Sunway Group introduces EV charging bays in collaboration with ParkEasy

KUALA LUMPUR, Sunway Group plans to provide more electric vehicle (EV) charging bays in the group’s facilities, including medical centres and shopping malls, in collaboration with smart parking reservation service provider ParkEasy.

Describing low carbon-type facilities as the way to go in the future, group founder and chairman Tan Sri Jeffrey Cheah Fook Ling said he is hopeful that the move could help reduce carbon emissions.

He was speaking to reporters on the sidelines at the launching of the new Reserve + Shell Recharge Bays at Sunway Pyramid here, today.

Cheah said with the launch today, there will be 10 charging bays in Sunway Group’s facilities in the Klang Valley five in the Sunway Pyramid shopping mall (Petaling Jaya), three in The Pinnacle Sunway corporate tower (Petaling Jaya), and two in the Sunway Velocity mall (Cheras).

The next charging bays will be in our medical centres to serve more customers with hybrid or electric cars. Hopefully, we could expand the charging bays to the medical centres this year, he said.

The ParkEasy platform is a mobile application that allows EV or plug-in hybrid electric vehicle users to reserve a spot at Reserve + Shell Recharge Bays for more than 60 minutes, and assure drivers of parking and charging availability.

The new recharge bays are jointly introduced by Sunway Group, BMW Group Malaysia, Shell Malaysia Ltd and ParkEasy.

Moving forward, Cheah said the group plans to continue collaborating with ParkEasy to provide charging bays solution in Sunway Carnival Mall in mainland Penang, Banjaran Hotsprings Retreat in Ipoh and Sunway Big Box Village shopping mall in Johor Bahru.

Now there are two charging bays in Banjaran Hotsprings Retreat in Ipoh, and I’m sure there will be more demand for it, he added.

Meanwhile, Shell Malaysia chairman Datuk Iain Lo said to-date, there are 12 electric car charging bays provided by the company in offices and shopping malls in the country.

He said the company plans to provide fast charging bays at Shell petrol stations if the number of EVs in the country grows to a sufficient level in the future.
