Perak detects second Omicron case, involving umrah pilgrim

IPOH, Dec 28 — Perak has detected the second case of the Omicron COVID-19 variant in the state, involving an individual who returned home after performing the umrah pilgrimage.

State Health, Science, Environment and Green Technology Committee chairman Mohd Akmal Kamarudin said the individual tested positive while undergoing quarantine at home.

“The case is under control. The screening test on close contacts turned out to be negative. However, further observation and monitoring will still be done,” he told reporters after closing the state-level National Environment Day celebration today.

On Dec 3, Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin announced the first case of the Omicron variant involving a female student who arrived from South Africa. She was confirmed positive for the variant of concern on Dec 2.

Meanwhile, Mohd Akmal urged umrah pilgrims to comply with the seven-day quarantine order to prevent the risk of COVID-19 transmission.

“The government allows them to undergo quarantine at home to save cost. So, please comply (with the requirement). However, there were reports that some of them were receiving guests at home and some even spend time with their families.

“Please isolate yourself at home, we are worried that it (COVID-19) will spread,” he said, adding that umrah pilgrims who tested positive for the Omicron variant will be given a digital tracking wristband.

Two Penang food processing factories ordered shut

BALIK PULAU, Dec 28 — Two premises – a shrimp paste processing factory and a soy sauce factory – were ordered to close for two weeks due to unhygienic conditions and non-compliance with food safety and quality standards during an operation conducted by the Penang Health Department.

The department’s Food Safety and Quality Division (BKKM) Environmental Health officer, Mohd Wazir Khalid said that the two factories were issued four compounds totaling RM10,000.

He said the raid on the shrimp paste processing factory in Pantai Acheh, at 10 am today found the premise, which has been operating for over 50 years, kept a stock of old shrimp paste filled with maggots in the same container as the freshly produced paste.

“Checks also revealed that some of the shrimp paste, which was supposed to expire in 2024, had already gone bad and kept to be sold to their suppliers. The factory was also caught using a fake halal logo.

“The factory was raided in 2019 for the same offence but still failed to maintain cleanliness,” he said in a press conference here today.

Meanwhile, during checks at a soy sauce processing factory at Jalan Batu Maung here, health officers also found rat droppings on the floor, as well as cobwebs inside the soybean fermentation containers.

“The factory owner was instructed to carry out cleaning and pest control with an accredited company,” he said, adding 14-day closure notice orders were issued under Section 11 of the Food Act 1983 for the two premises effective today.

KLANG, Dec 28 — A total of 200 workers of the Solid Waste Management and Public Cleansing Corporation (SWCorp) under the Ministry of Housing and Local Government (KPKT) have been mobilised to assist in the post-flood cleaning operations in Selangor.

SWCorp Enforcement and Regulatory Division director Zaidi Tuah said 130 units of machinery under its concession companies, namely Alam Flora Sdn Bhd; South Waste Management Sdn Bhd and Environment Idaman Sdn Bhd were deployed to flood-hit areas in the state.

Zaidi, who is also SWCorp’s Head of Post-Flood Operations, said entering the seventh day, about 1,000 tonnes of waste was collected, especially in the districts of Hulu Langat, Sepang, Kuala Langat and Klang.

“This will not be possible without the help of the residents who had placed the rubbish in an orderly manner to be easily accessible by excavators and rubbish trucks,” he told Bernama and RTM when met at Taman Cempaka Sari Phase 3 here today.

Zaidi also advised residents affected by floods to separate domestic and bulky rubbish to facilitate clean up.

The area coordinator for the SWCorp’s clean-up ops, Mohd Najib Abd Razak, 36, said the operation had been carried out since last week, involving Phase One and Phase Two of the residential area.

“Since Dec 19, together with KPKT we have been helping to rescue flood victims and cleaning their houses, especially the elderly,” he said.

Meanwhile, in Kuantan, state SWCorp director Sharudin Hamid said the company has transported a total of 6,785 tonnes of flood-related waste to landfills from Dec 22 until yesterday excluding waste placed at 14 transit sites waiting to be collected.

He said the company is actively carrying clean-up works in badly-hit districts especially Kuantan, Temerloh and Bentong.

“Our focus now is to speed up the process of removing rubbish from the houses of the affected residents and transporting it to the transit sites. In addition, the number of lorries will be increased to carry the rubbish to the landfills,” he said when met by reporters at the transit site in Bukit Rangin Perdana, here today.

Apart from Alam Flora, various agencies including local leaders had taken the initiative to provide lorries to assist in transporting waste to the transit sites, he added.

JAIS opens collection centres for Quran, Religious books damaged by floods

SHAH ALAM, Dec 28 — The Selangor Islamic Religious Department (JAIS) has opened collection centres for copies of al-Quran and religious books damaged by floods at six locations in the state from yesterday to Thursday.

Its director Datuk Mohd Shahzihan Ahmad said the six centres were located at the Sungai Serai Muslim cemetery (Hulu Langat), Johan Setia Muslim cemetery (Klang), Masjid Al-Madaniah USJ 18, Subang Jaya (Petaling), Masjid As-Solihin Kancong Darat (Kuala Langat), Kompleks Islam Daerah Kuala Selangor (Kuala Selangor) and Masjid Raja Haji Fi Sabilillah, Cyberjaya (Sepang).

“The floods that hit Selangor resulted in the damage and destruction of properties including the al Quran and religious books in mosques, suraus, schools and private homes.

“JAIS has taken steps to preserve the sanctity of the verses of the Quran,” he said in a statement today.

Mohd Shahzihan also advised Muslims in flood-hit areas to send the damaged al-Quran and religious books to the nearest kariah mosque.

“The mosque management must make sure that all copies sent to them be placed in an appropriate room, safe and clean, away from human or animal paths to avoid being stepped over and trampled as well as placed at an elevated level.

“If the Quran and religious books are stored in an open area, the mosque must ensure that they are covered with plastic sheets or canvas to avoid them from getting wet due to the rain,” he said.

In a separate statement, Mohd Shahzihan said flood victims could request for replacement of their missing or damaged documents issued by JAIS related to marriages, divorces or reconciliations for free.

He said they could come to the district religious office from today until Jan 31, 2022.
