BAGAN DATUK, Malaysia Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi described the 11-day campaign period for the 14th General Election (GE14) nationwide which ended at midnight as better than the previous general elections.
The Deputy Prime Minister said even though the party supporters were campaigning in a passionate and enthusiastic way, they celebrated the process of democracy in peace and harmony.
“So far, very good and only a few police reports have been lodged nationwide. The general election campaigns this time were better than before.
“Thanks to the opposition and the police who maintained the public order during the pre-campaign, campaign and (voting process) today. I hope there will be no incidents today,” he told reporters after casting his vote at Madrasah Manbail Ulum Sungai Nipah Darat, Rungkup here this morning.
He was accompanied by his wife Hamidah Khamis and his eldest daughter, Nurulhidayah.
Ahmad Zahid, 65, the incumbent for the Bagan Datuk parliamentary seat for five terms since 1995, is facing Pakhrurrazi Arshad of PKR and Ata Abdul Muneim Hasan Adli of PAS.
In GE13, Ahmad Zahid defeated Madhi Hasan of PKR with a majority of 2,108 votes.
He said all quarters should put their trust in the Election Commission (EC).
He also warned all quarters not to make wild allegations against the police, armed forces and EC.
Meanwhile, Ahmad Zahid, who is also Barisan Nasional deputy chairman, said the results were expected to be announced by the EC in stages from as early as 9 pm.
A total of 38 polling stations with 92 polling streams are made available in Bagan to facilitate the polling process in conjunction with GE14 involving 47,309 voters.
