MAKKAH, July 29 (NNN-Bernama) — Lack of physical exercise at home, an unbalanced diet and not drinking enough water are among the main causes of haj pilgrims tiring quickly and falling sick while in the holy land.
Pilgrims Fund Board (TH) Haj Entourage deputy chief (Medical) Dr Mohd Shaffari Marzuki said 1,600 pilgrims, aged 60 years and above, had sought treatments, during the 1439H pilgrimage season, to date.
“Most of our pilgrims are in high spirits but I think their physical capabilities need to be enhanced before they depart for the haj.
“Lack of physical exercise and incorrect dieting practices results in many pilgrims tiring quickly and suffering from joint and knee pains when performing the haj,” he told a media conference here yesterday.
TH has emphasised the importance of physical, mental and social health during the courses organised in the country, but most pilgrims, especially those aged 60 years and above, were still wanting in terms of physical fitness.
“If we look at past statistics, the outpatients treatments were for a lot of cough and cold, apart from joint problems and knee pains, as they do a lot of walking, and skin diseases due to the hot weather.
“For those who were admitted, the treatments we frequently give were for pneumonia-related problems and heart disease, a major problem that contributes to the death of pilgrims when in the holy land,” he said.–NNN-BERNAMA
