Water quality in Tasik Chini clean and safe – Pahang DOE

— The water quality in Tasik Chini is clean and safe for all life, said Pahang Department of Environment (DOE).

In a statement here today, the department said there are 15 water quality monitoring stations set in locations around Tasik Chini, with a monitoring frequency of once a month at each station.

“The main parameters measured are biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), suspended solids (SS), ammonia nitrogen (AN) and iron (FE). Generally, the data for 2020 until March 2021 shows the water quality of Tasik Chini is in the clean category,” it said.

The department said it had been monitoring the second largest freshwater lake in the country ever since it was accorded the biosphere reserve status by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) in May 2009.

On March 13, 2019, the state government had agreed to gazette an area of 4,498 hectares in the lake as a Permanent Forest Reserve.

The issue related to Tasik Chini went viral on social media recently following the circulation of the latest photographs allegedly showing the lake was threatened due to mining activities.

It drew reactions from various parties, including Pekan Member of Parliament Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak who claimed the photograph was taken two years ago.
