KAPIT: River transporters here are reminded to strictly adhere to river safety compliances to prevent unwanted incidents involving passengers.
Bukit Goram assemblyman Jefferson Jamit, who gave the advice, said transporters must ensure their boats are in excellent condition and equipped with the necessary safety gear.
Be responsible yourself and your passengers by adhering strictly to safety compliances set by the Marine Department and Sarawak Rivers Board.
Ensure your boats are in tip-top condition and equipped with all the essential rescue and safety tools.
Make sure there are enough life jackets for passengers and above all, please do not overload your boats, he said when handing out safety jackets as part of a river safety campaign held at the longboat jetty in Kapit New Bazaar on Wednesday.
He said with the expected surge in passenger volume in the lead up to Gawai Dayak, the Marine Department and Sarawak Rivers Board (SRB) must organise more safety-related programmes to highlight river transport safety among local folk.
Marine Department Sarawak principal assistant director Julyus Melvin Mobilik, SRB enforcement officer Geoffery Berdeby, and Kapit Resident Joseph Belayong were among those present at the event.
