Need for acacia plantation tie-up with VietnamDCM

KUCHING: Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan said there is a need to establish collaboration with Vietnam on acacia plantation to help spur the development and implementation of forest plantation in Sarawak.

This is to support the Sarawak government’s target of establishing one million hectares of forest plantation by 2025, added Awang Tengah, who is also Second Minister for Urban Development and Natural Resources, Minister for Industrial and Entrepreneur Development and chairman of Sarawak Timber Industry Development Corporation (STIDC) Board of Management.

An MoU has been signed between Sarawak Forestry Corporation Sdn Bhd and Vietnam Academy of Forest Science (VAFS) regarding R&D on acacia plantation towards this cause, he said yesterday.

Awang Tengah is currently leading a 36-member delegation to Hanoi in Vietnam for a four-day mission starting Aug 1.

The visit is aimed at sharing information and exploring the possibility of collaboration with Vietnam in areas of common interest as well as to lure investors, he pointed out.

On the first day of the visit, Awang Tengah and the delegation visited the Vietnam Academy of Forest Science, a research institution in Vietnam that conducts scientific research and develops technology in support of sustainable forest management and forest related industries.

The delegation was briefed on the R&D works on acacia breeding and improvement and civil culture methodology for acacia plantation.
