KUCHING: Construction of the 7km Rantau Panjang-Rassau road in Sibu will commence early next year.
Assistant Minister of Coastal Road Datuk Julaihi Narawi said the road project was approved by Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg during his walkabout in the area in April this year.
The project, which is still at the tender stage and will close on Dec 5, is expected to start early next year.
Once completed, the road will benefit many people in the area who are mostly Ibans and Melanaus who now use boats to travel to Sibu and other towns nearest to them, which normally takes about one hour 20 minutes, Julaihi said during a site visit recently.
Julaihi, who is Sebuyau assemblyman, said the road project would also benefit nine longhouses, two schools (SK Sg Passai, SMK Btg Igan), and two villages.
Accompanying Julaihi during the visit were head of project from the Ministry of Infrastructure Development and Transportation Ismail Mosli, Sibu Public Works Department (JKR) divisional engineer Bryan Wong, and a political secretary to chief minister Romeo Christopher.
