Women recognised as pillar in Sarawak’s administration, economy

In Sarawak, women’s ‘power’ is one of the most important factors that keep the state’s administrative system on track and functioning sustainably, besides helping to drive local economic growth.

In an effort to strengthen the role of women in the administration and economy of Sarawak, the group continues to be given equal priority, space and opportunity to mobilise energy to develop the state, said Sarawak Minister of Welfare, Community Wellbeing, Women, Family and Childhood Development Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah.

Based on the principle of ‘women in decision making’, she said the state government had carried out several special programmes, one of which was the Women Leadership Training Programme (WLTP) to produce competent women leaders at all levels of administration.

Speaking to Bernama, Fatimah explained that the WLTP initiative implemented under the Women and Family Department brings together selected women leaders from all over Sarawak to be given exposure, skills and training in shaping their charisma and leadership values.

“Alhamdulillah, this programme has succeeded in producing quality leaders. Participants showed excellent development, they appeared more confident in front of the community to speak out and spark ideas.

“What’s more gratifying is that some of the participants have become council members (local authorities), and even hold important positions in political parties. This is our long-term plan to produce women leaders at various levels,” she said.

In shaping the personality of leaders, Sarawak women are also encouraged to venture into the field of volunteerism through community activities under this initiative which was started in 2019.

The role of women continues to be recognised when the Women’s Bureau which takes care of their affairs was upgraded to a full department, namely the Sarawak Women and Family Department since 2015.

The minister said the economic sector, especially small and medium industries (SMIs), saw women’s participation, including those from rural and interior areas of Sarawak.

Fatimah said most Sarawak women entrepreneurs already had the skills to produce SMI products, but faced financial constraints as well as skills in marketing their products.

“Through the assistance of the Sarawak government, we provide the #usahawanjwks grant as a revolving fund or to purchase business equipment for women entrepreneurs, which to date has benefitted more than 300 women entrepreneurs.

“More proudly, the number of women entrepreneurs who managed to increase business income after receiving the grant is so large,” she said, adding that there are women entrepreneurs who successfully market their products internationally.

According to Fatimah, the current of technological modernisation also has a positive impact on women entrepreneurs who are ready to face the evolution of digital economic, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic.“

“The business pattern of women entrepreneurs is changing. This digitalisation allows them to provide products and sell them based on demand, thus reducing the problems of unsold goods and wastage of resources. This new method increases their sales productivity as well as offers more advertising and promotion space,” she said.

However, Fatimah said she recognised that internet access was an issue faced by women entrepreneurs especially in the interiors.

“Therefore, the state and federal governments are actively implementing the construction of more telecommunication towers so that the digital economy of women entrepreneurs in Sarawak continues to develop,” she added.

Sabah mulls reducing quarantine period for individuals from abroad

The Sabah government will consider reducing the compulsory quarantine period for individuals from abroad entering via the international checkpoints in the state.

Sabah Local Government and Housing Minister, Datuk Masidi Manjun, who is also state COVID-19 spokesman, said it would be applicable to citizens and non-citizens who arrived in Sabah from abroad.

Detailing on the matter, Masidi said fully vaccinated individuals could be considered to undergo seven days of compulsory quarantine while those who are not vaccinated or have incomplete vaccination must undergo 10 days of quarantine.

Need for G2G agreement, wider market for local films – Annuar

— There is a need for government-to-government (G2G) agreement and understanding to ensure that a wider market can be opened for the country’s film industry, Communications and Multimedia Minister Tan Sri Annuar Musa said.

He said this is also to enable the films and products of the industry to penetrate the markets in other countries.

“Foreign films, such as from China and the Philippines can enter our country quite easily, but that is not the case for our films. We can hardly enter the markets in our neighbouring countries. So yes, there is a need for G2G agreement and understanding.

“We should determine the forms and framework for this agreement first, but there should not be anything that stops the local film producers to have partners or co-producers from other countries. We will support this kind of cooperation.”

Annuar said this at the presentation of Letters of Acceptance for RTM TV Programmes here today, which was attended by over 200 representatives of production companies.

Meanwhile, the minister said the standard operating procedures (SOPs) for the national creative industry need to be reviewed so as to facilitate the current situation in the country which is heading towards the endemic phase of COVID-19.

“The government has spent almost RM5 billion and almost everyone in the country has been vaccinated against COVID-10, we have to go back to our normal life, we cannot continue putting restrictions (to production companies) to the extent of causing bankruptcy. We need to start out normal routines, we need the SOPs, but they have to be reviewed,” he said.

In his speech earlier, Annuar said he wants to see the contents of RTM programmes to not just reflect high-quality productions, but also support the policies of the government of the day.

As such, he said RTM should be more creative in promoting its contents, either on social media or through a trailer.

“Most importantly, the programmes are being watched and liked by many. Don’t take the programmes for granted and broadcast them just because they are ready and all paid for. That’s not good enough.

“Each programme is an investment for RTM. RTM must not take it for granted, we have to compete, have to see it as a product that we need to market and promote,” he added.

“WTM continues to be an important platform for us (Tourism Malaysia ) to promote Malaysia’s extensive tourism offering and to introduce new and upcoming tourist attractions that we believe appeal to the European market,” he said.

The High Commissioner-designate of Malaysia to the United Kingdom, Zakri Jaafar, said through this event, Malaysia looks forward to restoring confidence among international travel agencies to promote and sell the country’s tourist attractions.

Let people form own judgement on those who reject cooperation – Mohamed Azmin

Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali wants the people to form their own judgement on those who rejected any form of cooperation with Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) in the Melaka state election on Nov 20.

Mohamed Azmin, who is a member of Bersatu Supreme Council and Perikatan Nasional (PN) election director, said the coalition initiated the cooperation for the sake of the people and the interests of the state.

“That is their choice (refusing to negotiate with Bersatu). Let the people make their own judgment on the attitude and statements of those who refused to cooperate,” he said when met at the Gombak parliamentary constituency’s Deepavali 2021 get-together, here tonight.

Today, several UMNO divisions in Melaka ruled out any form of cooperation between Umno and Bersatu in the upcoming state election.

Tangga Batu UMNO division chief Datuk Seri Mohamad Ali Mohamad, who represented the group, said the decision was made to respect the wishes of the grassroots in addition to other factors that made the cooperation impossible.

Mohamed Azmin, who is also PN’s information chief said the coalition is always ready to negotiate cooperation, especially with the parties that formed the federal government.

However, he stressed that time was not on their side, thus preparations must be made at the grassroots level, especially involving seat distribution, candidates and the election machinery.

“This matter needs to be streamlined as soon as possible so that our machinery can act more effectively and efficiently and our actions do not cause the people to be confused about the direction, future of the country and the state,” he said.

He said the cooperation formed last year through the PN coalition had resulted in many successes for the country in the face of health and economic crises, adding that the cooperation should be continued in the Melaka state election.

The EC set has the nomination date for the Melaka state election on Nov 8, followed by early voting on Nov 16 and polling date on Nov 20.

The election is being held following the dissolution of the Melaka State Assembly on Oct 4, when four state assemblymen withdrew their support for Chief Minister Datuk Seri Sulaiman Md Ali.
