers for the maritime, hospitality and aviation sectors.

He noted that the Malaysia Shipping Master Plan 2017-2022 targeted about 160,000 job opportunities.

“In Malaysia alone, there are huge job opportunities offered by the global maritime industry for graduates in maritime studies. Those with good maritime qualifications are highly sought-after in the maritime ecosystem,” said Halim, adding that the university’s graduates had been fully employed by the industries.
