Muhyiddin to ensure Johor Assembly meeting focuses on COVID, rakyat issues

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 12 — Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin is ready to take on the responsibility of ensuring that the Johor Legislative Assembly meeting focuses on issues that address COVID-19 and the state’s economic recovery, rather than politics or matters of self-interest.

Muhyiddin, in a Facebook posting today, said as a member of the Johor legislative assembly and within the capacity he has, he will ensure Sultan of Johor Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar’s advice is given priority and acted upon.

“I will ensure Tuanku’s advice is given priority and acted upon especially on efforts taken to contain COVID-19 (pandemic) and on Johor’s and the country’s economic recovery.

“His Highness’ guidance and advice will be a guide for me to carry out my responsibilities as an elected representative,” Muhyiddin, who is also Gambir assemblyman, said.

As a leader, Muhyiddin said he and the rest of the assemblymen are responsible for sincerely helping the people to the best of their abilities and winning the COVID-19 battle together.

Muhyiddin earlier was granted an audience by Sultan Ibrahim at Istana Pasir Pelangi, Johor Bahru to present developments on current national issues before His Highness invited the Prime Minister to lunch, over which Muhyiddin expressed his thanks and appreciation.

Earlier, when opening the fourth session of the 14th State Assembly sitting in Kota Iskandar, Iskandar Puteri, Sultan Ibrahim raised concerns over the increase in COVID-19 cases.

This is following the spread of new variants that are more aggressive and contagious.

Sultan Ibrahim also ordered State Assembly Speaker Suhaizan Kaiat to immediately postpone the meeting if health assessments found that there was a risk or threat from the pandemic.

The State Assembly sitting was then adjourned to Aug 22 to make way for Covid-19 risk assessment.

Dine-in: One staff must stand-by to check diners’ vaccination status – Labuan MKN

— The Labuan National Security Council (MKN) has urged food and beverage (F&B) operators on the duty-free-island to assign at least one staff to check on each customer’s COVID-19 vaccination status before welcoming them to dine in.

Its director Mohd Hafiez Daud said a thorough check by the food premises’ staff on the diner’s vaccination status would lead to the effectiveness of the dine-in rules for fully vaccinated.

“We believe all the eateries in this island are gearing up to check diners’ vaccination status, before they can welcome them to dine in, as these operators are fully aware if they ignore the dine-in fully vaccinated rules…their business operations could be at stake of COVID-19 infections and temporary business closure.

“The F&B operators have the rights not to allow any individual who had not given cooperation and fail to show the COVID-19 digital vaccine certificates upon request (to dine in),” he told a press conference after conducting spot checks on the new rules at food premises here today.

He said an engagement session was held last Friday with Labuan business chambers as well as food and beverage operators on the importance of the dine-in fully vaccinated rules in business premises.

Mohd Hafiez said the close cooperation from the people is crucial in ensuring Labuan continues to enjoy flexibility and relaxation of movement restrictions.

“We have consumed a long time to get Labuan to achieve herd immunity and moved into Phase Three of the National Recovery Plan (PPN).

“We must not let Labuan return to the difficult times with uncontrollable positive cases and emergence of new clusters, therefore, people must be together with the COVID-19 frontliners to address this pandemic which is still far from over,” he said.

Mohd Hafiez also advised F&B staff (assigned to check diner’s vaccination status) who found diner showing fake printed digital vaccination certificates to lodge police report immediately.

“The printed version of the digital certificate is an initiative of an individual and not encouraged by the government,” he said, adding that the COVID-19 vaccination appointment card which stated full vaccination information could still be used to enter F&B premises.

KUDAT, Aug 12 — A total of 300 sites will be equipped with Very Small Aperture Terminal (VSAT) facilities next year to improve internet connectivity in Sabah and complement the National Digital Network (JENDELA) programme, said Chief Minister Datuk Hajiji Noor.

He said the initiative would be implemented by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and to date, MCMC had earmarked 138 sites for the VSAT installations and was working closely with the Education Ministry to install the facilities in 59 schools without internet connection.

Hajiji said for this year, about 50 sites had been identified for the installation of the VSAT ConnectMeNow facilities to ensure the people, particularly those in rural areas, will get an internet connection.

“Communication infrastructure especially fibre networks are needed to support the digital economy agenda and enable all citizens to take advantage of opportunities the latest technologies and innovations have to offer,” he told reporters after launching the VSAT ConnectMeNow programme here today.

Hajiji said prior to this, five VSAT facilities had been installed for trial purposes in Ranau, Tambunan, Pitas, Papar, and the Papar Technology and Research Training Institute.

Commenting further, Hajiji said the VSAT ConnectMeNow programme would benefit seven villages, namely Kampung Andap, Kampung Popot, Kampung Bak Bak, Kampung Bingolon Laut, Kampung Gumandong, Kampung Rampai and the Loro Forest Reserve.

Sabah had been allocated RM3.5 billion to implement JENDELA programme, which is expected to boost the state’s 4G internet penetration to 90 per cent by the year 2023.

Hajiji said up to May this year, a total of 51 telecommunication towers had already been built while another 483 are in the midst of construction.

At the same time, some 1,729 towers have been upgraded from 3G to 4G while the remaining 1,648 are still undergoing upgrading works.
