RM1.5 Bln Devt Projects For NRDA Over Next Two Years

LIMBANG: Development projects to provide basic facilities and infrastructure, including road construction, water supply and Lawas Airport, are among those identified for the Northern Region Development Agency (NRDA) covering Limbang and Lawas districts.

Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan said RM1.5 billion had been allocated by the Sarawak government to implement these projects over the next two years.

The development projects implemented under the Regional Corridor of Development Authority (Recoda) not only focus on infrastructure, but also the upgrading of dilapidated schools in northern Sarawak, he said during a Chinese New Year visit to the homes of Temenggong Ang Kheng Su and Limbang Archers Association chairman David Chua Kien Teen yesterday.

Although the federal government does not proceed with the construction of the Lawas Airport, some NRDA’s allocations will be spent on the construction of the airport at a cost of RM150 million, for the first phase.

The same goes with the projects to upgrade and build new schools in Limbang and Lawas, although they are federal government’s responsibility, added Awang Tengah, who is also Urban Development and Natural Resources Minister.

He also said the government is aware that there are still many dilapidated schools that need urgent upgrading works.

He said among other projects identified under NRDA would be those for tourism, entrepreneurship, small and medium industries (SMIs), youth training and cultural activities.

Awang Tengah said NRDA has a huge economic potential as a result of the overwhelming impact of the Brunei-Indonesia- Malaysia-Philippines East Asean Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA).

The NRDA can capitalise on its strategic location with neighbouring Brunei, Labuan, Sabah and Indonesia, he said, adding that the establishment of NRDA would accelerate the development of infrastructure and facilities in the region, besides attracting investments that would enhance the socio-economic status of the locals.

Also present were Awang Tengah’s wife Datuk Dayang Morliah Awang Daud, Assistant Minister of Agriculture Dr Abdul Rahman Ismail, Limbang MP Hasbi Habibollah, Batu Danau assemblyman Paulus Palu Gumbang, Limbang Division Resident Ahmad Denney Ahmad Fauzi, Limbang District Officer Superi Awang Said, Limbang District Walikota Sufian Mohat and Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) Bukit Sari branch deputy chairman Awangku Jinal Abidin Pengiran Jawa.
