TMJ urges the people to register for COVID-19 vaccine

— Tunku Mahkota Johor Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim today advised the people in Johor to register for the COVID-19 vaccine so that herd immunity can be achieved in the nearest future.

In a posting on his HRH Crown Prince of Johor Facebook account, Tunku Ismail said vaccination has been proven to reduce COVID-19 transmissions effectively.

“It is very important for us to achieve herd immunity in order to contain this pandemic. If herd immunity is achieved in the near future, then our lives can return to normal and Johor’s economic recovery can begin,” Tunku Ismail said.

Taking note of the people’s grouses over access to vaccines, the Crown Prince expressed confidence in the efforts taken under the National COVID-19 Immunisation Program (PICK) in ensuring adequate vaccine supply for the people of Johor.

Tunku Ismail also congratulated Johor-based non-governmental organisation, Southern Volunteers, for their efforts in assisting frontline workers at vaccination centres (PPV) throughout the state.

“This is the spirit of volunteerism that should be emulated by all levels of society, especially the youths. Continue this noble service and may you all be healthy and safe while performing your duties,” Tunku Ismail said.

Southern Volunteers was established last year to lead volunteer activities, especially those involving Johor youths.

Earlier, Tunku Ismail had visited the AstraZeneca PPV at the Persada Johor International Convention Centre here to check on operations. The PPV will operate from June 7 to July 27.

Yesterday, Sultan of Johor Sultan Ibrahim Almarhum Sultan Iskandar had expressed disappointment with the state’s slow Covid-19 vaccination rate as only 10 percent of its 3.78 million population have been vaccinated under PICK.

According to an infographic posted on the Johor Health Department’s Facebook page, a total of 530,193 vaccine doses have been administered in the state, as of June 20, involving 370,186 first doses and 160,007 second shots.

Shah Alam Hospital is now fully Non COVID-19 Hospital – Selangor Health Director

Shah Alam Hospital has changed its status from hybrid COVID-19 into the first fully non COVID-19 hospital in Selangor, effective today.

Selangor Health director Datuk Dr Sha’ari Ngadiman said following the change in status, Shah Alam Hospital will now only receive non-COVID-19 cases while pandemic cases would only be attended at the emergency department level.

“…(Acceptance of) COVID-19 cases is only at the emergency department and we will refer COVID-19 cases to Ampang Hospital, Sungai Buloh Hospital and the Low Risk COVID-19 Quarantine and Treatment Centre (PKRC) at the Malaysia Agro Exposition Park Serdang (MAEPS).

“When Shah Alam Hospital was made fully non COVID-19 hospital, it can carry out surgery and operations like a normal hospital,” he told Bernama after visiting a Selangor vaccine outreach dispensing centre here today.

He said the decision was taken following a change in status for Ampang Hospital which is now made a fully COVID-19 treatment hospital effective yesterday.

Dr Sha’ari said his department is targeting two more COVID-19 hybrid hospitals namely Kajang Hospital and Banting Hospital into fully non COVID-19 hospitals after this.

Meanwhile, Dr Sha’ari said three primary treatment areas in Ampang Hospital which is blood related diseases, obstetrics and paediatrics would remain despite the change in status of the hospital.

“Ampang Hospital is a referral centre for diseases related to blood. When we made it a fully COVID-19 hospital, we are still retaining it as a blood referral centre as well as maintaining obstetric and paediatric operations.

“The three disciplines will not be disturbed after becoming fully COVID-19,” he said.

Dr Sha’ari said about 700 beds are provided at Ampang Hospital to accommodate category three and four COVID-19 patients.

“Currently we are treating 1,200 to 1,500 category three patients at MAEPS. Yesterday from about 100 category four patients, 94 were referred to the fully COVID-19 hospital.

Also present at the event was Deputy Health Minister Datuk Dr Noor Azmi Ghazali.

DoE probes cause of dead fish in Sungai Damansara

— The Department of Environment (DoE) is investigating the cause of dead fish in Sungai Damansara as reported in social media yesterday.

Selangor DoE director Nor Aziah Jaafar said the dead fish, mainly suckermouth catfish (Hypostomus plecostomus) and Mozambique tilapia (Oreochromis mossambicus), were found over a five-kilometre stretch of the river.

She also said that an in situ test at Sungai Kayu Ara near a log boom revealed foam in the river river and the dissolved oxygen concentration was 4.5 milligrams per litre. Healthy water usually has dissolved oxygen concentrations above 6.5 to 8 mg per litre.

Nor Aziah said the DoE had scoured the upstream and downstream stretches of the river for potential sources of pollution within a 10 km radius from the location where the dead fish were found.

This involved inspections at several food and beverage-based factories, commercial centres, storm water discharges from residential areas and two public sewage treatment plants, she added.

Nor Aziah advised people who had information on the incident to come forward and assist the DoE in the investigation, saying the DoE always took firm action against environmental criminals.

Complaints of pollution can be reported via the DoE toll-free line at 1-800-88-2727 or email to aduan_k@doe.gov.my or the DoE e-complaint portal at https://eaduan.doe.gov.my.

‘Adik Kiss’ and ‘Long’ enjoy their daily rides on motorcycle

— The close connection he has with his pets is very special for Muhammad Amir Mustapa, 29, whose jungle fowl and cat are inseparable and easy to carry anywhere on a motorcycle.

Muhammad Amir said it has become his daily routine to bring ‘Long’ which is the affectionate nickname for his jungle fowl and ‘Adik Kiss’ for his cat to go for a ride almost every day, even to Dungun, Terengganu.

He said this had also attracted the attention of road users who were excited to see them and would take pictures while some had expressed concern that his pets might fall off the bike.

“Initially, I only took Adik Kiss for the rides but eventually, when I took Long along I was pleasantly surprised to find them both so calm and didn’t move much on the motorcycle.

“Before the country was hit by the COVID-19 pandemic, I had taken both of them to Dungun and during the trip, they just enjoyed the scenery and stayed put,” he said when met by reporters at his house in Kampung Cherodok, here, today.

“I have never trained both of them to be so, it was all a spontaneous action. Probably due to my close connection with Adik Kiss and Long, they don’t misbehave and seem to enjoy the ride,” said the eighth child of 11 siblings.

“Usually, I will put both of them on the back seat and sometimes on the handlebars but their favourite spot is my shoulder. I will ride at a safe speed so as not to scare them,” he said.

Muhammad Amir and his trusted pets riding the bike has gone viral on the social media site Facebook and got almost 40,000 views, besides positive responses from netizens who expressed their wonder over the extraordinary situation.

Allowance will boost volunteers’ spirit to better serve PwD – Ras Adiba

The provision of RM100 daily allowance to volunteers serving persons with disabilities (PwD) will certainly boost their spirit to continue to provide the best service to the special group.

OKU Sentral president Senator Datuk Ras Adiba Radzi said currently, there are about 100 volunteers under the non-governmental organisation who provide free services to help ensure the smooth running of the COVID-19 vaccination process at vaccination centre (PPV) specifically for PwD.

“OKU Sentral has helped a lot of PwD friends out there, especially at the PPV and they have been doing it voluntarily.

“Therefore, the assistance (allowance) given will definitely facilitate our work…encourage us to help more disabled people out there,” she told Bernama after accompanying Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin visiting the OKU Sentral drive-through vaccination centre at Menara Sime Darby Plantation here today.

Also present was Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Rina Harun.

Earlier, the Prime Minister in his press conference announced that the allowance increase for healthcare volunteers involved in the COVID-19 vaccination process and management would also be given to volunteers serving PwD.

Ras Adiba who is also the Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) chairman said OKU Sentral could not register its volunteers under the Malaysia Vaccine Support Volunteers (MyVac) initiative because the registration period had expired.

However, she said out of a sense of responsibility, OKU Sentral volunteers continue to serve the PwD community as they realised that the group needed assistance to get the COVID-19 vaccine.

“Even though the registration has been closed, we still carry out our duties to help our PwD friends because we know that many of them need support, especially those with physical disabilities,” she said.

FT Ministry wants to vaccinate 6,000 food delivery riders, 7,000 traders from July

— The Federal Territories Ministry is targeting to vaccinate over 6,000 food delivery riders and 7,000 traders here and in Putrajaya and Labuan next month.

Its minister, Tan Sri Annuar Musa said it was only appropriate that these groups be given priority as they were exposed to risks other than convincing the public who had to deal with them daily.

“Although the food delivery riders generally comprise the young in their 20’s and not a vulnerable group, their work is an essential service too.

“They have to work regardless of the situation including entering the Enhanced Movement Control Order (EMCO) areas. The public feels unsafe until they know these people (food riders) have been vaccinated.

“They also have to continue working for a living. If they are not vaccinated they will be demoralised and exposed to the danger, so it is fair to give them priority,” he told a special media conference recently.

He said the ministry would also discuss with the companies providing the delivery service soon to obtain details on the workers.

Annuar said the ministry also gave priority to groups regarded to be at high risk in high-density areas including workers at the Kuala Lumpur Wholesale Market (PBKL), residents of the People’s Housing Projects (PPR), construction workers and the homeless.

“We vaccinate workers at PBKL and PPR residents through the pioneer mobile vaccination truck programme and to date, over 200 homeless people too have been vaccinated,” he added.

Annuar said 50,000 people in Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya were expected to be vaccinated per day by next month at 124 vaccine administering centres (PPV) including mobile vaccination trucks serving the PPR and Public Housing areas, traditional villages and centres for the homeless in the federal capital.

He said the vaccination of residents in Kuala Lumpur had now risen from 7,000 doses to 35,789, Putrajaya (1,000 to 1,800) and Labuan (700 to 3,000) per day.
