MALAYSIA: GOVT CONFIDENT SAUDI ARABIA UNDERSTANDS MALAYSIA’S STAND TO BRING HOME TROOPS

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia Aug 1 (NNN-BERNAMA) Defence Minister Mohamad Sabu said the government is confident that Saudi Arabia understands Malaysia’s stand to bring home Malaysian troops stationed in the kingdom.

He said Malaysia would continue cooperation with the Saudi government in various other fields.

I myself have met the Saudi Arabian ambassador to Malaysia and I told him that we want to heighten cooperation in education, technology and other matters. I am confident they understand Malaysia’s foreign policy, he said when winding up debate on the motion of thanks for the royal address in the Dewan Rakyat (Lower House) yesterday.

Commenting further, Mohamad, who is more popularly known as Mat Sabu , said that Malaysia remained neutral in the Saudi-led conflict against its Iran-backed neighbour Yemen.

He said that although Malaysian troops in the kingdom were not involved in combat activities, they provided logistical support.

The troops have been based in Saudi Arabia since 2015 with the primary task to bring home Malaysians trapped in conflict-torn Yemen.
