Psychological Wellbeing Key To Success Of Civil Servants

KUCHING: Psychological wellbeing is key to the success of the state civil service in serving the people of Sarawak.

According to Deputy State Secretary Datu Dr Sabariah Putit, it is important that state civil servants are happy with their jobs so that they could serve the people better.

Happy civil servants are important and are worth-noting because happy workers tend to be more productive and high-performing.

To further strengthen the civil service, a Wellness Policy will be issued next year. It is one of the efforts of the Sarawak government to ensure its civil servants achieve prosperity by balancing the needs of life and employment, she said at the closing ceremony of the fourth edition of Psychological and Counselling Day here yesterday.

She said based on Phase I of the Civil Service Department’s study on public servants in August this year, it was found that the composite value of psychological well-being of Malaysian civil servants was Rated at 6.9 from the maximum 10 a moderate level.

Sabariah said the human resource management in the state civil service must be strengthened with the right and effective approach to achieve a better index.

In 2017, the Sarawak government implemented the Employee Needs Assessment Inventory (ENAI) to 54-41 grade graduates totalling 1,460. The findings show that the category recorded an index of 1.56, which is good, she said.

She also revealed there is a plan known as PANS Psychology and Counseling Services Strategic Planning 2018-2020 (Pelan Perancangan Strategik Perkhidmatan Psikologi dan Kaunseling Perkhidmatan Awam Negeri Sarawak (PANS) 2018-2020) introduced to further strengthen the public service psychology and counseling services of the state civil servants.

The plan would be the main reference for implementation focus, approach and application of state psychology and counseling services as well as a major achievement index to the State Human Resources Unit (SHRU), especially the Employment Support Division.

She also said that through the plan, five key areas of excellence were identified: Excellent Service, Excellent Development, Workplace Psychology Wellness, Employee Excellence and Institution.

Director of the state Human Resources Unit Datu William Patrick Nyigor was also present at the event.

About 700 participants from state and federal government departments and agencies participated in the programme.
