Jalan Ampang-Jelapang repair work over in three months – Exco

IPOH, Jan 7 — Repair works on the Jalan Ampang-Jelapang road here that was partially closed since October last year due to a massive sinkhole is expected to be completed in three months.

State Public Infrastructure, Energy, Water and Public Transport chairman Datuk Mohd Zolkafly Harun said the new contractor appointed will first identify issues plaguing the federal road.

“Among the reasons for the delay is that the state government had to look for a suitable contractor with the expertise on slope and ‘crossing carbon leaking’ work in the area.

He said the repair work was extremely technical and must be carefully done.

Only one lane of the road can now be used as a result of the sinkhole incident, which is believed to have been caused by soil erosion due to water seepage along broken side drains.

The delay in the repair work has caused dissatisfaction among road users as they have had to endure daily traffic congestion.

Don’t be stubborn, Hamzah warns Rohingyas

HULU LANGAT, Jan 7 — Rohingya nationals who are United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) cardholders have been reminded not to be stubborn in whatever they do and understand their situation is that of a refugee.

Home Minister Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin said the government sympathised with the situation faced by the group but any actions that caused problems to the country would be dealt with.

He said they held UNHCR cards and should not view Malaysia as a ‘cemetery’ country.

“We only help on humanitarian grounds but don’t become big-headed as I do not like anyone to think they are above our laws.

“We do not want any other problems to arise, like the incident at a traffic light in Kuala Lumpur where members of the public were insulted and this shouldn’t be happening in our country,” he told reporters during the MEKAR Prihatin post-flood programme in Taman Sri Nanding near here today.

He said this when asked to comment on the action of Rohingya children found begging and acting aggressively towards motorists around Cheras as had gone viral on social media recently.

Meanwhile, Hamzah said his ministry would hold talks with all airline companies regarding the entry of foreign travellers infected with the Omicron variant, besides not having any COVID-19 vaccination record.

“It happens where before any individual receives a clearance pass from the airline company, all details regarding their vaccination record must be presented and checked properly while the Immigration Department will then receive it before granting clearance for travelling.

“However, if the clearance pass had been submitted to the Immigration without knowing if they have been fully vaccinated or not, are we going to withdraw it and not allow them to board the flight because how are they going to claim compensation?,” he said.

In the meantime, Hamzah said his ministry had taken note of the police report lodged against Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chairman Tan Sri Azam Baki today.

“We just received the report but we will investigate according to certain acts,” he said.

On Wednesday, Azam denied allegations that he had control over many companies, including conglomerates, describing it as a malicious allegation.

Azam was also reported to have said that it was all a big lie to create a negative perception against him.

Govt looking for mechanism to tackle price hike for chicken, eggs

JASIN, Jan 7 — Prices for fresh chicken and chicken eggs may go up after the Malaysian Family Maximum Price Control Scheme ends on Feb 4, but the government will find a mechanism to tackle it in the interest of all parties.

Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi said the government would review the ceiling price for chickens to ensure the welfare of consumers and breeders are taken care of.

He said an engagement session between both parties and various relevant agencies including the Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industries (MAFI) and farmers’ association was held yesterday.

According to the farmers, he said the hike in livestock prices and operating costs was due to the soaring price of imported chicken feed.

“Consumers should also understand about this problem because it is quite complicated. It is not easy to keep the prices low because then farmers cannot provide the supplies,” he said.

He told reporters this after handing over flood relief assistance to victims housed at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Sungai Rambai here today.

Nanta said the retail chicken price was set at RM9.10 per kilogramme until Feb 4 under the price control scheme but this move received complaints from farmers due to the costs they have to incur as well as the duration which they said was too long.

He said the ministry would cooperate with MAFI to look for the best mechanism to check prices at the retail and wholesale levels.

“The ceiling price may be high but we will see first because we have other strategies such as MAFI importing chickens. If that happens, the prices should not go up because of the competition,” he said.

Bumiputera entrepreneurs need to be more proactive, progressive in business skills – Abdul Latiff

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 7 — Bumiputera entrepreneurs need to be more proactive and progressive in increasing their business skills in the respective industries, said Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Special Functions) Datuk Dr Abdul Latiff Ahmad.

He said Malaysia needs more Bumiputera startups to enhance national development and for that, the Bumiputera Agenda Steering Unit (TERAJU) played an important role as the main coordinator of the Bumiputera socioeconomy and economic agenda with a high trajectory through the Bumiputera Entrepreneur Start-up Scheme (SUPERB).

“On a global scale, startup value reached US$3 trillion (US$1= RM4.21), compatible with the gross domestic product (GDP) of the group of seven countries (G7).

“Furthermore, Malaysia scored 10 in terms of performance and market reach in the Global Start-Up Ecosystem Report 2020 (GSER 2020),” he said during the online SUPERB 2021 winners recognition ceremony today.

He believed that this programme can unravel talent as well as build the capacity of Bumiputera entrepreneurs to compete on the global stage.

During the ceremony, 25 SUPERB 2021 winners from Sabah, Terengganu, Pahang, Johor, Penang, Selangor and Kuala Lumpur were announced.

Winners have been selected from 60 finalists at the final stage based on innovation potential, commercialisation, resilience, global competitiveness through several screening processes, intensive accelerator training, as well as pitching sessions with industrial renowned juries since September last year.

According to TERAJU, more than 62 per cent of the products and services from 208 SUPERB entrepreneurs have been successfully commercialised in the local and international markets since the programme was launched in 2014.

Abdul Latiff said a Keluarga Teraju network would be established with all SUPERB entrepreneurs to facilitate business and partnership ventures.

TERAJU chief executive officer Md Silmi Abd Rahman said a total of 19 SUPERB 2021 winners have won funds of up to RM500,000 for the commercialisation stage while four winners at the idea creation stage have garnered funds up to RM100,000 with a total allocation of RM11.5 million.

“TERAJU will follow their progress as what we had done with 208 SUPERB winners before so that we can always provide support and networking opportunities through existing programmes and partnership,” he said.

He added that it also supports the direction of the Bumiputera Development Action 2030 (TPB2030), the essence of the Shared Prosperity Vision 2030 (SPV2030) and the main focus of the 12th Malaysia Plan.
